Set the in camera noise reduction to -4, this option like the dynamic range one affects RAW files. This way you will retain more detail in your RAW files. Fujifilm in-body noise reduction is not very good, -4 is actually 0 in Fuji world. I hope this helps!

I agree with Andrei here. Moreover, reducing noise to -4 improves not only luma noise but also the nuances en colour by reducing the colour noise reduction. Foliage and skin will thank you.

When I first tried out the Fuji X-H2, I found the sharpness was a real issue, compared to the Sony cameras I use. I was talking with one of the Fujifilm tech guys in the UK, and here was his suggestion: It’s a known thing with LR and how it debayers and demosaics Fujifilm raw files. Because LR applies default values to every sensor type for every camera manufacturer. Our sensors aren’t Bayer type sensors so this artefacting becomes more prevalent. C1 will give a much more pleasing look because they don’t apply default sharpening to the RAF files, C1 apply sharpening based on camera sensors. So an X-T4 will be ever so slightly different to an. -T5 and so on. If you’re using LR however, I’ve found that they really need a bit more “special treatment” or “love” in the sharpening department. Maximise the sharpening slider and bring down the detail slider, this is where a lot of people go wrong. I generally use the following as a base, and tweak the sharpening amount and mask the sharpening in where it’s needed. Sharpening: 100 - 115 Detail: 0 Radius: 0.8 - 1.0 Masking: 65 - 90 I hope that helps? Any more questions please don’t hesitate to give me a message

There's definitely a quality bump by using C1, but, like you, I also prefer Lightroom for my workflow. The new DXO Pure RAW demosiacing is really great for Fuji files but there is certainly a noticeable detail difference between my Canon R6 and every Fuji sensor I have used (every one except the new 40mp one). Fuji needs to drop the X-trans colour array. They are simply using it for marketing. They have shown with the GFX sensors that they can retain excellent colours and film sims using a Bayer colour array. It would seem that this is where the lack of detail comes from.

Was a bit surprised by the sharpness comment. While my XT5 is not here yet, my XT4 (26mp) always blew me away, especially compared to my full frame nikon D850. It had no problem giving my full frame a big run for its money in that department! To be honest, I'm so blown away by the image quality of fujifilm that my nikon d850 and d810 do far more dust collecting now as I'm always grabbing for my fuji XT series nowadays. I think the differences (while there) between full frame and apsc are far smaller than any of us full frame camera junkies want to admit (myself included). Fujifilm was never meant to be anything more than my bang around family photo camera but it now has me slowly retiring my full frames and is becoming my do all camera.

You just compared a DSLR 810/850 to a mirrioless x-t5...Try comparing a FF Nikon Z8 or 9 to a x-t5 and then you will realize the little crop gets its azzzz spanked.

I tried the XT5 and loved it. There's a video from Pete Coco where he does over the best settings for eye AF that is helpful. I also had the X100V but found the setup to be slightly different for the XT5 as far as AF. Nice video.

Thanks for sharing, I think the fact the Fuji XT5 images look good via the LCD is because that is giving you the JPG preview which are processed in camera via fuji processing not the horrible Adobe raw which we all know mushes and destroys the Fuji Raw files.

Two ways I have gotten sharp images from my XH2 (same sensor): Turn high ISO NR down to -4. I know, I know. But it will make a slight difference in sharpness in RAW files. I also run images through DxO Pure RAW 3. DxO processes Fuji RAW files way better than Adobe. I use it as a plugin with LrC. I have been way more happy with the 40mp files.

In Lightroom, right click the photo -> enhance -> turn off super resolution. With the enhanced dng bump up the sharpening. That's an optimum raw conversion and how the files should look.

I'm a Sony shooter but have recently been trying Fuji.I'm not sure whether it's my wishful thinking or what but the Fuji images you showed seemed to have a warmer more vibrant look to them for me. You’re not wrong! I do find Fuji files more warm maybe even magenta, whereas when my second shooters use Sony or Canon, they come out with a green hue. Full frame has a nice look for sure, but I love Fuji colours and the cameras are more inspiring to shoot with than a clinical feeling I get with Sony.

C1's treatment of Fuji files is nice because it has better default settings. It recognizes the film sim preset you used and applies it, it can read the star rating (if you did them in-camera), and noise+sharpness usually looks good by default. I do think it has a different "look", and I like the JPEG compression a lot - full resolution files look great and have reasonable size. But IMO LR can yield even better results in many cases and is fine for Fuji users after some learning. The issue is that LR's defaults aren't appropriate, it does not load a Fuji film sim by default, sharpening is wrong and 0 noise reduction is applied. One also needs to select a sharpening method on export - that made a big difference in the final look. I tend to set sharpening to 30-100 range, radius is set between 1-3, detail is 0-5 (not 25), and masking is often applied when faces are involved. Luminance reduction set somewhere from 15-35 or so. The overall quality / ISO of the RAW dictates how I will adjust, there is no "preset" I've found yet that always pleases me. I also have played with "denoise" feature, and it can work magic in situations where I shot way higher ISO by accident. Or, it can be nice because, once converted to a DNG, you can sharpen the crap out of the resulting file as if using any bayer sensor camera. Aside from that, I would guess that the XT5 has "half as much detail" as your Sony camera because that is basically the full frame difference in this case. The Sony has a solid 1-2 stops better low light performance across the ISO range, which probably helps when the lights are getting dimmer. When brighter, it has better performance. I find I get acceptable results in bad lighting with my XT3, but frankly it otherwise needs lots of ambient light to look its best. Indoors I typically have to incorporate flash if I really want the best results. Even wide open f/1.4 or f/1.2 with ISO set between 1600-6400 for a proper exposure, things can get mushy unless I can also drop the shutter way down. XT5 is slightly worse in terms of noise performance so I figure this is even more important. All this said the Fuji has been worth the extra efforts - the pictures I've been able to get are often gorgeous.

I'm not a wedding photographer, but switched from Sony to GFX50S2 for landscape and X-T5 for personal, and I get your feelings about LR workflow. But I found my images lacking certain desirable detail, and when I switched to Cap1 (3rd time was the charm, once I figured out workflow!), I found the detail that LR was missing that I was blaming on other things. It just handles the files in such a cleaner way. But workflow rules... Cheers!

I have shot Fuji professionally for years and used both Lightroom CC and Capture One for postprocessing. No matter what people say on KZbin, there is no way you get good quality in LR. It is just not there. I shoot events, landscape and portraits and if I need the best detail, I will use Capture One. Even the SOOC jpgs are not as good as Capture One exports. I think the problem lies with the X-Trans sensor. I think Fuji knows this and that is why they don't use X-Trans in their GFX series.

I am new to the Fuji world, I really wanted to use the Fuji for dialed in SOOC Jpegs and not edit with X100v. I then added a X-H1 with 3 primes. I ended up selling the X100v to get the X-H2 (on the fence of selling X-H1). My question to you, I use CapOne-E for mild edits now when needed. I like that I can retain the recipe that I shot in CO-E where as I lose it in LR. If I decide to get CO Pro, when you need to export to PS for a touch up, will it keep the recipe from in-camera?

Came here to say this. Lightroom is still fine, but best results are with capture one. Also it can help to dick around with sharpening and noise settings in camere. 0 is not always 0. On my xt3 it helps to set noise to -4 some bodies also need something similar for sharpening

@@patlezinc Actually, when you look at some SOOC jpgs from Fuji, they are worse than C1 results. So if a sensor produces RAWs that are that hard to handle (even for Fuji themselves) maybe it should be replaced with a Bayer sensor. Interestingly, Fuji doesn‘t use X-Trans sensors with their GFX line.

This video does such a great job of explaining the differences between Sony and Fuji. It’s hard to argue that Sonys aren’t the best cameras on the market, especially on paper. But they are also incredibly boring to shoot with in comparison to the fujis. My Xt2 files generally look better than my xt3 ones in Lightroom. I thought they had fixed it on the newer cameras but I guess not. I’m just happy bashing out jpegs now so absolutely love the xt5 for that. Such a great user experience. Especially cause I have small fat hands haha. Hope you find a good solution to the sharpening issue

In processing go to details and move the details slider to 0 or 1, but no higher than 3. This greatly reduces the grainy or wormy affect. Interesting video thanks for the content 😄

Then finally add grain back in at about A - 15. S - 5. R - 50. ... It's not the most intuitive of processes but certainly gets the sharpest results with LR that i've found.

Hey Chris, I've recently been trying the GFX50SII and it's really creating some beautiful images at Weddings (paired with the GF80 1.7). Apparently the Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 Nikon Mount adapted pairs very well with beautiful rendering. I use it for the portrait part of the day (or details) only using the Sony for the walking shots (and the rest of the day). I was wondering whether it was a bit too luxury of a purchase at first but now I'm very happy with it and I do feel it's adding something for me... I've been shooting my Sonys for a long time (A9 & R3) so getting the Fuji has been fun - love the grip, love the shutter sound and the colours are so easy to edit. It won't replace my Sonys for documenting the day though...need to upgrade those 3rd gen bodies soon tho!

As a pro Fujifilm user, you must only use Capture One to process X-Trans sensors. For the Beyer sensor Lightroom is great. It is a 180% improvement. I almost sold all of my Fujifilm systems when I had the XT3's until I discovered Capture One. Sharpening at 180% at 0.8 pixels threshold "0"

I went from Canon R5 to Fuji XT5 for size, weight, price. Yes, Canon details are better when you look at 100%. But it is really the illness of digital photography : you can zoom in at 100%. What is the point ? Who will do that when looking at the final picture?? You will enjoy the composition, the light, the models. And if it is printed, you can’t zoom 100%. I have the 56 mm f1.2 and it is very sharp wide open. Less than my ex 85 RF 1.2, but at normal viewing size you just can’t see it. Pixel peeping illness is selling a lot of expensive gears (I bought some). AF of the XT5 is pretty good even if the R5 one is better. Color science of Fuji is better and film simulations are awesome. You loose about 1 stop of DOF but a 56mm 1.2 can do a fantastic job too and the bokeh is very very nice. If you master your job, the size, cost and weight of the XT5 56mm is divided by 3 compared with a R5 with 85 RF1.2 and the quality is NOT divided by 3. Not at all. And is all about your needs and your money, but the Fuji system is not ridiculous

Yes, the easiest way to get the files in the Fujifilm is to go into the settings and there's two settings with skin toning which you can adjust as well. And also you can decrease the sharpening as well or increase the sharpening when you do that however each image, there's about a two second delay, one second delay while it adds the sharpening before it saves so that can be a bit painful but it does get you the Wright files I find it depends on what you shoot and what lens if you use the 56 1.2 that's a little bit more character driven lens and that is the old lens, the new lenses are actually really sharp and it depends on what like you like to go for but definitely the skin tones are really not soft I would say but they're more character driven into the Fujifilm XT5

Hey Chris, I returned my GFX100S to Fuji not long after I bought it because I was so underwhelmed with the RAW files. Not a patch on the A7RIV and V. The GFX was in spec so I started shooting RAW + JPEG to see if the JPEG's were sharp. No tweaking in camera btw. The difference was night and day ... the JPEG's confirmed that I had nailed focus and that DOF was not the issue. I always shoot JPEG as well now so I can see what I've got to work with.

Hi guys, I use xt2 and xt4 for wedding, and honestly I dont see any lack of sharpness. You don't really want vwry sharp skin and faces anyway . I so all my processing on LR, have compared with other processors and don't see a visible difference... I much prefer my edited raw files when comparing to sooc jpgs. When shooting video I find the xt4 (the xt2 as well, but I dont use it much for video) really sharp and clean. I used Canon FF before, and sometimes I miss the shallow DOF, but that's about it. You can't relly on shallow DOF to stand out from the crowd in 2023...

Yes! Highly recommended! You can use it directly in LR and work further with the resulting DNG. However, I couldn't use it with the downloaded X-T5 files, although camera and lens are both supported. Strange...

I’m a wedding photographer that shot Fujifilm cameras for 4 years before moving to Sony in 2020. I found the issue with Fujifilm Raw files from the x trans sensor was how Lightroom handled the demosaicing. Using Iridient X-Transformer as a pretreatment worked really well. It converts the .raf files to .dng. But extra work I didn’t need with 40 odd weddings per year.

I own a Fujifilm XT5 I don't shoot weddings much any more I used to, but I've got a wedding coming up actually in February and I haven't shot a wedding with an XT5 are used to shoot with my Nikon D850 a lot. I'm also interested in a Fujifilm GFX camera for landscape photography because I do a lot of that as well. I wonder how the GFX and XT5 would go as a combination cameras. They are very different, but I like the idea of two Fujifilm cameras. The thing I like about Fuji is the colours it is so beautiful the colours and I'm not just talking about the film simulations either even Justin Raw, the colours are beautiful.

Great video Chris! I switched from Sony to Fuji and discovered Capture one recently. Not sure if anyones mentioned this, but it's a night and day difference when it comes to sharpening. I suggest you give the trail a go and see what you think. It's come a long way over the last couple years and is a really good companion to the X System. Im in the process of making a switch to it!

I've been with fuji since the xt2 to xt4 but switched last year to A7IV. I dont like the Fuji files in lightroom and I dont want to swich to capture one. I had the rx100VII for few yers also and it convinced me to move to Sony. Not gonna lie, the added shallow depth of field when shoting 35GM or any fast lens on a full frame is Boss. ❤ That being said Fuji is very Fun to use and the new jpeg profiles are awesome. Definitely good choice for someone that doesn't want to edit much outside of cropping. I recommend them to family.

LR doesn't like X Trans .RAF files, it's that simple. Once you have your culled files, batch Denoise them, even at the lowest value and edit off these. You will see a big difference, the muddiness gone etc. Enhanced DNG is what LR prefers to work with, not the .RAF files. It's an additional step but other than this you'll have to make do or use another editor.

I’ve got a Sony a7iv kit and Fuji X-h2 kit. The Sony files are always sharper but as you say, sometimes too sharp! The Fuji files get closer if you run them through dxo deep prime before importing into Lightroom. I am using all the new Fuji primes that work best with the 40mp sensor too. The new Fuji 56mm f1.2 WR gets the closest to the Sony 35mm f1.4 GM. My experience with AF is the same as yours. Subject detection on Fuji still feels buggy but if you just use the joystick you can get around it.

The GF 80mm is pretty slow for AF on its own, so I wouldn’t put that entirely down to the 50Sii body. That said I find it okay on the 100S, the 100 f/2 is reportedly better (haven’t used this one myself though) For sharpening x trans stuff I use smart sharpen in Ps and just round trip it back to Lr. This is for landscapes though so 🤷‍♂️

Agree 1000%! I shot Fuji for 4 years and finally got fed up with the build quality, lack of detail, and low light performance. I switched to Sony which was a night and day difference. Sadly, I also got a bit bored with Sony... and now I'm fully Leica which is (in my opinion) the perfect combination of the fun and character of Fuji with the detail and quality of sony. Great video!

I compared a a7m4 vs x-h2 yesterday: in base iso the Fuji held a good amount more detail in a landscape shot (dynamic range interestingly was exactly the same)…BUT: when shooting Portraits of my son in iso 2000-5000 on both systems (fuji had 1.2 glass Sony 1.4 gm) the Sony absolutely WIPED the floor with Fuji, soo much more detail in eyes, eyelashes etc… i realized its a combination of the af not hitting as often (30% perfekt hitrate in low light, 80% „usable“) and fujis noise reduction taking some detail away

Nikon and canon both have a pleasing sharpness. I personally think Nikon has the best balance on this on both their last DSLR lens line, the G series and most of their new Z lenses. That said I think detail and IQ is really overrated when capturing people especially.

Lightroom user here. Unfortunately I also can’t get decent quality from the Fuji raws in LR. I retired now so I batch the files I like overnight through DXO Pure Raw which sends them back the LR as a DNG. The IQ difference is astonishing. I’m just not so sure you’ll take the time to batch 2000 files over night through DXO.

I think the issue is totally some kind of process issue with Lightroom. I’m just a hobbyist but have the XH2 and even in Capture One I notice a really large difference in detail inside the software. But when I export the final processed RAW, the jpegs are tack sharp with amazing detail.

A long time after the video went up, but people might like to know that the GF 80mm is notoriously slow for AF. The GFX 50S II doesn't have great AF, it's contrast detect only, but newer GF lenses will give much snappier AF performance. But I'd say, if really want to do weddings and events with GFX, the 100 ii will work much better. Huge files though and very expensive in comparison.

Have You demosaiced .RAF files to .DNG with Iridient X-Transformer or DXO PureRAW 3 before editing them in LR? That's the key proper editing X-Trans files.

I would have to agree with the difference to an extent on the fuji compared to Sony, however, I'm using an XH2s and an A9ll so both are very similar in specs but Sony does resolve more detail, not by much though. I also had the XH2 on loan for a few weeks and at higher ISO loses detail but upto 3200 it was great, and preferred those files to the now-sold A7r4a (which I hated) . Im not a fan of the retro dials since they just get in the way of how i shoot so the XH2s and XH2 suit me better apart from the filppy screen which annoys me, they are better imho than the XT5 with the extras in those bodies but would much prefer the XT5 screen. Im still on the fence about whether to offload the remainder of my Sony gear and replace it with the XH2. if the fuji had a permanent glowing AF point as often lost where it is especially when using the rear screen and the XH series had the tilt screen, and Fuji could fix the fluttering evf in various shooting scenarios then win-win. GFX would be amazing with the AF of the X series but overkill for weddings, no matter what anyone says it's just the photographer's vanity that they use an MF camera at weddings and want to appear cool, which is also the case with a lot of Fuji shooters....oooppps. to clarify I've had Fujis in my bag alongside my other gear for 10 years, missed out the XT4 though.

I am a traditional Sony shooter who swapped from an a9ii, a1 and a7siii to the Fuji ecosystem of xh2, xh2s , x100v and a battery of lenses. In my experience, if you use dxo or capture one the output from the Fuji xh2s is superior in terms of colour, in terms of resolution to the a9ii. In Lightroom the opposite would be my findings. I think the xh2s with the latest firmware sits between a9ii and a1 from an af performance. I love it. The xh2 is not as good af as the a9ii and I’m hoping Fuji improve the af further in the future. My 0.02 but I much prefer the Fuji system to my Sony.

I currently own and shoot both the aforementioned Fujifilm and Panasonic S5iix systems. When low light continuous is required I agree FF has an advantage, however outside of extreme corner cases and extreme low light continuous, the Fuji on the latest firmware and fast glass holds up fine to the Sony and Panasonic. Frankly any camera released within the last 5 years or so is good enough to ‘get the job done all day’ for most shoots if you’re a reasonably competent photographer. FWIW Benjamin Kanerak (commercial photographer who shoots regularly for Vogue, esquire, etc… ). He uses an XT3 and XT4 :)

What ISO are you using with the XT5 when comparing to the Sony? I switched to Sony a few years ago and from what I recall the Sony handles higher ISO a stop or two better. I'm wondering if that is why you see less detail in the Fuji. High ISO and noise reduction destroys details. My guess is at base ISO the details are relatively similar, but the Sony will always beat the Fuji at ISO 1600+.

I echo what you are saying. I love the fuji files but I am forever comparing the files to my R6 but I cannot let go of my fuji kit. I'm hoping Lightroom will really sort out their processing so we can see the sharpness the lenses can render.

Also a Sony shooter who just picked up a xt30ii for travel. Love the camera but Lightroom definitely does something to the Fuji files. Even with latest Fuji 23mm 1.4 LM WR it's not even close to my Sony in terms of quality. Shooting straight JPEGs makes me abit uncomfortable at the moment so I'm sticking with editing raw. You mentioned you're using a custom film recipe for your x100v. Mind sharing? Would love to try.

I've found that no matter what you do in Lightroom, you cannot get the same sharpness that the Fuji JPEGs produce straight-out-of-camera. Lightroom kills the detail of Fuji RAWs, even with the enhance and texture tools.

My workflow with ACR camera profiles and Luts means I'll never use Capture One unless somehow we can import profiles. I've dabbled with converting XML to ICC before, but the colours are always off. People want overly sharp images these days which is where ACR sucks and C1 does well.. But I turn off sharpening all together. It looks unnatural. Some of my vintage lenses I still find TOO sharp. I mostly shoot manual at weddings. but find autofocus when walking down the aisle is a must, I did get caught out with my Fuji where it was picking up people clapping at the sides as faces! WTF. luckily I was using 2 cameras and got the shots.

Interesting video that gets a 👍 from me. If it's a professional job, why not use the best autofocus system you already have, because it will be a shame to lose a good moment, am I right? However, know that trying something new (G.A.S.) occasionally affects us all more or less, but personally I always end up thinking if it's not broken why fix it, so instead I look more at something new glass as inspiration, but it is also difficult when one's glass is already GM or G. Yes, it is not always easy to overcome one's need for new equipment, but luckily with age I have gotten better at getting over it. I know we're all different, but it was just a little about me and new gear, so good luck on your photography journey!

this definitely isnt the best recommendation, especially for weddings but if you're planning on using that GFX for still life shots i highly recommend the Mitakon 65 1.4! You mentioned that you've used the pentax 67 in the past and this Mitakon give you a nearly identical look to the 67/ 105 2.4!

It's so true what you say about the Fuji APSC vs 35mm. Too long a story to tell in full, but after 11 years of battling it out with Fuji and Lightroom, I've recently swapped over to two Nikon Z bodies, a bevy of their gorgeous Z lenses and Capture One. The difference is off the planet and it is the best thing I've ever done. Even my customers commented on how my images are so much richer and deeper and more gorgeous. I'm actually amazed how I kept any customers using Fuji for all those years. The Z50mm and Z24mm 1.8S lenses are just about glued on my cameras for all my events/weddings and gigs. The Nikon files are gorgeous and are just so rich and deep and process so well in C1. Was great to discover your channel. I'm a Kiwi but live in Perth now, but it's great to hear the accent and to get a glimpse of my wonderful homeland. Keep up the good work Chris.

Enhance details in lightroom improves the demosaicing for fuji files a lot. Takes some time but you don't have to use another program.

Unfortunately, Lightroom doesn't support Xtrans files properly and cannot resolve all details from it. It shouldn't be that visible if you apply sharpening but if it bothers you I recommend to convert these raw files into DNGs using ether Capture One or DxO or other converters that support Xtrans files and then edit DNGs. They will look perfect

lightroom converts dng on import.. and then add a preset on import with sharpening.. a raw file is raw.. so no sharpering

Do you know about the Lumix S5ii real time LUTs work on jpegs. You basically upload your custom LUT which can match your preset and have edited jpegs SOC. be interested to see a review on that. Plus their 1.8 primes are all sharp and fast

Great vid. I spent 2 years with Fuji. Used Capture one, LR, Alien exposure. tried everything. Went back to full frame because of the files and depth. Why oh why Fuji still remain to stubborn to go down the full frame route. They would clear up the market. A joy to use, great quality lenses.

Fuji is a much smaller company than the big 3 (Canon, Nikon and Sony). The amount of R&D they would have to put into a FF system would either bankrupt them before the camera was released or during it's release because it would never reach a market share like the others do. I personally love using my Fuji cameras professionally. Like with any system, you get used to how works
