Hey peeps! Come check out some of the foods I took home after some shopping at a German supermarket. I eat all of the German supermarket food back in the apartment afterwards. Join me, and let's appreciate the diversity in this world :)

Ritter sport can be found in Sweden as well, although not nearly as many different flavours. I went to Berlin with my sister back in 2019, and she freaked out when I told her that I found a Ritter Sport store, because she really loves that brand. Definitely will go back to Germany when this pandemic is over.

Philip from Adelaide here. I'm really enjoying your videos as they bring back lots of memories from our stays in Germany. Here's a tip. Try some of the discount supermarkets such as Netto, Penny, Lidl. Take us for a visit shopping there too. You will get a really pleasant surprise at the quality/price. Netto for example have very cheap pre-packaged cheesecake in the bakery section....and up the back, in the refrigerator, smoked sardines. Just grill a couple minutes. The low fat quark cheese is a really cheap way to get protein and tastes good on salad. Keep on trying everything! Asparagus season for you soon!

Oh, and if you want an adventure, there is an old fashioned tramway from Rahnsdorf to Woltersdorf. It is so cute, going through forest and can be used depending on your transport pass. The forest out that side of Berlin is really pretty. It is famous for a mystical animal . Rasselbock. (hare and deer parentage) You will see there are some restaurants in the country areas with that name. Then in Kopernick you have another famous legend... the list goes on an on. You could become famous telling the world about Berlin.

Even as a German I love your videos man! The quality of your content is insane, so please keep it up (especially videos like this). I also have to say that your german pronounciation is really good. I am from the very north of Germany so it's refreshing to see Berlin from the view of an Australian. Especially because many Germans want to do a work and travel year in Australia, thus it's funny to see that Australians in Germany exist:D You also have a really calm and chill way of presenting cultural things and differences and also the expertise to really know what things are typicslly German things (eg "Pombären")

Leberwurst REALLY depends on the brand you pick up. Like, I am not a big fan usually, but I absolute love the "deluxe" Leberwust which is usually sold around Eastern and Christmas. Especially the ones with Truffels in it. Otherwise, I noticed that you went to Edeka...quite an expensive choice for a student. I recommend picking up the basics as a discounter (Aldi, Penny, Lidl aso) and only go to Edeka for the stuff they don't have and a few things where they have the better variant.

Eating raw mett from a supermarket is very brave. In the past there were some scandals where the labels of old products have been replaced. If i would eat raw mett, i would get it at a metzgerei. In addition to onions, parsley tatses really nice. Whatever you try, toast is usually not the first choice of any german. A Brötchen or Bread would be prefered.

....believe me, you see it if mett isn't fresh anymore. The scandals relating to meat in the supermarket were all about meat which has been put into some some of marinade or sauce. Because that stuff does a great job hiding the actual freshness-level of the meat you pick up. But with "pure meat", your eyes and sense of smell are more than good enough to see if it is reasonably fresh or not. But yeah, the best raw meat is the one from the Biometzger.

The duck/goose liver pate is actually a recent addition to German mainstream. One only used to be able to find it in Delikatessen butcher shops and the like. It is mostly a French staple item, but French food has always been popular in Spain, so Pate is more mainstream there, too. When I say "recent" kids are going to frown at me, cause I mean "within the last 15-20 years, or so" 🤣.

@@ExpatCaptures the brand coins are excepted in the terms of course, but yes, they are usually very chill about such things but lets say, a regional manager (or even higher up) is in the market looking at how things are handled, as they do from time to time ... someone using that might come in handy to show, that they do indeed take things seriously. So if there is one in suit and tie with a nervous looking staffer around, better not to use it ;)

"Dickmanns" doesn't sound naughty to germans. You can basically translate it to "Fat man's" but i think "Dickmann" was actually the name of the brand owner. "Dick" means "fat" or "thick" in german. No genital implications here 😂 They were commonly (but unofficially) known as "Negerküsse" or "Mohrenköpfe" not that long ago. That would actually be illegal now, because both terms are related to people with black skin color 😅

Those peeled potatoes in a jar are most likely pickled. You've dodged a bullet there. By the way. A lot of people from other countries are worried about mett being raw meat. To calm you down: Mett is heavily tested and regulated, which is what makes it save, we don't go around and eat just any raw ground meat and wouldn't recommend that.

Yes, Grützwurst is a type of blood sausage, thickened with wheat or such. I like to put it in (pure) kale. That way its already seasoned and it tastes real good. Also, the texture of the grützwurst which many do not like at all is replaced with that of the kale and more pallatable for everyone. Beware, it tends to burn, when added too early. Put in after finishing the cooking of the kale :)

If you like Pom Bär you will LOVE "Pommels Original" ! But I´d recommend to explore organic food shops in Germany if you want to have a healthy diet. I was raised with the foods you have shown in this video. But I don´t buy any of that 40 years later anymore. I consider it all as junk food. Way too much sugar in almost all of them. You might want to add up the sugar you just ate for this video and compare it to the WHO recommendation (max. 30g per day) ;_)
