You nearly had it right eating the pie and mash. The correct procedure is to turn the pies over, break the bottom of the pie open, add vinegar to the pie mash and liquor, then eat with the spoon. The fork is just to assist. You also should have had stewed eels (hot), mash, and liquor. Jellied eels are normally a snack to have with a few beers. Years ago a lot of pubs used to have a seafood stall outside, so you'd have some beers and pop outside for a bowl of jellies, or a plate of cockles or whelks, all liberally covered in vinegar and white pepper.

Full marks to you two for taking a crack at a traditional London food that most modern Londoners wouldn’t touch! I lived in London for many years and never tried the stuff, even though for some of those years I lived near Dalston, where there was another cafe that sold jellied eels, pie and liquor, and the full cockney catastrophe. Now that I’m back in New Zealand, where I was born, jellied eels are nowhere to be found, although we have plenty of meat pies here. We also have Japanese sushi shops, and I’ve sometimes tried eel sushi and quite liked it. If I ever find myself in London again I’ll definitely seek out a plate of jellied eels, just for the novelty of it.

Hi Dara... When i was a child... Mum used to take me shopping to our local Indoor Market... Mainly to pick up a joint of Meat each week for our Sunday Roast... Sometimes it was Lamb... Pork... or Beef... As well as the cheaper Poultry... Then while we were in there... We would also buy our Cheese... Eggs... Bacon... Sausages... Cooked Ham... Fish... And as a regular treat each week... Mum would take me to the Seafood Stall... Where i would be allowed to have some shellfish... They were served on a tiny saucer... I used to have either Cockles or Mussels in Vinegar... But if i had been particularly good that week... I was also treated to either a Dressed Crab... Or a bag of fresh Periwinkles to take home too... Where i would use a safety pin to dig them out from their shells to eat... And sometimes i would be treated to either some Crab Sticks or the much larger Crayfish Sticks... 😋 Mum always knew i was a seafood lover... So whenever she could... She would always treat me while we were out shopping on a Saturday morning... I've never tried Jellied Eels myself... But that's more to do with the fact that i don't really like Jelly... I don't even like it in Pork Pies either... And so i have to remove it whenever i have them... 😂 I still keep watching your videos Dara... I loved the recent ones on the UK's Christmas Adverts... 👌 Say hi to Ian for me... And give my regards to the whole family too... I'll drop you a message on your channel before Christmas... Until then guys... All the best... Cheers. 🍺🍺

They are cooked with two different types of pastry. I believe the bottom is suet based which is why it stays soft and looks almost uncooked. The top is a flaky type pastry that complements the bottom perfectly.

@@rickb3645 I'm old enough to remember when Lamb was the cheapest meat (New Zealand), Mutton even cheaper. Chicken was a luxury as a roasting bird, the cock birds, was over four times the price of a broiler, the old hens past egg producing, as only suitable for stews or soup. It's all the other way round now, Mutton almost impossible to find as few farmers keep sheep for wool production anymore. Pork and Beef were about the same price and the pork was darker with more flavour, slow grown Pigs, in the open and fed swill (the waste food) from restaurants and canteens, it was all boiled up to kill the Bacteria, the Pigs often allowed to graze in old Orchards for an apple flavour to the meat.

This is very much a London thing, as far as I am aware there are no stores thst sell jellied eels outside of the East End. We have one pie and mash shop in Liverpool, and we'll it does just enough business to keep afloat but is hardly packed whenever I go past, and from the few people that I have spoken to who have gone in, its very much because they were charmed by the fact that an East end novelty could be found up here, but it was a try once and never again type of thing.

If you go back in time, various things were the food of the poor - go back to Roman times in the UK, and oysters were cheap and plentiful, go back 1-200years and the poor ate herrings. In other era cod was food for the poor. Eels were food for the poor around 100-150 years ago. There is nothing to dislike about jellied eels, although I skin them before cooking and the jelly is no different to cooking meat of any kind on the bone - the gravy jellies when cold. Eel just tastes of fish, and from what I learn online, the average American eats very little fish. Fish is like lamb - very much an aquired taste unless you are brought up with it. (I love lamb - there is some cooling from the oven, now.) Smoked eel is to DIE for, and fried is better than jellied.

'm an East Londoner and was raised eating Pie and Mash. Some turn the pies and others don't (I'm a don't). The Liquor often puts people off...and probably would even more so if they discovered that the main liquid stock is actually taken from the juice that the Eels are cooked in. Salt, White Pepper and Vinegar are the condiments of choice (Chilli Vinegar if you choose). I'll admit that Eels, either stewed or jellied, don't LOOK appetising, but if you can get past the sight and "give it a chance" then you might have discovered one of life's great ingredients !! 10 out of 10 for trying, you Guys :):)

You have to remember back in the day people didn’t have fridges, so they poured pork bone stock (full of gelatin) on foods to preserve them for a few more days. The rivers were full of eels so poor people would catch them and eat them, and keep them under jelly for the next few days. We might not think much of them now but that’s because we live in a world of plenty. Back then none of us would have turned our noses up if the alternative was starving.

How brave of you to try Jellied Eels - sorry but I had to skip that part of the video as they looked dreadful. As a Brit, I have never tried them and have no intention of doing so. Well done both of you.

You are braver than me. I'm northern English and jellied eels makes me want to run 100 miles very quickly. That's one dish Londoners can, enjoy and keep to themselves in my opinion.

So I'm originally from the east end and once tried jelled ells...i had to sink a few pints first to try it. The worst rhing I ever tried, although another fishy thing rollmops is another not to try too, herring. Pie n mash is not appreciated outside the east end, but I get it delivered to my door in rural oxfordshire. It is one of the few things i really miss from living there. Try cockles and winkles, though!

Hiya. Oh, I did laugh. I, too, dislike jellied eels, but strangely I like Brawn which is traditionally made by boiling a pig's head (or/and trotters). Or just have the pig's trotters, known as Crubeens in Ireland. Mmm. Stay safe. All the best to you.

I admire your commitment to your own brand, but this was above and beyond from you two.👍 I grew up with a dad who loved jellied eels. I myself will put all sorts of interesting things in jelly that many would not, however even I won't go there.😉 I did try Pie and Mash with liquor once and that was plenty, it was thin and lacking in flavour, not terribly well cooked in my view.🙄 Others told me it was as good as it gets. I don't get it with that style.🤨 I know there's is little or no hope of me going there again.🤞 Hat's off to you both.😀 I'm somewhat in awe that you toughed it out.👍 Be well and find some decent Brit grub next time.🤔 We do have some good stuff, but that probably was not it. 🙂Be well. 😉

oh dear, you're very brave. Prairie oysters, no worries; andouillette, love it; even pie and mash with liquor is fine. jellied eels are a very special form of protean, nothing wrong per se, just a waste of eel. they can be so tasty, but smothered in gelatin and bad vinegar.....

My friends Mark and Steve Button run Barneys Seafood, once of Tower Hill Gateway, but now Shop 1 in Billingsgate. I enjoy your vids - happy days. Have you been in The Lake District (my home) yet? the pies are made with suet pastry on the bottom and normal pastry on the top, should have had a tiny bit of salt and vinegar on the liquor, and the jellied eels?, vinegar and salt and pepper..they are tasty, you have to remember that other stuff you take for granted, is not always great ..x from a Londoner

Agree with the comments. The majority of us Brits would run a hundred miles from jellied eels. You're most likely right about rationing after the war. Strange it's still a thing all these years later. Powdered eggs and eating spam from a tin vanished years ago. No idea why they didn't! 😂 Bravo for trying guys! 👏
