5:54 Filipino-style spaghetti started off as a poor man's bolognese in the 1940s-60s. The usual meat and sauce ingredients were expensive, so substitutions were made to lower costs. Hotdogs to cut down on minced meat quantity, and banana ketchup to make up for the shortage of tomato supplies. The sweetness is generally a result of tweaking to suit local taste preferences.
@king24km2 ай бұрын
We Filipino have no hotdogs back in ,1940 , infact we have sausage called langgonisa way way back in 1500
@hyyh20152 ай бұрын
@ddongjjang-r5f to my memory i know there are still some people who do use banana ketchup when ready-made spaghetti sauce isn't available or they do add it in with tomato sauce for added sweetness; most likely for nostalgic reasons or it's a much cheaper alternative
@seanabj2 ай бұрын
@ddongjjang-r5f Yeah I know that was before, which why I said "started off as". Of course the ingredients have changed over time, but the flavour profile is still the same - sweet. It objectively IS sweet compared to the traditional Italian equivalent. You literally said it is in another comment, so it's confusing that you're saying it "isn't".
@seanabj2 ай бұрын
@@king24kmWhen America colonised the Philippines in the late 1800's, they introduced various western cuisines, food items and canned goods, especially during the war periods - this included the good ol' hotdog. But yeah, longganisa has been the sausage in place long before that.

Hi Ben! As you were asking about the prices, I'm currently on my Study Abroad semester in the Phills and this is what it would cost: * Jolly Spaghetti Family Pan: P261 (4.64 USD) * 8 - pc Chickenjoy Solo: P604 + P24 for half OG and half Spicy (11.16 USD) * Peach Mango Pie: P45 (0.80 USD) * Extra Chickenjoy Gravy: P12 (0.21 USD), but it's not as big as in the US tho haha Which brings this to a subtotal of 16,82 USD without the sandwich and juice Strangely enough they don't have the exact sandwich and juice in QC where I live though. And you mentioned you'd like some veggies, but in PH, imported veggies are quite expensive like broccoli for example. So ig that's why it's not in Jollibees menu.

@ddongjjang-r5f That might play a part, but the main reason NYC is so expensive is the high rent, wages, and the cost of getting the food from processing to prep. Even with all that, it’s still way overpriced compared to other fast food spots in the city. I know because I lived there for a while.

For anyone interested, the prices are WAY LOWER in the PH. You can get a combo 6 pcs. chicken joy with family spaghetti for P679, which is about 12 USD. If you add the other stuff, it's give or take P1000~ which is about 18 USD. Do note that some of the serving sizes such as the spicy chicken sandwich are smaller. The chicken size should be roughly the same if not slightly smaller. That said, you can buy almost 5x more food here (cuz the average wage is probably 5-10x less).

Yeah I understand the confusion about the Jolly Spaghetti. It really is an acquired taste. As some people in the comments might have already told you, its flavor profile was due to finding a sustainable substitute for the short supply of tomato, which the surplus of bananas filled. It definitely isn't the case now but most Filipinos grew up to that sweet style spaghetti because it is a staple food in fiestas and birthday parties along with fried chicken and cake. That is why you see a menu item combining spaghetti + chicken in Jollibee.

@bubzillian super easy bro! Get evaporated milk. Not sweetened condensed milk that'll taste like the bottled shit that says " donair sauce " on it. Way too sweet cause there's already a lot of sugar in this recipe. So. A can of evaporated milk in a bowl/dish I then coat the top with about a teaspoon or so of garlic powder and use a fork to slowly stir/mix 1 cup of white sugar in so that it dissolves easier and not some clump on the bottom. I do the garlic powder before this step cause the stirring of sugar mixes it at the same time. Now get a little stir going and pour in a 1/3 of a cup of white vinegar. Don't over stir and just let it curdle and do it's thing in the fridge. If you stir it right up you'll "break" it. Give it a try and re comment what ya think I wanna hear it !

Yeah I’m Filipino and I personally just never liked the spaghetti. I never really liked Filipino spaghetti in general either. Maybe it’s cuz I grew up in America haha. But yeah glad you liked it! Next time if you can, you should try the Palobok! That’s what I would recommend instead. Also if you get the chance to try the yum burgers that would be cool. Those are my personal fave

The sauce taste like ketchup (banana ketchup in the Philippines). That's why it reminded Ben of a better version of chef Boy-r-dee (canned pasta). I'd argue the taste of Jolibee's spaghetti is like the best item on the kid's menu. I can't defend myself when another adult asks me why I ordered it. I want it, I know it isn't "good" but I never needed to explained why I liked the "McRib" from McDonald's".

Filipino spaghetti originated from Southern US spaghetti recipes.
@kiminielee28Ай бұрын
NO. ITS ORIGINATED@@SwaggMessiah69 DURING WAR WHEN EVRYTHING WAS RATIONED.. THIS WAS NOT INSPIRED IN SOUTHERN US WHATSOEVER. THIS IS MADE DUE TO LOW TOMATOES DURING WAR AND THE SWEETNESS CAME FROM BANANA KETCHUP INSTEAD.

I'm dating a filipina, i hated the spaghetti at first but it has grown on me since I don't think of it as tomato sauce spaghetti anymore. At face value, it is banana ketchup noodles and there are some chinese restaurants that make baked chicken with tomato sauce and noodles that taste similar.

You sold me!! I've watched several Jollibee reviews and have been very cautious. I don't like throwing away my money. I wanted to play it safe with my chicken. But no one has said anything negative about the chicken yet. So, I'll doordash some. If something is seriously wrong with it, I can always get a refund or credit from DD. Which is something I appreciate them for Happy holidays to all.

Good you tried it bro. We have a few locations here in Houston, Texas but to be honest with you it's freakin expensive. For me just by myself my go to is the family size spaghetti.
