Keep the comments and suggestions for the next snack video coming! By the way... I'm so sorry for not shaking the chocolate milk on camera. I promise as soon as the video was finished and I drank the rest of it, it was very much shaken!! Thank you so much to everyone who has suggested different things to try and given me their thoughts on how best to enjoy certain snacks. You are all educating me so much and it's fantastic. Thank you again. I will do my best to reply to everyone! Curls

Cabruary NZ changed from cocoa butter to palm oil to cut cost about 10 years ago and there was a huge public backlash because it tasted different (they said it wouldn't taste different), and most NZ changed over to Whittakers and never looked back. The downfall of cabruary, they tried changing back but it was too late and now the factory in NZ is closed down.

@slartibartfasttynsol420

Yeah - they were trying to improve the numbers before the sale to Kraft in 2010. They shrank the bars, switched to less environmentally friendly packaging that disguised the reduced size, and put palm oil in, so you got less chocolate. The palm oil was the last straw for me. Farming of palm oil is responsible for deforestation, and loss of habitat, driving species to extinction. The farming uses herbicides and pesticides which cause health issues for the farmers community. The farmers live in poverty, with no choice but to farm. Additionally, palm oil is high in saturated fats, and once oxidized in food production can pose health issues for consumers. I avoid Cadbury products. (Made easier by the fact that Whitkars tasks better.)

I work in a post shop, and the three biggest items sent are, Reduced Cream, Onion Dip, and Whittaker's Chocolate.They are the most requested items by expats from their family's here in New Zealand. The Pineapple Lumps used to be better, but Pascals changed their recipe and they are not as good as they used to be. With the chocolate milk, when it first came out you had to line up to get it and the you were limited to how many you could get at a time, even then you were lucky to get one as they kept selling out and they couldn't keep up with the production. Didn't get to try one until six months had passed, haven looked back since, but you are right they are a real treat item due to the cost. But soooo worth it :) When we have a BBQ or family get together the fights over the onion dip can get a bit intense.

I'm 73. I was a pre-teen and teenager through the 1960's. Nestlé had their Reduced Cream in a tin, which wasn't wildly popular when we still had fresh dairy products delivered to the gate every morning. Including fresh cream. At the same time, Maggi powdered soups were new to NZ and again, people hesitated to buy. Making your own soup was so normal for the post war family. Rosemary Dempsey popularised (maybe invented ?) the Onion dip. Among us under 20's it took off like crazy ! We had no wartime memories of 'canned dairy' or 'powdered soup' and it was quick and easy to prepare, and could wait until your flatmates had a party. Then, all on !! Simpler times, I know ❤

(A delicacy not a complete food source). Why they closed our coast here was from hundreds of outside vehicles and to be openly honest, Asian migrants. Their specialty was wiring the rocks, in which doing, everything is taken. Driving from as far as Auckland and Hawkes Bay for a tide these wankers are now noted, and their tyres slashed. We have a smaller legal paua size here, and the outsiders were taking the lot, tide after tide.

This is the best video I have seen of someone trying Kiwi food for the first time! You tried all the right things and followed the right steps, even including the lemon juice in the onion dip - bang on! Others have tried it and completely skipped that step and honestly, it's not right. It needs that acidic touch. Adding salt and vinegar chips - also very wise! Nothing else matches it better. Also, Blue V is the BEST! I was obsessed with it a years ago but now it's so good as a once in a while treat! Honestly you share the same opinion as me on all of the foods! Lewis Road Creamery is dream worthy - but it's so costly it definitely is not the kind of thing you can indulge in often. Thanks for posting this video! So good!

THE iconic kiwi chocolate bar is the Whitkars Peanut Slab. The milk chocolate one is the original (not the dark or the almond). I remember being so annoyed when Cadbury's tried to steal/ copy this and brought out the 'Slab', exact small size. Thank goodness local Kiwi's refused to buy it and it is no longer!! Of course the NZ Marmite goes without saying, it's thicker than the UK version. Other classic childhood treats that you can normally only get from the local dairy are K-bars and Toffee Milk bars. Both are hard, tooth breaking bars, especially the K-bar. You have to really suck on this one! These are both from Whittakers. Original Toffee Pop biscuits are a classic. There is a technique for eating these that is also important for a lot of fans. You nibble the fluted edge of the biscuit first, before eating the rest! Tip Top brand Jelly tip ice creams (on a stick). Ice cream sandwich, with the square vanilla ice-cream sandwiched between two slices of pink wafers. You are going to be busy!!

Whittakers was a small but well known local brand...I'm 65 and can remember Whittaker Sante Bars...unwrapped dark chocolate sticks after school. If you like the homemade onion dip and you if you like or are fond of seafood try using a seafood soup mix instead of the onion and a dash of vinegar, it's quite tasty. Also Bluebird makes a thick cut version of the salt and vinegar chips/crisps you like. As a kiwi who loves both salt and vinegar chips and classic kiwi dip, I actually prefer plain ready salted chips to dip into it, or a good carrot stick! Also in our household we put in a dash of malt vinegar AND a dash of Worcestershire sauce and it tastes AMAZING! In regards to pineapple lumps, they used to be a lot softer and more chewy... it's kind of sad they're tougher now. Scorched almonds have been a thing for my entire life (coming up to 18 years), since they are a very popular Christmas gift.

you can try putting pineapple lumps in the freezer. it's not for everyone but then the pineapple toffee shatters when you bite them. try it, it's hard to describe. great when it's sweltering in the summer :) also scorched almonds have been here since at least the late 80s. there was an advertising push to associate them with christmas with a very cute little girl wrapping them individually and that was in 1992. the dark chocolate ones are soo moorish. classic fathers day chocolate and christmas dinner table chocolate. the kiwi onion dip - you can try another type of maggi soup packet. i like the classic onion with some lemon but lots of people use bacon and onion soup and french onion soup packets instead. you are also competely correct about the lewis road milk. when they first brought it out it kept selling out all over the country and made the 6 o'clock news, it was ridiculous :) great videos, love the wholesome content, glad you're enjoying nz with us :D xox
