So glad you enjoyed it! But just want to clarify, the flavors are (and were much more simple due to the colder weather being able to keep food without heavy salt and seasoning). The Nengnyun is Pyungyang style which was a very popular regional food - enjoyed long long before the division of the country. As a Korean with Pyungyang grandparents, I would really appreciate correcting the information as your influence is vast!
@kait958
@kait958 7 ай бұрын
saying the food is made simple because of the scarcity of food and ingredients under a controlling and limiting dictator isn’t far off either. people are starving to death in nk. I don’t think the joking comment about their dictator requires correction when their people are starving. he deserves criticism. as someone who also has grandparents from nk…it’s fine

@@kait958for people who don't understand the origin of this noodles dish, it could easily be misinterpreted its simplicity due to the dictatorship. I was taken aback when she mentioned that was the cause because the dish has its long history prior to the end of Korean war where the country was divided in half.

Seriously. I was shocked when I heard that comment. She grew up in South Korea, right? How sheltered do you have to be as a South Korean girl to not know this. It's like she goes to a naeng-myun joint and says "Oh, those poor North Koreans, having to eat so sparingly."

Keep in mind that even the ubiquitous pepper used in gochugaru and gochujang is a New World vegetable. The pepper plant likely did not take in northern climes. but the chili flakes made its way up north. Instead of the sparseness of naeng myun, you should mention it's purity. People love the way it is. There is no fusion, or street food, or Western foodie slanted version of it. It may be because Northerners are nostalgic for what they had in the past.

North Korean food situation is bad for a combination of reasons, it's also the climate is on average colder thus longer winters than the South, and they don't have much farmland because their terrain is more mountainous and soil quality is not the best. Also international sanctions sure don't help with industrial capacity.

I just found out about it recently and idk if it’s common there, but i saw a YT recipe about “Tteokkochi”? I feel it’s close to filipino karioka, but just sweet and spicy rolls of pan fried rice cakes, instead of the deep fried rice balls that are sugary sweet. Maybe you can do a video about all the tteok dishes and ways people cook with those rice cakes?

Fellow Pinoy here living in SK. I would say it's very different. Karioka is eaten as a merienda and is sugary sweet while tteok-kkochi can be eaten as an appetizer and is spicy and tangy sweet because of the gochujang.

They specialized in it and I love the whole experience. From the main dish to the fried rice at the end. I took my parents there when I was leaving Korea after 3 years and they didn't eat a bite...those punks. Oh well, more for me! Thanks and really love your content. Miss Korea so much!! There is a story that I hear when my family eats 냉면. when the Japanese took over Korea they had buckwheat and they didn't like it because it is hard to chew so they gave it to the Koreans. When the Koreans ate it they loved the flavor so now we still eat it today. Don't know how true this is but still a good story.

Among the food culture of Korea, special things that distinguish it from the food culture of other countries. // 1. Perfect lacto-vegetarian food represented by Korean Buddhist temple food. And this diet began in AD 372. 2. An endless variety of soup dishes represented by ‘Sinseollo’, Korea's finest cuisine 3. Kimchi: Vegetables fermented with animal protein represented by cabbage kimchi. In the past, only Koreans made and ate it. There are over 800 types of kimchi. 4. Jeotgal: A fermented animal-based sauce made from seafood. In Korea, there are more than 140 different types of salted fish. 5. Ssam: It means wrapping all the ingredients you want to eat in various leafy vegetables represented by lettuce. You have to swallow them in one bite, so you need to adjust the amount of ingredients to be wrapped appropriately. And there is a record that around the 5th century, Koreans grew lettuce, made 'ssam', and ate it. 6. Herbal Medicine Ingredients : Herbal medicine ingredients are not only eaten for special diseases or health, but are also often used for general home cooking. For example, as ingredients for Samgye-tang, Mulberry, Tree Aralia, Eleutherococcus Sessiliflorus, Mongolian Milkvetch, Korean Angelica, Ginger, Jujube and Korean Ginseng are used. 7. Namul : South Korea is the country that eats a lot of dishes made with only vegetables without meat and seafood protein. Namul are foods made with one edible plant as the main ingredient. Do not mix other vegetables. Examples of the types of Namul include Shepherd's Purse, Stringy Stonecrop, Korean Angelica-tree, Korean Wild Chive, Butterbur, Bracken, Doellingeria Scabra, Bamboo Shoot, Chamnamul and Cirsium Setidens. 8. Cold Noodles: Korea developed the world's first cold noodle dish, and it is the place where the whole nation began to enjoy eating. The reason is that the summer is hot and the water in valleys, rivers and wells is clean.. According to literature, the history of Naengmyeon goes back to the Goryeo Dynasty(918~1392). Besides Naengmyeon, Kong-guksu, Mak-guksu, Milmyeon, Kimchimari-guksu, Bibim-guksu, and Jjolmyeon exist in Korea. // Etc... Korea shows a distinctly different food culture from neighboring countries in Far East Asia (China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Japan).

I think historically, Korean food from the northern half of the Korean peninsula has a different taste than the food from the southern half of the Korean peninsula. Southern Korean cuisine tastes different because of the strong influences from outside the Korean peninsula, initially Japan but more recently other Western influences.
