Pretty sure that's wet tumbling media. The water is what keeps the media from clogging. It carries away contaminates and allows a constantly clean and fresh cutting-edge on the abrasive. Similar to how wet sandpaper works. Vinegar or muriatic acid would take half the time and would be less noisy. But I have several of those vibratory tumblers also.... And I do love them. I use them constantly because of the surface finish they leave, and their ability to handle certain parts that wouldn't be ideal to clean with acidic liquids.

If you use water, you want rust inhibitor too.

@@yendortgone exactly right. I usually use that water base cutting lubricant like we using CNC machines. Usually starts off some shade of green and then when you mix it with water it turns white and milky.

pro tip: put the magnet on the outside of a plastic sandwich baggie and turn the thing inside out. Once you've collected all the rust, turn the baggie right side out and pull the magnet away. The particles are all instantly pre-bagged.

Hey man next time you are using a magnet to pick up rust. Get a ziplock bag, put the magnet on the outside. Then just tap all the areas that have rust it will build on the ziplock bag. When you are done, remove the magnet, the rust stays in the bag and the magnet will stay clean. No loss of rust powder to you.

I have one of these and they just don't work well for rust removal. Even with coarser media they take days of straight run time to remove rust. It also gets very hot and can melt the lid. Soaking in evaporust overnight is a far better method to remove rust passively.

@@HandsomeOrHandy I saw a youtube vid , it flamed the aluminum to make it brittle , but that was foil . nb# he didnt allow it to burn away , just singed it , maybe you could work harden it , hammer it out before shredding it . If I remember correctly the guy in the vid made his own tumbler with ball bearings to help pulverize the foil into powder .
