Doing tutorials like this is brilliant, some people have air drying clay to hand, and they want to give it a go. Seeing from this video it means that people like me will practise with air dry and then move upto polymer when they have got a bit more practise. if they think maybe its not for them once they have tried with airdry clay then their money could go on something else

I'm wondering if you could have painted the piece with an undercoat of white before you added color. Sort of like putting a white primer on a wall before painting it. Maybe a coat of primer would have allowed your top acrylics to be brighter. I have used air dry clay in art classes I've taught. Because it was in a school, we could not buy the really good air dry clay, just the less expensive stuff. We did not do a form in foil, just made small bowls that could hold jewelry or trinkets. Covering them in a clear coat of some kind, helped to make them a little more stable. If I would have had more time with the students, we could have done something like what you did. This is really a wonderful way to introduce people to using clay. The air dry clay is easy to use, just not as permanent. They do crack and break easily. I worked with air dry clay and achieved great results [I sculpted an owlet, wish I could post it here], after he completely dried, I sprayed him with a gold finish. It held well, it's been over a year since his creation. I love many things magical/fantasy and you definitely achieved that in this piece. I especially love the witch house and hobbit home. i followed one of your tutorials using air dry clay instead of polymer clay. i find it very easy to work with, using water to blend pieces. you are right though, it does have a chunkier finish but it is very easy to add on other details and painting is a dream x

I use a homemade air dry clay. Fine details are achieved but the clay I use requires sanding to get a smooth surface. I also prime a piece before painting to use less paint and avoid streaking. I plan on trying a different brand of air dry clay but haven't had much luck with the bought ones.

I also use air-dried clay I make, cold porcelain. I am able to get a lot of detail with it, but it's thin as I make life-like flowers for the most part. It is a great clay though it will have shrinkage, so I would not use a foil armature due to the shrinkage...unless I did thin, built up layers. (8-9-2020)

This is awesome Maive, for a first attempt you did an amazing job! As far as clay as a material goes I am the opposite to you, I sculpt with clay (I use paper clay as it doesn’t crack - I use Das or make my own) and am going to branch out into polymer - bought all the stuff just haven’t attempted yet!! I’d definitely recommend that you give it more tries, you’d be surprised at the detail you can get if you find a good clay to work with, especially if you are using sculpting tools - you can work in your detail that way. Paper clay is a good medium because it does enable you to leave it and add on to it later if you want to add more finesse to your sculpture and not worry about cracks! Anyway, love this! :-)

Thanks Whispy Willow! ^_^ Thank you very much for all the advice, I actually have Hearty paper clay at home, I bought it months ago for the purpose of trying it out with a project and see how it works and also because it's more eco friendly than polymer clay, and I thought that if I liked it enough or if it was suitable for all or most of my projects, I could switch entirely. I did hear that it doesn't crack which is a huge relief...I will see if after Hearty I can try Das...Made me laugh you have all the polymer clay supplies and have yet to use them ^_^ The best of luck with that!

Oh.. it's good you showed us this.. because I never thought of using tin foil for making a mushroom.. I don't know why.. But when I had air dry clay.. I make everything out of clay.. I am learning so much from this.. I recently got into clay so all the tips are welcome.

You can save a lot of clay by using tin foil skeletons and it won't be as heavy. Glad you found it helpful ;)

Great job! I haven't used regular air dry clay in a long time, the cracking always irritated me. I have been trying my hand at paper clay, you seem to have a little more time to work with it and it doesn't crack as much, and to me it just seems more stable.

I really like how you tackled your first attempt and with the clay dryer than it would have been new you did really well. I think paperclay is good for props but so many artists use it for small dolls and get lots of detail I was not able to do that but you can let it sit then add water to a place you want to add detail and just add on and keep washing it with water to get more detail and smoothness as you go but to tell the truth it is tough to get used to I prefer polymer clay for the really fine detail and I love your work in polymer

I have the clay you worked with but was told by another artist that uses air dry clay recommends the Paperclay product because it shrinks less as she uses it for BJD Ball Jointed Dolls. for me it takes to much getting used to and I love my polymer clay too much to switch.

i work with air dry clay only but i use crayola brand and it is more user friendly and handles paint better love the mushroom not the catapiller but i don't like catapillers so i think you did a good job as usual keep up the good work like to see a mouse project

Hi there, it has been a while since this video, so I was wondering if you could tell us a little bit about how the air dry clay shrunk over time? Did the foil and tape inside cope ok with that? Did the varnish crack or anything? What type of varnish was it also? Thanks for your time, it was lovely to watch this!

I've got a brick of fimo air dry that I've been trying to figure out what to do with. Your video helped me! I wonder if u can spray it with Mr Clear so the paint applies better? Modge podge seems too liquidy to put on it from the looks but I'm not sure. I'm obsessed with trying to recreate the look of actual pottery glaze. That's what I'm saving my air dry for. Like a native American inspired piece. Or a fairy Castle for fun!? ^_^ I like your caterpillar thanks for sharing!

I always use water based glazes with polymer clay, some brands of polymer clay have their own 😊

Fimo air is a pretty bad air dry clay. I prefer cold porcelain and you can dye the clay before using it. When dry cold porcelain is not porous and its pretty much like polymer clay. Loved the mushroom!

I used FIMO I think, because it's water based and it's compatible with the water based paints I used. but PVA glue as suggested by GeOrdieA55a55in would work too :)

Interesting have been looking at trying lol but I think I will use the porcelain clay to the Fimo air drying clay as the porcelain clay can be used almost like polymer clay minus the baking that’s all 😹😹 I love the toadstool and caterpillar rustic and ornamental as it is I have seen caterpillars as big as this if not bigger here in Australia and they too were bright green 😹😹😹 just never seen the butterfly they have turned into that’s all😿

This might be just me, but I'm wondering if you would feel the dry clay would have more of a story IF you were more experienced with it... You probably would get more into it and appreciate it more in that case :) It's after all, your first time! Right ?

Yes, that was my first time sculpting with air dry clay. I do believe that if I were more experienced with this type of clay I could have added more detail to the sculpture and possibly like it more ^_^

Scoring the clay to create an uneven surface for the catapiller to adhere to would fix the issue of it falling off easily.

Hmmm I've always had severe cracking using air dry clay. so much it ruins a sculpture. So I switched to paper clay. Is the only crack you had underneith the caterpillar?

I had one there and before I painted it, I saw there was one underneath the mushroom...I forgot to mention it but since this was a test and not a "serious" sculpture, it didn't bother me. I have paper clay at home I'd like to try on some petals and see how that goes ;)

Hi Maive, as always you've done an amazing job sculpting! It would have been easier to use "wetter" clay, and like with polymer clay you could sculpt every part seperatedly and then glue it together . It makes painting any details underneath much easier. The caterpillar could be propped up, by sculpting around a thin tinfoil core. But anyway I love your work, and admire your creativity. I prefer to use airdry clay for larger projects, as it is much cheaper and lighter than polymer clay.

I'd recommend a clear, strong glue like "Uhu" or E6000, you'll need very little and any left over traces can be hidden unter the varnish. Keep up your brilliant work, and thanks again for sharing your technics and creativity. And lastly I have a request for something with a hare, not nessecarily an Easter dekoration, just because they're my favourite animals.😊

because i did not have access to polymer clay when i first learned about sculpting, i only had access to air-dry clay. using air-dry clay, at first it got me so frustrated, i could not get it to show the details i see people get with polymer clay. but i kept using it, by the time it became my best clay (even after i used polymer clay) i learned that the secret to working with air-dry is to let layers dry before working other ( more detailed) layer. also air-dry show magical results when cooperated with other materials ,like sand or paper shreds, it gives different pretty textures

I think the caterpillar would ask you: "If money was no object, what would your heart most desire to do?" As for the clay, I would start with polymer clay because...polymer clay gives you the advantage of working it for as long as you want before you set it in the oven and you can work worry-free. With air-dry clay, if you're new to it, you may feel a little rushed ^_^

I don’t understand why you You the foil? Can’t it just be made with the formed clay?

The foil acts as a skeleton for the clay to sit on and it also saves you clay. A skeleton is needed to support the clay while it's drying, especially if it's very thin, as it will just collapse otherwise. Also by having a skeleton out of tin foil and the layer of clay being thinner, it helps it dry quicker.
