In this video, I'll be remastering scenes from the second episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender where Aang unlocks his most powerful form: The Avatar State.
Unlike my previous videos which were done through Procreate Dreams, I decided to try out Clip Studio Paint.
I hope you enjoy the video!

honestly, i would have LOVED to see Netflix spend the budget on remastering the series instead of live-actioning it, and i'm 101% certain i'm not alone in this

@@MadeByIsmael Yeah but I'm pretty if it is just costwise sure we will see a 16:9 remaster in the not so distant future. Animators + generative AI should do the job for a fraction of the live action budget :D

Dude, I've watched a lot of speedpaint videos in my time, but these videos are so fun to watch because of how well you structure your narration and bring us along for the journey. It's a whole new story while watching a story be remastered.

When I saw your job I thought "this guy should get hired by Nick!", then I thought "Let's make a team of animators and remaster the whole series as a fan project", then I just thought "I prefer to make my own animated series". And here I am, pre producing an animated series. You, @chunnykay, are an absolute motivation.

really liking this series! i appreciate that you arent just centering every shot, youre actually thinking about the composition of things. it made me think about that last shot you did with aang fainting and appa flying in. I think it could have been an interesting idea to split that shot up, so that aang is still framed the same, but then instead of drawing in extra appa frames, just move that whole section of the sky with appa flying in to the left side of the frame, and then just draw in the sky thats missing in the middle. i just thought that that would let the framing be nice, but it would also preserve the timing, where you see ang faint, and then see appa enter frame, instead of it happening simultaneously. i just thoght id throw this idea out there if you do any more in the future, and thats a method you think could be useful

I think something you should try to remember is that a lot of the shots you are matching are in 3 point perspective. The ship seems to be what's tripping you up the most. For example, the you drew the smokestack with paralel lines where it'd get wider near the base and we'd see more of the top of the stack. When doing perspective drawing by eye it helps to establish where the horizon line is (even if it's WAY out of frame) and to see if you have any visual cues for where the vanishing point would be. Rule of thumb, if 2 things are paralel, check to see if they have a vanishing point to help[ you find your perspective in the drawing.

You're right about no one frame needing to be perfect. When you show the final product at the end of the video, if you try to watch it from the eyes of someone who hadn't watched your whole video (and therefore won't be looking for details) it is 100% seamless. Great video, can't wait for you to finish the entire series ;)

I think perhaps Zuko's ship deck doesn't as intended because they kinda went from boards to something else when you drew them, maybe the angle of the lines are off too? Separating them into boards and fixing the angle I think would help. But overall I really liked the scene you did of him getting thrown off the ship! I think the frames of him and his crew getting pushed back by water and him falling overboard look really good!!! The moving ship looks good too.

I think for the final scene of Aang passing out, it would have been better to center him and slide the scene to the left instead of the right, and that would save you from the awkward floaty Appa. The main reason being, if you watch the original scene, your focus is on Aang for the first half, and you see he's about to pass out, but then right as you start to feel concern, Appa and the Gaang appear, and you know he'll be ok! Great job by the way! I could never hope to be this good!

9:19 I think the reason something feels off is because the light patch in the middle of the ship is supposed to act as a sort of spotlight, putting the focus on the characters on the ship. When you made the move to widescreen though, you continued the bright patch off to the far left side of the screen, which shifts the focus of the image a bit to the left and draws unwanted attention to the empty side of the ship. I would consider bringing in the darkness a bit closer to the center by rounding off the spotlight area (if you haven’t already done something to this shot since this video came out).

The reason the ship feels off around 9:30 is because there's a bit of a mysterious spotlight illuminating the center stage (so to speak). Your section on the left doesn't fade to dark like it should so the entire spotlight is an oval. Still good matching though.

Great job! For the last scene I think the jittery animation of appa is because he's too far away with only a few frames to cover the distance. I would have just put appa a little closer already in shot rather with only a little distance to cover to catch up original placement. But otherwise really well done I love these videos. I hope one day we get a full version of ATLA in widescreen

Instead of manually aligning the backgrounds with key frames, couldn't you track the background with two or more points and attach your background plate to the tracking points? Or isn't that an option in Procreate or Clip Studio Paint? Maybe you want to first do the background panning animation in blender and then move the frames over for the character animations on top of it.

I am not a digital artist however regarding matching materials, it might be worthwhile understanding how they are rendered in 3d to understand the different ways materials react to light(Physically based rendering.) I.e.: diffuse, specular, and reflections (the very latter of which you seem to already have a knack for.) Honestly though that is extreme nit-picking and I would happily watch your 16:9 adaptation any day. :)
