Girl you have so much gumption and I love it! Seriously impressed (former college cheerleader here ). Not sure if your school uses poms for games but we all used to tie our poms so we didn’t have to actually hold them and could have hands free to stunt/tuck etc - so we would tie a bunch of the strands together by the handle and slide 2-3 fingers through and then the Pom would sit almost on top of our fist after . Was thinking about how this might be an easy way to adapt poms for you and wanted to share! Can’t wait to see the joy you bring to the sidelines this season!

You know, I am a 47 year old woman who has had disc disease since my late 20s but the last 5 years it has gotten so much worse where I have had to use a mobility scooter to get around if a lot of walking is involved (like grocery shopping). I can honestly say that I never could imagine that a 17 year old could teach this old girl a thing or two. You have taught me that its okay to rely on help. I've always been an independent person so this has been really hard on me and I always feel like people are staring and judging me when I'm on my scooter because I'm not the typical elderly person. You have taught me that it doesn't matter what people think and that I need to get out there and live life because the life has been moving along without me. I hope soon I can get to the positive attitude that you have. You are such a bright star is this dark world and I'm so proud of you and I know your family is too.

Hi I also have Degenerative disc disease in my spine. Had my first fusion at 24yrs.. then an artificial titanium disc at about 29yrs. Those were both in my neck. Then I had surgery on my lower back L5/S1 in my 30's. That one wasn't successful and I now have almost constant back pain and I have Neuropathy in my feet now as well. I had to buy a wheelchair a few years ago. I was always so conscious of people watching me in the beginning. I'm turning 51 tomorrow. I'm finally starting to not care what people think. It makes such a difference. I have so much respect for Makayla and others who just get on with things. Hope I made sense. Strength to all.

I can relate! I’m 18, have a herniated disc and was recently diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. The pain has recently gotten a lot worse to the point where it hurts to sit, stand or walk for an extended period of time without being in a lot pain. I got an epidural but it hasn’t helped me at all. I’m going on a trip in a couple of days that requires lots of walking and I finally admitted to myself that I need a mobility aid. I was discouraged at first because I’m nervous of what people might think of me considering I’m so young and have an invisible disability, but you’re totally right! It doesn’t matter what people think and honestly I don’t think they really care. We should be able to enjoy our lives without worrying what others think about us. I discovered Makayla recently and she’s helped me out a lot!

Makayla don’t be hard on yourself - JUST the fact your trying out says so much! If people say mean things IGNORE them - It’s their issue not yours 📣
@Skatejock21
@Skatejock21 2 жыл бұрын
thats not realistic though to ignore. We dont usually ignore, we learn to tolerate. Tolerating can be more important to learn. An able bodied person can have mean things said to them too. Some jobs get mean things told to them daily and you dont ignore it. You cant ignore it, you learn to deal with it. You learn to read people and sometimes ignoring people... actually makes the situation worse! When you ignore people, even if its mean. Its not always their issue. Sometimes you dont and wont know what the issue is. Sometimes it has nothing to do with them either but you cant assume you know why they say mean things. We all say mean things, lets be honest about that. In a perfect world you wouldn't see mean people.

im a dance teacher and plan on showing this to my students. I wish they had even half the drive and passion you do. To have the injuries you do and still say "no excuses" is inspiring. I understand your frustration with you body not allowing you to be as sharp as you want but I could clearly see a difference in your technique from the start to the end of the video. Give yourself some grace. I know that's easier said than done but you should be so proud of yourself and what your body is able to do. You are a miracle and I'm so happy you get to be back out on the field with your friends doing what you love. You more than earned your spot there. I found it by chance about three months back and watching you struggle coming home from the hospital. I remembered what it was like. I encourage you to be your best self and keep doing what you’re doing. My children went through all their life with me being in a wheelchair and being a para. Your faith will also see you through the tough times, God never leaves our side. Congratulations on getting on the cheer team, this is what you need to keep u motivated. To be honest even though you can‘t do every motion anymore, you do it better than most people! Cheerleading isn‘t just about hitting your motions perfectly but it‘s all about the right spirit and you DEFINITELY still have it! This makes everyone forget about you not tumbling and instead doing a motion or you not being able to clap perfectly. Especially for highschool cheerleading, people focus way more on your spirit and probably most of the people in the crowd won‘t even see what‘s wrong about your motion. Keep up that great spirit and you‘ll keep being a great cheerleader 😘

There is just one word to describe you, it is "Courageous". Now I don't know anything about cheer, but it's very apparent you were born to be one. You are an inspiration to anyone who has any obstacles preventing them from pursuing their dream! Positive wishes being sent your way!!

Makayla I am so proud of you!! As a dancer I can see how much effort, willpower and determination you have and those are amazing qualities. You're doing incredibly and you should be so proud of yourself because you are doing so many things that push you out of your comfort zone which will only make you stronger. We're with you all the way!

I’m a dancer, I had a brain tumour, was was dancing 12 weeks after surgery, even when I was told I was probably not going to walk again. But my determination like yours, made it easy, but it was super hard, because of the brain stimulation. You are a true inspiration girl. Sending love from AUS.

Such an inspiration, doing something you love even if your struggling and it’s hard is a very strong thing to be able to do. I loved doing cheer but I never did any competitions because of my stage fright fear. It really is so inspirational how you are handling this situation especially at such a young age . ❤️

9:30 it's ok! It's like singing for too long, you might need a little warmup, and in the beginning you do the best, but after a while your voice gets like, dry and numb, and it feels like you "should" be able to do as good as you possibly can, but your body wont allow it. And it's ok! It's something you love, you just need to give yourself a little break inbetween your practices.

You will do great!!! You are making others so proud in your community besides yourself to prove a disability doesn’t mean you can do anything you set your mind too!

You are such an inspiration! As someone who has disabilities myself, I think it is so important to focus on what you do have instead of what you don’t. Not only are we fortunate enough to have those things but we also need to cherish those things. We all only have one live and things may not go our way but you are here for a reason. God gave us our lives for a reason.

The thing I use to help myself when I’m struggling doing the things that used to be easy for it me is to remind myself why I’m doing it. Like for rowing I think about how it’s somthing I love, being outside and in that community, so instead of focusing on being frustrated I focus on all my friends cheering me on. Your so strong, don’t know much about cheer but I think you looked great!
