15 years ago I had to pay a laser cut service for architectural models at my university. It was very expensive and we only used it for stuff that could not be cut by hand, mostly because of the detail. Every model did cost something in the realm of 300-500 bugs- so it is very interesting to see how "approachable" laser cutting has become.

Looks really good. Software is always the weak spot with stuff like this but even though it's clearly far from perfect it looks like they packed a lot of features in there. That radio body is probably ABS, by the way, in case they have a setting for that. Probably not an ideal material for lasering since it's quite melty and gummy.
@RNMSC2 ай бұрын
I'm not absolutely certain, but most of those black radio housings are injection molded ABS. You could check with some acetone, I'd advise doing that on a part of the radio that no one sees, but that's up to you. (An alternative to ABS for this is ASA.) Regardless, ABS is going to release some gasses you don't want to inhale, so generally venting outside is good, and for those who can't (classrooms for example) you really do want the filter. Note that this is a good laser for cutting acrylic for building better looking cyberdecks.

Cal-gone (hexa-something) is still used in boilers to keep the "stuff" (scale) in water from dropping out. It does mix with antifreeze solutions. Your water might absorb atmospheric CO² over time. Who knows about gas permeability of plastics?

Very Nice laser. Although, you need a business requiring the laser or a very rich uncle to essentially pay for it. Now that you have it, I think cutting out all the parts for a RC sailplane needs to be on the list of future projects or perhaps the parts for a mechanical clock. Otherwise an endgoal that is well beyond a demonstration.

Hey mate, hit me up if you have any specific questions about the laser, been running a 3000kw one for the past year and a half, mostly self taught cus shitty company. Theyre actually really well made, you can crash em without causing too much damage. Gantry is loose like that so impacts dont kill it. Just re-home it and check the head, and you should be good! Mine had a capacitance sensor so it would detect what was directly underneath and cut at the preset height, but even with that you can still crash the hell out of it, so setting up your toolpath and doing dry runs does help alot. Any deviation to the quality of your cut should be direct relation to whatever setting you input, or any spots on the protective lens, even crud stuck in the head. Ive found even a thin layer of oil on metal is enough to change your cut quality by quite a bit. Sometimes you get the machine and the layer settings they give you are bad, so you always gotta mess around with it to get familiar with what settings do what.

What's with the coconut oil? Also, the software problems are kinda on them. A lot of work bench/garage computers are going to be old beaters and aside from calculations the software makes, it's not doing anything that should need a ton of CPU time just displaying the UI. It's just inefficient and that needs improvement.

It's kind of weird companies make these great tools and then let the software be janky. It could and should be such a smooth experience for that price.
I was using one by a company called Trotec. It was awful. It didn't vent right so it stunk like heck whenever you were cutting or engraving anything. What was worse is they had no positive air charge on the reflectors. So your mirrors would get all dirty during operation. I replumbed it for air and blocked off some of that ridiculous amount of holes for ventilation. They just perforated the whole bottom so here was no plenum for the air to ride on. Make up air has to come in over the work from the front.

The store metal blackener for letters/etching/recesses and whatnot isn't for stainless. Think about german silver (cupro-nickel). Copper alloys are easy to with the selenium dioxide type blackener. I used to burn sulfur over sterling silver for etched things too. Polish off the excess. The laser should be able to cook some metals sufficiently to get every color of the rainbow plus black (there is a yt vid).
