When I was 4, I had a best friend who lived down the street. She had one of those big, cheap tins with lots of watercolors (1950’s). We would go to her room and mix those paints for hours. Every time we had some weird gray mixture, we would intone, “Ah, the final touch!” and mix a bunch of some new color in. We never actually painted, but just spent hours mixing colors, which fascinated our 4-year-old selves. That’s how I learned how to mix colors.

Beautiful! I've been thinking about the idea of being inspired by the colours on your palette lately. I've avoided my watercolours for a long time. I told myself that it was because I hadn't learned how to use them yet, but then I randomly bought a hot pink and suddenly fell in love with just playing. A few more "just cuz they're pretty" colours later and I'm playing with my watercoulours all the time and realizing that I hate the "recommended" palette I've been avoiding for nearly 5 years. I think you need a balance of colours you love and useful colours, but I'm having so much more fun with watercolours now that I'm starting with fun colours and slowly (very slowly) figuring out what colours I can add to get a good mix of colours for the type of paintings I'm currently enjoying. Speaking of gorgeous colours, that helio turquoise is on my wish list! And, yes, please do the direct comparison!

Oh, I can absolutely relate to the feeling of getting new colours and just LOVING them, it's the best! As much as I love creating polished finished work, I also just absolutely adore colour mixing and seeing what happens, it's the most fun and just makes me so happy... It doesn't remind me of a date (I've never really dated much) so much as when I was a kid in the 90s getting a new playset for xmas, like a Lego castle or a Little Pet Shop and taking them out of the packaging and starting to make up stories about them.... that's a lot what getting new colours feels like. 🤩 This palette absolutely suits your style and I can see why'd you be in love with it so fast! Gosh those neutrals are so pleasant!!

I definitely want to see a video of both sets of guaches used together. As for replicating your current W&N colors in the Schminke for comparison, I personally would be more interested in something like a set that rounds out the Schminke ones you have to something like a set of warm/cool set of primaries that fit your style, plus maybe 2 more. Perhaps a maximum of about eight would really illustrate how much you (that is to say one) can do with that limited set in a good brand.

The good and the bad of Schmincke, They make wonderful products! They cost a LOT! High quality is expensive, that is just the way it is. Since this is from 2 years ago I assume you did buy more and decided that you would spend your money elsewhere? I am struggling with even the question do I need to go back down that rabbit hole ? Do I need any gouache paints at all?? I have plenty of watercolors and I am trying to get all of them into working palettes. I know that some like to work from tubes, but I just prefer to let them dry out! This is another question for the use of gouache. I learned to use paint from tubes, do I really want to learn how to again? Or paint gouache from dried pans? Gahhh! I should just go to bed! Thanks for sharing and leaving this video for all of us to watch. I will need to look for a follow-up video? G'Night Sarah.

Paused early to like for Floki 💙 Thank you so much for this! I've been curious about Schmincke gouache for some time now, but I haven't needed to replace my Holbein just yet. Our color choices would be similar (I need my cool red), so this is *super* helpful. Delft blue is Schmincke's indanthrone blue (PB60), which is one of my essentials. I would love to see comparisons between your brands and also how well it dries and reconstitutes in your new palette, if it's not too much trouble. Also, I went to Sligachan in October of 2019 and your videos/paintings from there just.. *chef's kiss.*

delft blue (sometimes called danish or dutch blue) was created by calcinating cobalt ore with quartz sand and potash- an extremely expensive process for artisans of the time. using paint grinding windmills, dutch artists would create the paint to decorate various porcelain vessels used for tableware. Delft Blue earthenware has been produced in the city of Delft since the 17th century. Between 1600 and 1800. Lovely color
