I'm an American Sri Lankan. You are right when you said that Sri Lankan food is healthy with a little rice. All Sri Lankan foods are cooked with healthy species that comes from trees. Even though we get everything in the US to prepare Sri Lankan food it's not the original taste as when you prepare it in Sri Lanka. Enjoy your stay.

Sri Lankan American here. The restaurant you went was a pretty high end, so the prices are above average. Try a local roadside local restaurant, most likely has a sign that says some "Hotel", but actually is a food joint. Cost probably be less than half of what you paid. They all serve mainly rice and curry, and many snacks like samosa which are called "short eats". Short eats are usually paired with Ketchup, that's why you were served ketchup. Sri Lankans are rather fond of Ketchup and usually every table has its own bottle. It is so widely used, and many people just call it "Sauce". Most famous street food would be undeniably the "Kottu Roti", and it is everywhere. A must try. Sri Lankans do not use diary when cooking (milk/yogurt etc.). They use freshly squeezed coconut milk which gives that rich creamy flavor and the vibrant taste. Hope this helps!

6:05 - Dhal Curry 6:07 - Potato Curry with coconut Milk 6:10 - Pickle Dish 6:16 - Gotukola Sambol is a traditional Sri Lankan side dish that’s a bit like a fresh herb salad, but it’s uniquely flavoured with tropical ingredients. The main ingredient is gotukola, a leafy green herb similar in texture to parsley or watercress, which is finely chopped and mixed with freshly grated coconut, onions, green chillies, and lime juice. It’s often enhanced with a touch of Maldive fish, a dried fish condiment, for extra savoury depth, though this can be left out. It’s light, zesty, and full of nutrients, typically served as a refreshing accompaniment to rice and curry.

Hi dear Sir . A small advice. Try to use your Right hand when eating to mix the curries and everything with rice. It will make the food so delicious. Srilankan foods are ment to eat by mixing with each others with your hand . So try it once . It's not that hard. And thanx for the lovely video. Welcome to Sri Lanka.

Fantastic video! If you're trying Sri Lankan rice and curry, traditionally, we eat it with our hands. It's a unique experience that adds to the authenticity and enjoyment of the meal. Here's a quick guide: 1. **Mix it Up**: Take a small portion of rice and mix it with a little bit of each curry and side dish. 2. **Form a Ball**: Using your fingers, form the mixture into a small ball. 3. **Scoop and Eat**: Use your thumb to push the rice and curry ball into your mouth. This method allows you to fully appreciate the different textures and flavors as they blend together. Enjoy your Sri Lankan culinary adventure! Take Care

So next thing you gotta try is Koththu Roti. It comes in various flavours, chicken Koththu, egg Koththu, dolphin Koththu (no actual dolphins btw XD), cheese Koththu etc. Also, do a comparison of the local Beer (Lion Beer) and Calsberg. Btw, when we Sri Lankans typically eat rice, we serve a generous portion of rice and serve small amounts of the curries around the plate. So you generally have to mix everything together and then eat it. That way you feel all those flavours together.
