The "salt coating" is ammonium chloride = salmiak. So it's not table salt (which we call natriumklorid).

Everyone gets really confused about the ingredients in the "chocolateball". It´s not nuts. The base of the ball is actually oats. Home made versions of these are really popular and easy to make. Kid friendly since the are a "non bake"....

@@ratsciencegames6204 What is this! Half a dl of vanillasugar! This is not the traditional recipe found in the holy dessert and cookie book of "7 sorters kakor" (7 kinds of cookies). The traditional recipe is: 100g butter 1dl granulated sugar 3 tblsp cocoa powder 1 tblsp cold coffee (ideally strongly brewed) 1 tsp vanillasugar 3dl oats Garnish: Either coconut flakes or pearl sugar Mix until well combined. Some thoughts as a Swede: 1) Trocadero is described as a "fruit champagne fizzy drink" here in Sweden. We've other similar brands but Trocadero is the most iconic. The most popular fizzy drink in Northern Sweden. 2) Delicato is the brand name and the pastry is called chocolate ball (chokladboll). But the brand has become so much associated with the pastry that is referred to as a "Delicatoboll". 3) Djungelvrål (Jungle Roars) is definitely an acquired taste and might be one of those foods/sweets you have to be exposed early on to as a kid (Swede eat a lot of liquorice), to enjoy. Personally I do enjoy them but only in small amounts. Very good accompanied with a glass of milk, like most salty liquorice.

That your tongues might not have experienced it before is because the salt covering isn't the normal "table" salt, ie sodium chloride, but salmiak (from Sal ammonia, salt of mmonia), ie ammonium chloride (made by reacting ammonia and hydrochloric acid)

Other uses: smoke in pyro effects (heated it breaks down to ammonia and hydrochloric acid. As the vapors cool down they recombine into very small white particles of salmiak suspended in the air. (Probably not too fun to inhale...) As flux in soldering. A component in the glue commonly used in plywood. In some cough syrups.

Tutti-frutti is as you noticed, only one haste, but its a taste of several fruits combined. Not uncommon in Swedish snacks to combine different flavours to a New unique one. It's the same with Trocadero, it doesn't haste of apples and oranges, it tastes trocadero. Wether one like tutti-frutti flavoured things is of course a personal thing.

In Sweden there are two major producers of crisps/chips, and as it tends to happen where there are two, people are divided into "haters", "lovers" with a majority of "mehshruggers", (ie sensible people who doesn't mind either). Personally, when I intentionally bought "same falvour" chips from both to make a comparison, I found that I have a surprisingly strong preference for the chips from the other producer, the one not featured here. While their Cheezdoodles (OWL's) are quite nice, and I eat their Cheezballs with my entire hand, not just my fingers, I have come to love the lentil based ones, but again from the other producer. So I must confess, that I am not a "mehshrugger" when it comes to the choice of chips/crisps and similar snacks from these two producers.

They *are* different though, which is very evident if you just *taste* and compare them... especially so between the very minty white and the totally non minty red. I have actually seen a couple of blind tests on this (as some people do have weak taste buds/smell and argue they must be the same). One with my friends in the 1990s, where two people out of three were 100% correct. Just one miss (white/green) out of 9+9+9 trials, as I remember it. Another blindfold test was on TV5 with Josefine Crafoord. She also got it 100% correct, although on fewer trials than we did.

Hi Maverick Baking ! Salt licorice contains about 70 grams of ammonia per kilogram. According to an EU proposal presented in the spring of 2012, the maximum limit for salmiak in food would be lowered to 3 grams per kilo, which would mean a ban on salt licorice. Food companies, confectionery manufacturers and industry organizations in the Nordic countries have protested against the proposal and in the autumn of 2012 an exception was introduced for salt licorice. Salt licorice will therefore be allowed to remain. Wikipedia. There are studies in animals that show that the substance glycyrrhizinic acid found in licorice can have anticarcinogenic effects, ie cancer prevention properties. According to many connoisseurs, the world's best licorice comes from Calabria in Italy. Sincerely T.
