This is why I love this channel because he is giving exposure to the little guy, the family restaurant food business. And it's a big help to all the entrepreneur who may not have the big money for advertising but channels like La try guy is showing them that their hard work is not going unnoticed. As a east coast guy from Philly, I have more understanding and love for LA by watching this show and other places he travels to for food reviews. Pioneer Chicken was the BEST fast food chicken!!! I grew up on this & have missed it ever since they closed. I still think of it & crave it on a regular basis to this day. I WISH they’d open more locations. Nobody has breading like theirs. It’s amazing!

I remember Pioneer Chicken on Del Amo Blvd in Lakewood, CA. Went there a couple times when we were teens in the late 80s with my parents and sibs. I still remember the crunchy, greasy chicken! A little salty and made you want to drink a huge soda. And to think, we ate that fried food and soda, and we weren’t fat like people are now!

I have loved Pioneer Chicken for over 50 years. The only chicken that was better was the old Golden Bird which has been gone for almost 15 years. I grew up eating gizzards from the age of 6 or 7, and am now 83 years old and still love gizzards. Will have to make another trip up to East L.A. to get some more of that delicious Pioneer Chicken as it has been two years since I went there.

It was a sad, SAD day when I learned my location, on the corner of Niagra and Mission (San Francisco), closed in the late 1990's. I don't care what people say about Nor-Cal or whatever rivalry there is between Nor-Cal and So. Cal. Maybe the rivalry is in sports... but this isn't sports. This is food. GOOD FOOD. And good food brings people together! I hope Ernie sees this comment and considers expanding Pioneer Chicken's influence northwards, not just to my hometown of SF, but to the rest of this great state. Current and future generations don't know what they're missing out on! In the time Pioneer closed in SF, I grew up on KFC, was introduced to Popeyes, tried Church's, and grew on Jollibee. I graduated from Dorsey High School closer to La Brea but not far from Rodeo and Crenshaw where Pioneer was. By the way Rodeo is now called Obama. They should have talked about the history of Pioneer Chicken. These guys weren't even around when there was the one in Echo Park, where there was only free-standing ordering and a few tables for outside eating. There was Pioneer Market as well, which was always open regardless of earthquakes, oil embargos, storms,...etc.

Pioneer is the OG of fried chicken! My fam and I would buy buckets of pioneer chicken for cookouts, holidays, picnics, etc. you name it, pioneer was there! And their mashed potato and gravy was the best! They used real potatoes! Imagine that. The last one near me was the one on Fountain in LA. I was driving home from Fontana last night, and I said, I had to go to Pioneer Chicken and get some dinner. So I drove to the Boyle Heights location. Had my own combo four pieces, legs and thighs. Also tried the chicken strips and a side of onion rings. That chicken was outstanding. You nailed it with this one. Have to say the chicken strips are absolutely the best I’ve ever had.
