It has to be said that the background paintings of Ghibli movies aren't made with watercolors, but with postercolors (more like gouache).
@ethonica
@ethonica 9 ай бұрын
Yes, they normally use Nicker poster colors in painting their Ghibli films. But when Studio Ghibli goes out to research about areas in Japan they will use as inspiration for their films, Hayao Miyazaki uses watercolors. They would paint the location plein air. He used the tools in this set with some slight variations (like certain colors that used to be in this set have been discontinued and were replaced with similar colors.)

Thanks for the video ❤❤❤ and actually showing a painting, that is the real way to see how watercolors perform, not only swatching them as a lot of videos do.

Sweetheart, there's nothing "basic" about finding Miyazaki's work inspiring. He's a treasure of Japan for a reason.

That pencil shaving tho! Incredibly good quality sharpener and pencil wood to make that! And yes, I know, I know, out of everything in the video to have stuck out at me, it just HAD to be the pencil shaving. I know it's weird.🤣🤣

Although we do different styles of art I greatly appreciate what you've done here. I've had a curiosity about the Holbein watercolors but I very much love the way that some of the American watercolors behave. I don't know what the debate is about prussian blue, I just know that I love prussian blue as well as viridian and alizarin crimson. Although I'm very aware that alizarin crimson is fugitive there are permanent versions although I see a difference in the color.

Thanks for providing the list of colours. Holbein is relatively cheap in Australia so I own quite a few. But this has me curious what these colours would be like in gouache which holbein also make and are relatively cheap in Australia too. Hmmm

I watched a documentary about Miyazaki and he showed his watercolor palette. It was the Holbein 26 well aluminum palette, though he clearly said it was 24 colors which confused me. They sell cheap knockoffs (and the crazily priced originals) on Amazon. I use and love them. The 26 well comes in two sizes and the larger one (the dupe of Miyazaki's) is like the perfect studio palette IMO. I see you're not looking to buy, but prior to the opening of the Ghibli museum that set you have was not available and I spent a long time researching to recreate his palette. So, I had to take the opportunity to share. Funny little thing he said that starting with that palette filled was "enough for one movie" . Lol
