I've only been painting with watercolors for about 2 months now and early on I saw a professional artist paint with gansai paints and I loved it and thought I would try it, and they basically inferred that they were the same thing as watercolor. I found out quickly that they were not the same. I was discouraged because I thought that I was doing something wrong. Thank you so much for this video and I would love to see you make more videos about different types of art supplies and paints

Yes I agree. Care about each other and create a safe space for all who may need it because of who they are, what they profess as a stance in their lives (not hate-filled lives), the circumstances of their birth and more. And yes those who voted for hate, and heartbreak, violence and quite probably death(s), as well, need not apply for this safety.

I don't have space for that stuff no more and I've straight up said it elsewhere. I got both my eyes on protecting myself and I don't have one to spare behind me for "allies" that need to babied in order to be allies. Stay strong. Circle your wagons and weather it. Keep finding your salvage and your inspiration. Do your art and live.

how lovely to see your big palette! i love having lots of colors too. also i got the same feeling about Daniel smith, i have their french ultramarine and somehow that paint will dry and flake off (such a weird thing to say xD) if i use it on yupo paper. and when i ask them about it, it felt like they were just explaining what yupo paper is to me instead of being helpful... 😅but i loved your video, so calm and interesting. oh and i love mixing dioxaxine purple with perylene green for a moody blueish black 🖤

13:53 is it pv55? I believe I have quiacridone purple by Daniel smith and it’s made with that pigment if I’m not mistaken! I agree it’s so interesting because of its warmer mass tone and cooler undertones and for some reason people never mention that about it 😭
@madden.r.grimes29 күн бұрын
The brands website says its pv19 and pv29 Which is an odd combination (to me) But my tube is reeeeaaly old so it might be a different pigment

What evidence or reasoning do you have for questioning the Primatek colours?
@madden.r.grimes29 күн бұрын
Well, i used to just accept them at face value, but i used to follow a pigment nerd on Instagram (ages and ages ago, don't remember the handle) and they had some doubts, checked them under a microscope, reached out to Daniel Smith, etc. But that really just made me think about it for the first time, the clincher for me is that if you paint a layer of Daniel Smith amethyst its the color of amethyst, and according to them the only pigment in it is amethyst, but if you cut a slice of amethyst as thin as a layer of watercolor paint it would be clear. If you can see through a crystal it isn't pigmented enough to produce meaningful color on paper, and it certainly wouldn't be the same shade as a big chunk of crystal. There are other reasons, but this is the easiest to explain in a comment
@karenirving708829 күн бұрын
@ interesting my son is a geologist so I'm going to ask him over dinner tonight 🤣I've heard similar. I don't like Schminke because I think their super granulating paints are overpriced novelty
@annika887729 күн бұрын
Some time ago I was trying to find more information about this topic and it seems that it has to be assumed that the Primatek colors are "enhanced" by common pigments (e.g. PG7 in Amazonite and Jadeite Gen., PV23/PV37 in Amethyst Gen., PB28 in Sleeping Beauty Turquoise ..). This explains why the colors are so strong even though the natural minerals don't show such strong colors when ground as fine particles. There is an official statement of John Cogley (Daniel Smith CEO), where he states that all Primatek colors contain genuine minerals but are "altered" for consistency in a secret way. Since there are no pigments listed on the tube, no one really knows which common pigments (much cheaper than the genuine minerals) could be added and to which extent. "There are some colors that, in our manufacturing process, are altered to assure the paint color is exactly as the tube before it. Not all mineral paint would be consistent without this step. Minerals are NOT consistent, it is their nature. This is a manufacturing process that is private and will not be shared. It DOES NOT take away that every single color is made with real mineral."
@karenirving708829 күн бұрын
@ interesting. It does make me wonder what the role of the mineral actually is in the paint. May try grinding up a few crystals and see what results from home made watercolour.
@annika887729 күн бұрын
@@karenirving7088would be really interesting to hear about your results! I think part of the Primatek controversy is that at least for some colors the labeling seems more like a marketing strategy. If they would put something like "inspired by..." and "made with..." on their colors it would seems less misleading. But as a scientist myself I am really curious if we can get more information on that from people who have the possibility to further analyze the components of these colors.

If you REALLY want to gets more colors and more pans inot that palette box, take all of the pans out of the included inner tray, put adhesive magnets on the backs of them (i got a roll from dollar tree) and you can nearly double the pan capacity if you do it right :-) I have gotten currently 66 half pans into the larger size palette you have there and 24 half pans into the smaller sized one just to say how much they CAN hold if you really want them too ! I am a total fellow color collector, I just cant have enough :-) Happy Painting !!
@madden.r.grimes29 күн бұрын
I keep thinking about it, but i love the perfect lines of the metal clips :') I'm just annoyed that i got one where the center gap isn't big enough to sneak in an extra row
@pantalonious398428 күн бұрын
@@madden.r.grimes I totally understand wanting the clean look. I absolutely agree so I aligned them all in perfect rows of 11, there are 6 rows so 66 total. It still looks really clean and organized and aesthetically pleasing. It’s also of course fantastic to have so many colors at hand all the time, this way I know I will either already have or quickly be able to mix whatever color I need pretty easily. I also like to keep a little 2-3ml plastic paint pots with lids filled with white gouache and a deep rich black, usually a heavy granulating one. I feel it is defenitly worth the little bit of effort to put the magnets on the bottoms of the pans and arrange them neatly. They stay in place really well . Give it a try :-)

I don't use the whole palette in each painting, I'm not super strict, especially when going for more realistic colors, but i generally plan out what colors I'm going to use, and try to mix from that smaller pool, usually around five colors. Another good tip is an underpainting, it centers the color palette for the whole painting with minimal effort

Thank you. Great information. Your painting is lovely. Your voice with the soft background music is perfect. I’m looking for a medium to use for painting on fabric in a “watercolour - like effect” so very interested in these paint sets. I’m hoping the different characteristics will enable me to use them on an uncommon surface like fabric. Your information on how they don’t bleed and repel actually was super beneficial to me as fabric absorbs water and paint spreads differently than on quality artist paper…like it runs along the threads or puddles into a muddy mess! I really appreciated the information on colour fastness. The best video I’ve seen on that. Thank you for sharing your observations, opinions and art. Enjoy your art time. Hello from 🇨🇦
