Hi, in this 'trying to fix' video I attempt to fix a PS3. I bought 3 faulty PS3 consoles from the one seller on eBay for £28 ($36.58, €32.28) so it works out less than £10 each. This is the video of the 3rd fix, please see my KZbin channel for Part 1 and 2. This was filmed a couple of months ago straight after the Part 2 video.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

In regards to the thermal paste you should put a larger blob in the middle instead of alot of small scattered blobs because this will trap air in between the heat sink and chip, a bigger blob in the middle will spread from the inside out and push any air out with it :) there is always diagrams Available on how to apply the paste to specific chips online, just google it :) great video btw.

The board probably isn't shorted, those caps around the CPU and GPU are VERY low resistance, so the multimeter consider those as "shorted", but actually they're not. The only way to check those little caps for shorts is removing the CPU and GPU off the board, then the resistance goes back to "normal". Also, the error you have here is indeed YLOD, which is "general hardware failure" and can be A LOT of things, but mostly it is BGA Solder related on the CPU or GPU. Another tip, these Fat PS3 have a chronically problem with those NEC SuperCapacitors, those thin retangular black chips on top and bottom of the board. They loose capacitance over time, and give the YLOD error after it. The fix is to solder additional capacitors on the same rail as the CPU and GPU voltage line, so the voltage doesn't drop and cause system shutdown.

CECHG models of the PlayStation are typically known for faults with their Blu-Ray drives. If the CECHC model worked, you could test the CECHG Blu Ray drive on it to see if it's worth going about purchasing another CECHG with a faulty drive to at least get something out of this system, otherwise, yeah that system has seen better days. Previous owner had left in their basement, shed, or even outside which caused all of the rust and chalky film.

I got 5 Xbox 360s buy it now for £22 free post and 3 worked out the box ,1 had needed a little rubber band for the tray and the other was rrod so it donanted it's rubber band to the working xbox and a pink PS2 slim that apparently didn't read discs but I got it for £10.10 auction and it intact works perfectly. It's a gamble because you're banking on the seller being honest but even then they can't always be fixed.

It's a shame, but I would have come to the same conclusion. It's worth perhaps one day considering getting it reballed (perhaps when they go up in value due to the low numbers of working ones in circulation). You may be able to get it working (for a period of time) by doing a reflow, but often the bad connections just break again. Fun to watch though! =D

Yeah, I have heard that they don't last very long unless you hack them and then can keep the temperature of the chips down. I have a PS3 slim which may not look as nice but works perfectly so this was purely for the 'fix it' feeling. Out of all of them it would be the 2nd one that I would like working, the backwards compatible one. To me the difference in quality between this one and the backwards compatible one in part 2 is night and day. This one looked very cheap. Cheers for the comment :-)

@Tylerjrb
@Tylerjrb 5 жыл бұрын
Could be a varying amount of things. Sure a reball could fix it and you can do it with cheap tools. Just need a decent size heat gun + mount + large enough square nozzle to heat the entire chip. But as you probably know a reball is not always the answer. One of the chips could be internally shorted or on its way out. You could do it with your heat gun. Put entire board in oven at 100-150c then hit the chips with the biggest nozzle you have. Could also be anything on the vrm power side. Shorted cap/mosfet etc. Best way to find out would be to remove the 4 coils to seperate. Great video as always vince. Shame you did not fix but worth it for the knowledge i think.

Tyler he can use them for another ps3. You can fix them pretty easily! He has since made videos fixing them by replacing nec tokin capacitors on top of board near gpu and cpu. Reflowing and Reballing worked, but not for the reasons that was believed,which was the Lead-Free Solder causing the issue, the PlayStation3 with the Syscon fan usually has a max tolerance temperature around 75/78ºC at almost Stage 4 Fan Speed "more on the later models", and a Thermal Protection at 90ºCs, the problem is that in order for the Lead-Free Solder to crack or dislodge from the board on average you need 217ºC to get the chip off the board, the PlayStation3 inside, its almost at 75ºC to 80ºCs at the most, which is 138ºCs less than what you need in order to damage the solder-balls, Sony used the same Lead-Free aloy in all Generations of the PlayStation3, yet only the Revisions that are known for this kind of failure its the CECHA all the way to the CECH-2000 Slim Model, and why dont any other revision from CECH-2100 and upwards get the YLOD, if the same Lead-Free aloy is used? Did Sony removed the "feature? Its because of the newer Chipset Manufacture Process "Nm"? Is because the newer consoles heat less than they´re predecessors? The answer its neither of them, the Lead-Free Solder, the Overheating or Newer Manufacture Process,but rather a few SMD Capacitors manufactured by NEC "Formerly known as "NEC/TOKIN", which are responsible for the YLOD issue caused by the early PlayStation3 revisions.

CECHG models are in my opinion the worst PS3 model - no backward compatibility, an ineffective 15 blade fan and gpu and cpu chips that become too hot because of the fan, dust build-up and poor quality thermal paste. But at least you gave a good video and can possibly use some of the parts ie the hard drive or using the dvd drive by switching it and swapping the dvd drive board around so they match.

WindsSunrise1 no 90% of the time it’s just those Nec Tokin capacitors near the gpu and cpu. They where flawed and known to loose capacitance over time. When even one of them starts to fail it can cause insufficient power supply to those chips which causes the general hardware failure known as YLOD.

Nobody like me it’s the nec tokin capacitor chips on the circuit board closest to the gpu and cpu. They where found to be faulty and loose their capacity after regular use. Easy fix is to replace the nec tokin caps with 470uf solid SMD tantalum capacitors. You need 4 solder in place per chip. Go look it up. There have been plenty of videos made proving this.

I'd say that adding washers only makes it worse because it bends the mainboard and cracks the connections. Just reflow and if it works at all you will know it needs a reball. If it doesnt work, either you have a bad chip, shorted mosfet or capacitor. NSC has alot of videos on this matter.

The silver solder on those surface mounted I.C. are the worse. It doesn't have a good eutectic state which is why it's prone to cracking over heating and cooling cycles. I tried my hand at reballing and it requires too much work and care. Alibaba sales pre-balled GPUs and CPUs for the PS3 for a decent price. Just long wait for delivery. Makes for good practice if you ever want to try your hand at replacing those items.

I will put the bracket without heatsing, using small piece of metal on the other side. This will put pressure on the cpu and retain it on its place. Then hit the metal piece with a heat gun. You can put the temperature probe of you DMM on the actual metal piece that is against the chip to read the actual temperature. You can even recreate the profile for reflow this way (sort of) using the temp regulator of the heatgun. It is a ghetto fix, but nothing like playing with stuff that cant get worse. Worths the test, just for curiosity.

Nice video, i love the gaming repares :) Yes it went to yellow 😁 its an YLOD. One of the chips is desoldered from platin. Most times it is the cell rsx or north bridge chip (the black big chip) in some few cases its a failed psu that not delivers enough power and the ps3 flashes. Yellow light followd by red blinking just means fatal system error. Overheating isn't possible after 2 seconds I guess. But one is safe, if it isnt the psu, to repare isn't worth the time and afford.

Vince! Don't get discouraged!! Don't assume that someone with any knowledge tried to fix something. I find that most of the time it's been done by kids and they just watch other kids do it on youtube and cross their fingers. Obviously they put no real care into it if they didn't remove the corrosion or replace the thermal paste. When I open something that someone else has worked on and failed to fix, I assume they just weren't as good as me! You should do the same! You put a lot of time and care into your repairs! As for the warranty sticker, my guess is that they heated it up or something to remove it. Plus at 10 pounds, I doubt you could buy a spare power supply or Blu-Ray drive for that!! Try the PSX forums and replace the caps. There is a good tutorial but basically sony used cheap nec caps at the time and the cell cpu isnt't getting enough power. Once u do that will correct over 90% of the ps3 problems without doing any advanced damage to the board or cpu. Reflowing does help but it doesnt correct it. Cheap caps is more the problem caps only suppose to last if your lucky maybe 10 years. Its worth it and cheap will improve the reliabilty of the unit and it will last another 10 years. this 3rd console does what the second video's repair was about this one is unrepairable the second one WAS repairable if you get the 1 second yellow light the console is dead only a heat gun makes it work for a few hours or a few days but it will die and is only usable as a book stand

Sucks you found another dodgy seller well it seems that way. I've bought a few 'faulty untested' or disc read error consoles to find them working when I get them or it's a simple fix. I got 1 out of 5 360s that worked from a faulty lot and a pink PS2 that didn't read discs but really it did and still does lol. I think for me its the best and cheapest way to collect older systems.

@Club_Michas

@My Mate VINCE The only real fix is to replace the GPU , reflow and rebaling doesn't fix it permanently because the Core of the GPU has a bad connection to the GPU itself. If you heat the GPU Core at 120° the Solder won't melt but it will work for a couple days/month and will die again. everybody who claim that rebaling fix it forever telling you bullshit. You may ask why, the answer is that the GPUs manufactured by NVIDIA and AMD in 2006 - 2008 had a big design flaw.

That’s sad someone tried to fix it did a piss poor job at it failed didn’t even care to put it back together properly missing screws looks like it got moisture inside it with all the rust I saw. Then gets a fake warranty sticker slaps it on to sell it. So people buying will think it’s never been opened shifty and I do t like it.

The Problem Is YLOD which mean overheating, Or Broken Parts. And The PS3 Needs At Least 500 GB Of Storage.

MyRegardsToTheDodo Reflowing and Reballing worked, but not for the reasons that was believed,which was the Lead-Free Solder causing the issue, the PlayStation3 with the Syscon fan usually has a max tolerance temperature around 75/78ºC at almost Stage 4 Fan Speed "more on the later models", and a Thermal Protection at 90ºCs, the problem is that in order for the Lead-Free Solder to crack or dislodge from the board on average you need 217ºC to get the chip off the board, the PlayStation3 inside, its almost at 75ºC to 80ºCs at the most, which is 138ºCs less than what you need in order to damage the solder-balls, Sony used the same Lead-Free aloy in all Generations of the PlayStation3, yet only the Revisions that are known for this kind of failure its the CECHA all the way to the CECH-2000 Slim Model, and why dont any other revision from CECH-2100 and upwards get the YLOD, if the same Lead-Free aloy is used? Did Sony removed the "feature? Its because of the newer Chipset Manufacture Process "Nm"? Is because the newer consoles heat less than they´re predecessors? The answer its neither of them, the Lead-Free Solder, the Overheating or Newer Manufacture Process,but rather a few SMD Capacitors manufactured by NEC "Formerly known as "NEC/TOKIN", which are responsible for the YLOD issue caused by the early PlayStation3 revisions.

There is a way to fix it I fixed one before and the way you fix it is you get a heat gun and go over the two chips (cpu)&(GPU) then wait for it to cool DOWN! then take the heat shield off them apply thermal paste then put it back together and boom
