Hi, this 'trying to fix' video shows me attempting to repair a radio controlled toy helicopter which has no power, even though the battery is showing as charged.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

The thought crossed in my mind too :) There at least used to be keyring videocameras, which are small and lightweight & also has the orientation, that might work well with the helicopter model.

I have oft suspected we only get very narrow shots because either side of Mr V is walls from floor to ceiling of broken electronics, some have wondered with the rise of his channel, the reduction of e-waste in places like Taiwan etc have shown strong parity and they have posters on the factory walls saying "Don't throw the broken production items away... list it on ebay UK and in Mr Vince we trust." and little shrines etc

Just a bit of info. 8.4V would be fully charged. That "battery pack" is 2 x 18650 cells which put out 4.2v each on a full charge. commonly used in torches, Laptop battery packs and also they are used in many vaporisers too. Much more common batteries than most people think.

Just a friendly warning, whenever working on Quads or Helicopters, ALWAYS remove the props. Coming from building my own Quads for racing. You never know when the blades can go bat crazy. Always a great job though! Love the videos.

Nice one Vince! I love these. To make your life a bit easier, you should get some hook clips for your multimeter. Then you can hook them onto even tiny connectors, freeing up your hands for other tasks. I bought some for myself, and although the quality is a bit dodgy, they do the job quite well.

You should pick up a set of test leads from ebay or amazon. The nice ones have leads that can clip on to wires and connectors and allow you to piggyback a couple of sets of test leads. Nice sets are about $20USD. This would really assist in troubleshooting for instance clipping a ground lead on a chassis when checking capacitors.

MM Vince, I agree that a loose connection was always the probable fault. But, you might want to add an amperage check to your battery check routine. If the battery has a superficial charge (sometimes call battery memory) you'll get the correct voltage but an amperage check will tell a different story. If the battery isn't marked with the amperage rating then check the device's specifications for this info. BTW, your soldering is looking better. You were clearly heating both the wire and the board through-hole connections at the same time. Even your solder application was good (soldered from opposite side from heating). All in all, I am impressed. Keep up the good work, I'll keep watching. Thanks!

Hey, Vince, on ebay you can get specialized tools to unpin pretty much any kind of electrical connector. Just search for "Car Wire Harness Terminal Extraction Pick Connector Pin Remove Tool Set" or at least part of that. It should be rather intuitive which one you need to use and how. Btw, those connectors are a dime a dozen, used also for EL wires, for example... But i do enjoy going you through the steps until you figure it out and fix it.. :)

MMV, weren't you able to get your son involved in the diagnostic & repair process? That process & mindset is a valuable life skill you can impart to him that most teachers simply don't have in their curriculum & training to do. Sure, it would have taken longer to do and to shoot and edit the video for - but you'd be building up something that's generational and a lot more valuable than £30.

Nice copter. You should really change the connectors for deans (T plug)type. Can get them for about £3 for 10 sets (male/female). Most companies use the tamiya type as they are about 1p cheaper for manufacturing purposes but they have issues including wobbly connectors and creating resistance and you really dont want the chopper to fail when it is 50ft in the air. I play a lot of airsoft and any regular player will swap out the tamiya connectors for deans type as it improves the rate of fire and battery efficiency. You would get more flying time using deans. Maybe do a video on changing the connectors and maybe also giving the copter a service or to try and make it quieter. Maybe change the motors for brushless or something else. Pimp your chopper. :) Could also try the XT60 type connector as I believe they are superior to deans but more costly.

Now just hack the spring out of the main rotor control on the controller so it'll be easier to hold in a hover. For some reason they use that to safe it to off on the less expensive helicopters, but it makes them more annoying to fly. (Any moment of inattention to that has it dropping like a rock.)
