I would either install a used engine or keep this one for parts. Many years ago, about 50 to be exact, I was mowing lawns while in high school to make extra money. I had a mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine which I had used extensively. One day I was mowing a lawn and ran over a steel rod sticking out of the ground at about the mowing level. The crankshaft broke off, it was not just bent. Luckily, I had other usable mowers that people had given me, etc.

Sounds like my situation exactly except it was about 40 years ago. I was in high school mowing lawns to make extra money. I used my parents (under one year old) Craftsman mower to mow a gas stations grass and hit a steel rod sticking out of the ground. It was used to keep a cement parking block in place that was no longer there anymore. I bent the crankshaft and you could not pull the string anymore. 😲😭 It cost about $135 at the time and the mower cost about 200 new. I did not have $135 at the time and paid my parents back. Life lessons.... 🤨😐😭😩

@@brianevans6819 I lived in an oil boom town. The boom was over, but there was(and is) steel stuff sticking out all over. I did not see this one because of the grass. I was lucky to have other mowers to use. We had one that had been given to us that had a 27 inch blade. The problem was that if there were any depressions in the ground, the front of the mower would hit the ground, stopping it. We did not use that mower much.

You are fortunate. A friend of mine bought and installed an after market blade. Started mowing his yard, the blade broke in half, sending 2 pieces out the back. It struck both of my friends legs, ergo, trip to emergency room. He survived, but he doesn't use power mowers anymore.

At this point, I'd use the mower as a parts machine. If in the future you come across a good used engine for cheap, it may be worth installing it to this mower since the rest of the mower is in good condition.

Hey Home Garage, just here to update you on my strimmer. I received the carburetor yesterday and have been fixing the strimmer today, put new fuel lines on, and the new carb, after i did all that, i then tried it out and see if the idling issue was resolved, but there was a lot of air in the system and it wouldn't idle smoothly, and no matter what we did we couldn't get the air out of the system, so we put the old fuel lines on (new fuel filter), and then saw that it was priming much better than before, we then started it, and the idling issue was resolved, but it would rev slightly then go back down to idle (on its own), we resolved that issue, but another issue occured, it was idling like it was fixed and ready to be used, starting using it, then letting go of the throttle and very quickly died, so as soon as you press the throttle it'll work but then will all of a sudden die. So the issue is - Use the throttle, and then the engine shuts off, but the idling situation is working now, but it's just doesn't like to stay on the throttle, nor like to be idled after high revs. Really could use your work as i watch your vids and your a master, and like you said (if the engine itself is working, then it's never dead :D) Love your vids. Loads of support, and also support petrol for the future

thanks, when replacing a carb, you sometimes have to make a slight adjustment to the fuel screws to get it to work. I'd increase the fuel on the "L" first and see what happens

@@HomeGaragechannel ok, and it does idle perfectly now, it’s just during high speed it, and when you let go of the throttle it just shuts off, so it won’t idle after that Should I try the H screw, if so, what should I do 👍

3:24 get a blade removal tool - it clamps to the deck and you put the blade in between it. Works like a charm! Not very expensive and it is well worth it so you don't have to wedge a piece of wood under there. Really comes in handy getting the 3 blades off of my ZTR. It's already hard to get an arm up under there to take the blades off but it's much easier when you can clamp down the blade and remove the screw without having to work a piece of wood under to catch the blade.

12:44 Keep the deck for if you come across another mower with a good engine and a crappy deck. As for the engine, take whatever undamaged parts you can from it and scrap the rest. You see enough free and cheap mowers that sooner or later, you'll come across one with the engine you need that will represent a far better time/cost savings vs. fixing that hot mess.

A couple days ago I bought a Husqvarna awd mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine like this one and I can’t get it to run for the life of me. The person I bought it from out an aftermarket carb on there and it would only start when you took the air filter off and never came to full power and would almost die when you tried to use it. I cleaned and put the old carb back on. Checked the flywheel key and it was good. Took the valve cover off and found the exhaust valve missing the cap. So I adjusted the valves (intake .003 and exhaust .005) and now it won’t start at all. Any ideas?

People seem to love these cheap FWD self propelled mowers for some reason. Plenty of good useable parts left on that blown engine so it’s win-win really. If you work on mowers like I do you probably have a pretty decent selection of good used engines standing by for just such an occasion LOL!

I think you should just put a donor engine onto it. It has a good deck and self propelled system now. I would take the engine off that rusted lawn boy deck and put it on here. The worst thing I ever hit with my lawnmower was an outdoor door mat. The mower sucked it up under the deck and almost stalled completely before I turned off the mower. I don’t think I damaged anything because it still runs as smooth as before. I got lucky with that one 😅

I'm refubishing a mower myself now (waiting for a new chassis and other stuff), total amount will be around half the price of what I paid it new 8 years ago and 1/3 of the same specs newer model that they sell now, but I plan to reinforce the chassis and therefore make it better than the new one. So, in the end, expensive: yes. Makes sense? Yes too. On a mower like this, if I was wearing your clothes, I'd be very careful: either you find a bad chassis one with a good engine and from 2 you make 1, or I'd think twice, especially I'd consider the price you pay Vs. the one you can sell it for, the market situation (how these are requested) etc.

The only way this engine would be economically feasible to repair is if you already had most of the expensive parts on hand in good used condition. Even if you did, an engine that has sustained this much damage may have other damage in the form of tolerances being out of spec etc. because of the high forces against them when the damage was done. I would probably only attempt to repair it for fun; just to see how it turns out and only if I had the used parts on hand. I would either replace the engine with a known good engine (if I had one on hand) before reselling it or just call it a parts mower.

I'd review the economics of a used engine vs what the mower would be worth. I'm sure it would be cheaper than parts and labor invested in fixing the old engine with used parts, but I'm not sure what the mower would be worth in working condition. It might not pencil out to fix it. I don't think I'd even keep it around for parts. The deck is usable, but it's nothing special.

I’ll bet that you can find a compatible engine which can benefit from any parts you can recover.

Parts mower! Keep it together until you find parts to fix it. If no parts are found by the time you could fix a better shape mower, strip this one into that one.

If you have a used engine then do a quick swap and send it. No engine then you’ve got yourself a good parts mower.

What happened to that mower probably started with ..... "hold my beer" or .. "On this episode of Jackass..." That engine is trashed. I bet the upper end of the crank and housing is smoked after running in that condition. Looks like the deck is fair shape. I'd do a swap with a mower that had a damaged deck and a good engine. Then salvage whatever parts are usable.

Too much damage to fix. I saw the crank case crack early in the video, straight after cleaning, & I also noticed the seal damage, which told me the crank is bent. I would fit a good used engine.
