Hi, in this 'trying to fix' video I attempt to repair a faulty Apple Magic Mouse purchased from eBay. This is the version 1 Magic Mouse with the replaceable batteries.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

That "little gold switch" is actually a pogo pin that is used to ground the metal chassis so the touch sensor can work. Similarly the little metal fingers are to ground things.

My Magic Mouse 1 had intermittent power issues. I tracked it down to the sockets that the the "nipples" on the positive end of the batteries fit into. The battery contacts at that end were deeper than the reach of the battery "nipples. No contact was being made. The sockets were carefully filled with alfoil to enable electrical contact when fresh batteries were loaded. The mouse then worked . Its not too hard and worked for me.also placed a tiny bit of blue tack against the lid and batteries as they move around. Works for me.

From what I recall, the way that mouse detects right-click is because the entire top surface is essentially a touch-pad (how horizontal and vertical scroll work), and weather click is left or right depends upon where it thinks your finger is. Even a new magic mouse won't register right-click if you rest both fingers on the blasted thing. Search for apple download DL1836, extract, extract AppleWirelessMouse64.exe with 7zip and run dpinst; on reboot you should be able to enable scroll and enable/disable right-click.

‚Even a new Magic Mouse won‘t register a right-click if you rest both fingers ion the blasted thing.‘ - I work with one every day and that‘s just not true. Your technical explanation was otherwise correct I think, but magic mice have multitouch, so how many fingers you rest on it has zero impact on it‘s clicking capability. I think the problem is probably that Vince snapped that plastic clip that was putting pressure on the digitiser in order to put the ribbon cable back in.

@@sweetasbloodredjam Allow me to backpedal, but only slightly. They may have fixed this with the Magic Mouse 2, but 6 Magic Mice and 10 think they were Mighty Mice (with the ball bearing scroll ball atop, but they use a similar capacitive detection to distinguish between click and right-click) would not register a right-click unless I lifted my index finger slightly. Sorry you had to deal with that bs. The magic mouse 2 is very reliable imo, but I haven't really had problems with the V1 either. At 17:19 you will see a silver square switch with a black plastic part in the middle next to the optical sensor. Could it be that when you right click the gold pin being pressed in makes a contact that works with the regular click to make it send a right click signal to computer? And it’s not being fully depressed when put together before some reason?

Vince, if you look closely at the ribbon cable connector on the pcb, on the edge next to the battery negative terminals, there is a little latch. Apple likes to use back latches. Get your tweezers under it and lever it up. Makes the ribbon much easier to insert and removes the risk of damaging the contacts on the ribbon

It is software controlled Vince. There is only 1 button. The touch surface determines which button based on where your fingers are on the mouse. There is a release for the cable you clearly didn't see. All cables that have wings have a catch mechanism. There's far more too it than style. The tactic sensors allow pinch/expand/ scroll up/down with no moving parts. All of these features can be used with Windows though to be honest, windows doesn't implement them terribly well.

These mice are very sensitive to tolerances on the whole case assembly. Any slight knock or drop can displace the right click pressure switch which works like the two finger touch on an apple touch pad. I managed to fix my right click by just tightening the two front screws holding down the click assembly (series 2 mouse) which brought everything back to alignment, more or less.

That metal spring which you bent upwards towards you basically takes input grounding in the top surface. When your finger is close to the right click, it gets activated. I noticed in the video that while taken apart, the right click was only working when you accidentally touched that metal part. This is my understanding. The base PS4 1000/1100 series power and eject touch buttons also work in a similar fashion.

So if you're using Windows without Boot camp that could be the issue because Boot camp convert most of the Mac drivers to Windows format that's all Boot camp is for.

They did make easy to service machines back in the day but standardisation was not their thing. NuBus was the longest living expansion bus they had and it was invented by MIT. My friend your problem is that you are trying to attach the flex cable when the board still has the screws and it's mounted to the other part, try it without the screws on and the board detached from the lower piece. 😁

This is a perfect example of why you shouldn't buy dirty cheap batteries.

I have had Energizer and Duracell batteries leak... It's not just the batteries, there's something else that promotes leaking. Maybe a constant pull on the power, when it gets to a point, alkaline batteries just leak, the crystals form and pressure builds up forcing acid to come out. I notice this more on cheap Chinese flashlights.

Everyone knows apple products are designed not to be taken apart and actually fixed, they do it on purpose.

Technically macs don't have a right click, never have, when the more modern macs were released, Apple made it so that you could software enable a right click if you wanted one, otherwise (at least on the macbooks), the right click was done using a 2-finger tap.

If you use a little bit of black tape it's a lot easier getting those ribbon cables in. Just put the black tape on the ribbon cable and pull it toward where it has to go.

That's just not true. MacOS 8 supported right click in 1997. The first Apple Mouse to have a right click function was the Mighty Mouse introduced in 2005.

@@garrys9336 I was being semi-sarcastic as some models absolutely didn't come with right click and some did. CTRL click and "alternate click" with modifiers were still a thing. One of those "think different" mentalities. That mouse i a perfect example, as the PCB is silkscreened 2009 and absolutely doesn't have a right-click, just a spring to make up for the mechanical button not being there.

The apple mouse right click has touch sensitivity. When clicking right the left finger needs to come off. The gold pin is ground and the three on the corners are ground. The long silver spring thing is just to bring back the mouse to the non click state. Nothing wrong with your Magic Mouse V1 ;) . you should only glue back the plastic hook thing.
