Apple’s known for making some interesting design decisions, and nowhere is that more clear than with their Magic Mouse. Which is powered from the bottom, making it impossible to use while charging. And I’ll explain why Apple made such a strange decision in this video.

Greg, I respectfully disagree with your statement. Having the ability to quickly charge up doesn't justify Apple putting the port at the bottom. Being a Magic Mouse user myself, I have found that over time the battery gets weaker faster and thus requires more frequent top-ups. Having the charging port at such an awkward position really yields no advantages to the end user. The fact that it charges via Lightning only makes things worse, as I have far more USB-C cables lying around than Lightning ones. I appreciate that you give credit to Apple when due, but you should really call them out when they make questionable product decisions (such as these) that really brings no benefit to consumers apart from the so-called 'aesthetic' reasons.

@@BixbyConsequence Ahh yes, '2 minute break twice a year' when a 2 minute charge only lasts 9 hours at best. It takes 2 hours to charge to full and a full charge only lasts 6 months of moderate usage but yes, lets ignore a stupid design decision just because it doesn't happen frequently. After the initial redesign it would cost them literally nothing to put the charging port on the side like every other wireless mouse on the market. Not like the mouse laying on its side puts additional strain on the charging cable and causes it to break faster or anything, you know, the $20 custom charging cable that apple only sells unlike every other wireless device using a standard usb cable so if it breaks you just use one of those like your wireless headphone cable, your phone charging cable, wireless speaker cable, alarm clock cable. Nope, if the cable breaks you're stuck until you go to the store and spend $20 on a single wire, totally not a cash grab. Let's put the charging port on the back of the phone too so you have to awkwardly hold it if you decide to use it when charging, wouldn't want people using a wired phone... God forbid anyone have the option to turn it into a wired device if they don't want to deal with the hassle of charging it anymore, totally didn't make it like that so you're forced to buy a new mouse if you actually want a wired one cause apple totally doesn't milk their customers. Next you'll be buying bluetooth headphones/earbuds where the charging cable would stick in your ear when you try to use it, god forbid anyone have the choice to turn their device back into a wired one like every other wireless mouse on the market. You gonna buy a car where the gas door is on the bottom which forces you to flip the car over or slide under it too? Not like you have to fill gas all that often right... You crapple fanboys are so quick to defend obvious design flaws, the mouse wasn't even designed to stand on the side or upside down so you just have an awkward teeter totter, you gonna get some water glasses where the bottom is curved too so your cup just spills whenever you let it go? You only have to hold the glass for a couple minutes while you drink it right... Y'all are the biggest cult in the world but part of being is a cult is not realizing you're in a cult so enjoy your cult I guess. 🤷‍♂

This is the most ridicilus explanation i ever heard. They had to „redesign“ the mouse by removing the door and adding the port. The position of the port has nothing to do with the internal placement of the battery. Youre not directly plugging into the battery. It has to do with the design, but not as you explained it. I think it has to do with the touch surface, when the port is on the front they have to make a cutout in it for the port and they didnt want that. But anyway i avoided the stupid and expensive magicmouse and keyboard and went for a logitech mx mac keyboard and a mx master 3 mouse. They are cheaper and just better devices….

The glossy part that you touch curves all the way over the edge and there is physically no space to place a port there, and they likely didn’t want to spend the r&d on fully redesigning the mouse. I know, a strange decision and I also don’t love using this mouse in the first place as I much prefer a trackpad or an actual mouse, not this weird hybrid, but the charging port thing is really such an odd bone to pick when it really doesn’t matter at all given how quickly it charges and there are a million more important criticisms of this mouse than that non issue.

That's not true for Lithium batteries, particularly ones not exposed to heat that could shorten their lifespan further at full charge. It's far more damaging to Lithium batteries to actually run them constantly through charge / discharge cycles than to keep them topped up at room temperature (or a bit higher given hand temperature). That and Apple could always afford capping charging at less than 100% (e.g. 85%) if that were such an issue, given they already last for months on end according to users. Now for a product of this caliber the number of charge / discharge cycles it goes through may be relatively little so the balance might tip in favor of keeping charge at lesser values on average but I'm tackling the general idea here.

And I could imagine really good that Apple wanted to force people to have this cable-less experience. Because it is very different from the experience you have with the keyboard or the trackpad. Total capacity is 1 month and you have to charge it like charging a phone. That's just one more thing to remember. Hey, I have some issues with this explanation. I get that it takes money in r&d and tooling to significantly alter the design of a product, but there is indeed an issue I would like for you to have mentioned. And that is the fact that batteries degrade with time, it's a fundamental property of rechargeable cells. Let's say I upgrade on a less frequent basis than most, say every 6-7 years. I'm fairly certain that the magic mouse won't keep its endurance that long, so unless I buy newer ones get the battery replaced, I cannot use it. I believe I'd be able to had the carge port been parallel to the ground. This would force me to spend more on a mouse that's fundamentally fine, and I don't that's a good time

The maximum capacity of the battery will degrade, recharge will not. Lets say the battery capacity falls from 100% to 60%, after 5 years. Full battery of those mice lasted for 30 days, so even with a degrated battery you can still charge it for 2 mins and get 9 hours. A degrated battery has nothing to with the 2 min charge.A degrated battery does not cause issues with the charging time to the current battery capacity level. A degrated battery will only lower battery life.

The adapter was made of two elements: a charging base and rechargeable battery pack which looked like an original battery cover of Magic Mouse. It worked like MagSafe today, aligning the mouse on the charger using magnets, but the charging speed wasn’t very fast. There were few other brands making their own solutions based on this idea (one of them was from Mobee brand), before disappearing from the market after Apple has discontinued 1st generation of Magic Mouse. I think Apple has missed the opportunity to bring wireless charging to Magic Mouse with introduction of 24” iMac, because from the technological point of view it’s not impossible to add MagSafe technology to their mouse.

Plugging the mouse shortly while taking a break can make it last for the rest of the day, while plugging it in during the lunch break can charge it to almost full capacity. Also, Magic Mice come with incredibly powerful batteries for such tiny devices. I've been using mine for five years now, and even though the battery has obviously degraded it still lasts months on one charge. OK, try this one. Today I was looking for something in my control panel, went to scroll down, and accidentally turned OFF BlueTooth. Now I had no mouse to turn it back on again. If the charging port had been where I could use the mouse while it was plugged in, I simply could have connected it to my charging cable, and clicked BT back on. Instead, I had to connect my keyboard to the charging cable, hit Command-Spacebar to bring up Spotlight, enter 'Bluetooth', use my direction arrows to select 'Bluetooth File Transfer', use my arrows again to select 'Turn On Bluetooth' and hit the return key. (All that after half an hour searching the internet to find those particular instructions while wading through all the useless"'try this's" ) It was a dumb thing to do, but maybe something Apple has never considered to be a drawback to the present design. If the keyboard had been designed the same way, I would have been hooped. Perhaps a shutdown and restart of the computer may have forced a restart of BT but I didn't see that anywhere in the suggestions.

I really tried loving it because I'm heavily invested in the apple ecosystem and I love apple products but their mouse is just utter garbage it has very slow and inaccurate tracking, it's very unergonomic and uncomfortable to use , lighting should fuck off and come included with usb c. Other then the fact that it's really beautiful and elegant it's a piece of shit product. I bought the Logitech mx anywhere 3 and while it doesn't feel as nice and doesn't look as stylish, it's a hundred times more useable.

@@champion1859 It's not healthy to be angry about the design of a product you don't use. It's the last point of the video and I can confirm it's the case because if you read any reddit thread about it, it's painfully obvious that they don't know anything about how the mouse works, how long it lasts, how fast it charges and whether or not you're warned about it being low on battery. It's just a circlejerk like hating pineapple on pizza or the word "moist".

Rechargeable AAs are seriously underrated. Like, good ones can last well up to a decade with basically no capacity drop and are pretty recyclable when they finally die.

Simple, be a gamer. You need the mouse all the time and with more than a 1 button mouse. I understand a 1 button mouse for reading documents and programmers, butt us gamers, nope. I'm a fan of tons of other "I - products" but never the 1 button mouse.

Apple explained = clutching on straws to explain the dumbest apple design choices. What if i am in a meeting and my mouse runs out of battery? I know that Apple is a small indie company, but it does not cost much engineering resources to move the port on the front an run some wires till the battery location
@SurpriseFox

It's not poor design, it's a feature that makes it less convenient so apple can save a buck on tooling. Great explanation.

I appreciate the effort to justify this, but at the end, it just came out as Apple just doesn't care enough to redesign the product since they know that most of the people who buys their products (i.e. the people who use these products) will still buy the mouse regardless of the inconvenience, because ecosystem.
