Trying to FIX : Faulty MSI GAMING LAPTOP from eBay

Hi, in this video I attempt to repair a MSI GL62 7QF gaming laptop which I purchased faulty from eBay. The charge light comes on, but it doesn't power on. Can it be fixed or will it be another fail????
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Whoever owned this laptop really messed it up, it seems a bit fishy how they were asking so many questions. It's like they knew what was wrong with it but didn't say anything.

You could also have destroyed the part yourself. Some chips run on less than 1.5v, and you going nuts and pumping 3v into the pcb could have destroyed anything not 3v tolerant. At your original 0.7v, because it was pulling the same 3A, it would have shown up as heat in the damaged area. Try getting a few cans of freeze spray and spray the area in question then add power for a few seconds and see if anything gets hot enough to melt away the area. Don't ever pump that much voltage into anything with ICs on it. 😲

That looked like a buck converter output for the PCH chip where you were injecting voltage/current. Injecting 5V was probably a bad idea, typically those chips operate around 1V. If the PCH wasn't damaged, it may be now. If you're doing injection from a VRM like that, limit the voltage to 1V, it's generally current that you need to expose issues, not voltage.

Good Effort! I buy loads of these laptops and often have this same fault and it's a Nightmare, made worse that schematics aren't available. Most PC repair channels don't show they're fails. They only show the laptops they manage to fix with simple faults like a MOSFET or Capacitor..... If only if it was that easy in reality!

Edit: I believe the super IO chip is reading the 3volts present at the power button. When you press the button you pull the 3volts to ground and the super IO starts the board. The lower the voltage read on the power supply the stronger is the short curcuit! Something is drawing the full voltage to nearly zero.

Hey Vince, started watching a few years ago as I was doing the very same things you often do on this channel and I want to thank you for inspiring me to push myself and get over the fear of attempting repairs like this one here. I too have many items piled up of which I never really got there with , but I believe the journey with this stuff is often just as important. Still, at least with your fails you garner some YT views out of it as where I just add another level to my ever growing stack of fails lol.
