Hi, this 'trying to fix' video shows me attempting to repair a faulty Xbox 360 console that was purchased from eBay. It has a flashing green light and a disc tray that keeps ejecting.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

Excellent! =D I laughed when it wouldn't eject after you re-assembled it lol The same belt problem happens with the old original XBOX systems too. Vaccuum - technically the ESD police will claim that its high risk, but its pretty low risk imo. I've vaccuumed thousands of electronic devices out over the years and never had a problem. Feather duster I would avoid like the plague though lol - those things generate huge amounts of static!
@Mymatevince

Lol, I knew if the vacuum didn't get the ESD police then the duster definitely would!!!!! I think it was trying to 'troll' me Chris, working perfectly when apart and then not when back together. BTW I got an Atari Lynx (original version) the other day Chris, it is supposed to be dead so I may need your expertise on that one, I was looking on your channel but I could only find the Lynx 2. I am hoping they have a similar insides :-)
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 5 жыл бұрын
Hehe =D Regards the Lynx, they are pretty much the same! The board is layed out differently, but the components are the same. It has likely got a failed mosfet transistor. You can trick them into powering up with that fault by wiring the ground (from the battery bay) up to the ground on the headphone jack socket. I think that works because the mosfet is effectively switching the ground line, and by joining those up with a wire you bypass that soft power on. Once it does power up, check 5v somewhere to make sure it IS 5v and not 9V (or that can kill other things). If the zener diode on there fails the 5v line can go up to 9v.
@Mymatevince

@@GadgetUK164 Thanks for the tips Chris. I will re watch your Lynx vid right now to see what's what. Unfortunately it was a little bit pricey for a birthday pressie back then :-)

You can heat those seals up with a blow dryer or heat gun and get them off in perfect condition 90% of the time. I've fixed 100s of these things over the years. Unfortunately they can't all be fixed, especially if they were damaged from someone trying to fix it before myself or another decent repair guy like Vince gete's our hands on them. With that said I'm sitting on about 25 consoles that are simply good for spare parts only now.

An Xbox 360 tip, the red ring of death aka rrod is caused by the thermal paste. All you need to do is replace it with a new one. Also, e74 or any of the E errorrs are caused by the heatsinks full of dust or the paste. Hope this helps later on.

I tend to do amateur repares on Xbox 360. The green light flashing means that the disk tray is opening/closing. If it's stuck try replacing the band. I had recently bought one that would refuse to open, simply putting a new band in it made it work good as new. I hope this helps. Even just a little. Also, the heat syncs are attached to the motherboard itself as well as the metal shield, they are somewhat difficult to do. but with practice and the right tools you can get it done easily. Edit: I only watched the first few minutes. But my advice might help if you get another?

I had this disc drive problem before, I don't know if you resolved it but the way I dealt with it was pretty basic. For some reason the top magnet that holds the disc to the spindle is too strong and sticks to the spindle when there is no game in the drive. That is what is causing the blockage and not letting the tray eject, so I just left a disc in the tray at all times and I never had the problem again. I know it is a pain but I could not find a way around this one. Hope this helps.

Vince, the amperage rating on the back of the console, in combination with the power socket type and whether or not the console has HDMI defines what motherboard revision you have. Over the lifetime of the 360, the original phat models had 5 revisions - Xenon, Zephyr (these 2 are the primary RROD machines), Opus, Falcon and Jasper. As your console has a rating of 12.1A, you automatically know that's a Jasper console - the last and most reliable revision. Check out this link, you can find out, which revision of 360 you may get in the future: www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjrq5Kz4o7jAhUqxoUKHdgrAH8QjRx6BAgBEAU&url=https%3A%2F%2Fweekendmodder.com%2Fidentify.html&psig=AOvVaw12Mu3aJ2iYIuUOcv9DVEzp&ust=1561900353430444 Word of warning; AVOID XENONS AND ZEPHYRS. They're an absolute waste of time, not at all worth trying to fix. Stick to DVD issues with Falcons and Jaspers. As the console is a Jasper, it's VERY unlikely that it'll suffer from the RROD. That said though, the physical process of taking off the X-Clamps and heatsinks is extremely unlikely to damage the CPU or GPU and cause an RROD - put simply, you'd have to be trying intentionally to get that to happen. If you do want to go in and change the thermal paste, which is a good idea, I'd highly recommend picking up an X-Clamp removal tool. It's a really cheap tool that makes removing the X-Clamps really easy. A lot of people tend to go in with a flathead screwdriver, the issue being that if you slip, it's very easy to accidentally cut a bunch of traces - the X-Clamp tool makes that a non-issue. Check that out here: weekendmodder.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=60&product_id=119 Last thing, you should totally try RGHing the console. To cut a long story short, it's basically the process of soldering in a modchip so the console can run any software you want. It's a tricky but super fun challenge you might find interesting for a future video and there's tons of tutorials on KZbin - the 360 is far from dead. I've done dozens of console myself so if you want any advice about the 360 in general, feel free to ask :) I'd recommend the Weekend Modder's tutorial if you ever want to try an RGH. Again though, stick to Falcons and Jaspers. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jou1lqebbtN0qZo Give it a go! All you'd need is a NAND-X/JRP which you could reuse on any other console for £30, and a modchip costs less than £5. Really small and cheap investment for a ton of fun :)

No offense but that x clamp removal tool looks like a waste of money. I repaste my zephyr Halo 3 Xbox 360 about every 2-3 years and when I first removed the xclamps on it I just used a small flat head and it was dead easy. Still just cause older models require maintenance doesn't mean they will magically rrod one day if you take care of it
@FSXpilot737
@FSXpilot737 5 жыл бұрын
@@billy-waynejeffcoat4828 Like I said, while you absolutely can use a flat head, you run the risk of potentially cutting traces on the motherboard if you slip. In my experience, I also found using the flat head tricky when trying to get the X-Clamps back on. Using the removal tool made it trivial. IMO, considering the tool makes it far safer and far easier to remove and replace the X-Clamps, I can't really complain for $4. For me anyway, it was money well spent, but a flat head will still work as you said. Xenon's and Zephyr's had a manufacturing defect in the GPU itself. While performing maintenance will certainly help, in the long run, both will inevitably RROD. When considering all the work needed, like disassembly, reapplying paste and almost certainly a cooling upgrade (and when you also factor in that Xenon's don't have HDMI), it's a much more sensible bet to go for a Falcon or Jasper. Even with that in mind, if Vince does go for performing the RGH, Xenon's and particularly Zephyrs perform horribly with RGH1.2 anyway. With all that considered, it just doesn't make sense to put so much work into Xenons and Zephyrs.
@billy-waynejeffcoat4828
@billy-waynejeffcoat4828 5 жыл бұрын
@@FSXpilot737 I understand a steady hand helps when removing those x clamps with a flat head but I never found it difficult. And what do you mean to much work? What I do with my zephyr is absolutely necessary for falcon and Jasper as well as Trinity and Corona. Thermal paste only has a life expectancy of about a decade. You need to perform maintenance on any modern console because they put out more heat than retro consoles by a fair bit. And personally if I was going to rgh a Xbox 360 it would be a Trinity or Corona since they are so cheap you can pick them up for less than 50$ and are easily more reliable than a Jasper.
@FSXpilot737
@FSXpilot737 5 жыл бұрын
@@billy-waynejeffcoat4828 You're correct about needing to replace the thermal paste, that's not in doubt. It IS in doubt that a Xenon or Zephyr would even survive that long. Most consoles RRODed, at longest, a year and a half after release in regards to the initial RROD "frenzy" if you will. Again, you're correct about needing to perform maintenance on all consoles. My point is by the time you get around to NEEDING to reapply paste, your Xenon or Zephyr is almost certainly dead. If you need to open it up sooner to prevent RROD, then there's your extra work - it's just not worth the hassle. Why not just buy a Falcon or Jasper which costs the same, has a statistically lower failure rate, and can go for longer periods before maintenance? And I'd still recommend a Falcon or Jasper to RGH as they're cheaper than Trinity or Corona consoles and run just as well. In my experience, slims run just as hot as a Jasper. That said though, any console post Opus is a great RGH regardless.

@@FSXpilot737 I don't know I'm just confused about the survived that long statement. My zephyr was manufactured over a decade ago, still sees heavy use and doesn't miss a beat. I think the reason they failed left and right was insufficient cooling and improper usage. Allot of people shoved these things in cramped entertainment centers and played for excessive amounts of time. They effectively thought they could treat these things like the generation before it while that was definitely not the case. I understand what your saying, if your going to go out and buy one you might as well buy a less hassle free one but I enjoy my zephyr halo3 Xbox

You 100% have to replace the thermal paste, the chances of damaging the solder on the BGA is pretty much 0 and if you did manage to do that by simply replacing the thermal paste then you wouldn't have gotten more than a couple of months out of it anyway before the solder failed completely. the thermal paste that was used was extremely low quality and should never have been used in anything and is definitely dried up and theres evidence of this in the fact that the fans are spinning at full speed almost as soon as the console was turned on.

Nice fix, Vince. The problem of not opening the tray is the classic "sticky tray" problem - rubber band gets dusty and a little loose over the years and can't overcome the force of the magnet holding the tray closed. If the dvd tray is sticky and you want to open it, never ever pull on it to try to open it, you will just end up breaking the front bezel. The solution is to tap the console with your hand just above the dvd drive, the tap will release the tray from the magnet and it will open. Also, consoles that are 12v 12.1a (so called Jasper) like you got there are safe to buy, they are rock solid and most reliable of all Xbox 360 models including slim. They will only have minor issues and will never have cpu/gpu problems.

Vacuuming does cause static buildup which can damage sensitive electronics, however in practice this is fairly rare as modern electronics are pretty resilient to ESD. The ones telling you it's no problem have probably been vacuuming their desktop PC for years without any issues, that does not mean it's a good idea however. It's always better to use something that won't cause static buildup like canned air. I myself used to clean my desktop PC by vacuuming the inside and never had any issues, but have switched over to canned air as it's just safer. In short both sides are partly correct. You shouldn't vacuum sensitive electronics, but it *probably* won't do any damage if you do.

i worked in a repair shop 2 and fixed and hacked possibly 1000's of these bloody things, if the drive sticks you may get luck by giving it a little tap over the top of the drive to get it to eject, at this point pull the power and take the belt out with tweezers and replace, another trick is to put the belt into a cup of boiling water for a few minutes dry it off and put it back, works like a charm and saves a tear down for that kind of fault, still got three rgh slims i like to use for Lan partys and still do the odd kamikaze hack when i get called upon 8-)

@dan_k1992
@dan_k1992 5 жыл бұрын
The only issue with this unit is the closing/opening mechanism in the discdrive... When you openned it up for cleaning, it is clearly visible that the laser and the motor were not closing up. So the disk drive doesn't send the signal back to the consol that it's now close/open... hence you get the flashing green light. If you are unable to fix the mechanism, the only option you have is to hook the discdrive to a pc, read the dvdkey out, and flash it to a new dvd drive to replace it.

Yellow light of death is a hardware failure, a PS3 hardware failure. Replacing thermals does not fix hardware failures. It took Microsoft and Sony years to make 360's and PS3's that lasted reliably. Quality is not something I associate with any console, the are all made on the cheap. If you really want quality, build a decent gaming PC.

Hey vince. It looks like you have a jasper v2 model 360. The main difference between jasper v1 and v2 is the ram chips and the heatsink. Every thing else including the power brick is the same. FYI the jasper v2 is also known as a “kronos” model. These jaspers/kronos’ are the most reliable of the platform, more reliable than the slim and E models. Mine is running strong to this day! They still make FIFA games for the previous generation of consoles because children, and people in poorer countries, might only have those, and FIFA games tend to be popular for those markets. They released up to FIFA 14 on the Playstation 2 for example (although it was a much different game from the FIFA 14 released on modern consoles). Similar is how the Wii is still receiving Just Dance titles, the upcoming JD2020 is still getting a Wii release 13 years since the console launched.

Cleaning electronic devices... the chance of ESD (Eltro-Static Discharge) from vacuum cleaner or dusting device to an electronic device is small. However, using these devices may accidentally 'charge up' your body with electrostatic electricity. This is what you need to be careful of. ESD discharge from your body is enough voltage to fry (destroy) any somewhat sensitive Intergrated Circuit (IC chip). ALWAYS wear a wrist grounding strap. Be sure your grounding source is actually grounded. Concerning using isopropyl alcohol on plastic. Be careful using IPA on plastics, there are some plastics used in electronic devices that require a certain amount of surface oils to remain a stable plastic. Removing these oils will cause the plastic to become brittle. Using IPA on mechanical switches (blade contact switches) is fine. However, the contact will still need cleaning. Any rough thin piece of paper will 'burnish clean' the switch contacts. I like using a business card, don't use a shiny or slick business card, they are worthless as a contact cleaner. Lubrication of metal to plastic moving parts should be a grease (molybdenum disulfide grease), metal to metal moving parts should be lubricated with oil (3 in 1 oil is my favorite). There is an exception to every rule, on friction surfaces that are normally vertical when operated, use grease. On motor to linear movement assemblies, be sure to put alignment marks on both the beginning and end positions on the gears that move for each movement the device makes. This will insure you aren't using 90% of your repair time trying to get the device to work again. I have 5 colors of fine tip permanent markers sitting ready for this task, but a white fine tipped Sharpie marker will suffice (maybe a black Sharpie too).

At 16:08 where your right thumb is on it is a guide rail (at 17:32 right) that moves this black, sliding part. If the pin (at 17:38 right in front of the right limit switch) of the sliding part is not in the guide rail, it will not work either. So the drawer is tried to move out while the laser unit is not completely pulled down.
