6:54 What she is picking up on is the Swedish pitch accent. It's cool that she noticed that. Swedish has two pitch accents, sort of like tones. In some cases, you have words that are spelled the same but mean different things. Tomten can mean both "the garden" and "Santa Claus" depending on how you intonate each syllable. Something similar exists in English too. "PreSENT me the PREsent." However, this is done by stressing a syllable, not by pitch accents.

@@zezmcguffin5190 There's a KZbin video that explains it in great detail with plenty of examples here kzbin.info/www/bejne/oonTaJKJn8ygaZY The short answer is that accent 1 where "tomten" means the garden is pronounced similarly to English words that emphasize the first syllable. Accent 2 where "tomten" means Santa Clause you put the main emphasis on the first syllable, but also put a slightly weaker emphasis on the second syllable as well.

Some of the longer words are basically just nonsense even to us Swedes. They are technically correct since you can string different words together more or less endlessly, but by and large I think it's fair to say that any words "containing" more than two or three English equivalents are probably highly unusual. All of that said, I think you did a pretty good job. Until you came to the overly long words, you made yourself fairly well understood. Congrats!

They are not nonsense, since we have compound words in Swedish you can literally with some fantasy create really long words. They still mean something real but may not be used, that does not make it nonsense just really long compounds.

It's not the longest word, we have no realistic upper limit on wordlength since we can combine "sammansatta ord" forever by using possessives forever. But no, noone would say that word normally since it's way more than mouthful. But as other have said, don't assume google translate speaks Swedish all that well.

I think the funniest Swedish sentence is in the West Gothian accent. It has only 1 consonant. It means "There is a creek, and in the creet is an island". It goes: Dä e å, å' i å'a ä e ö Say it fast.

I am from Hälsingland, and my Grandmother tought it like this to me "E ä e å, å i åa ä e ö". Only vowels.

When I did my military conscript service in Skåne, our whole platoon came from either Stockholm or Östergötland so every weekend when we was free, when rode the train home and there was this conductor that sounded as he said “nypåfräsda” which is slang for, how do I explain it “just had sex”? After that every time a conductor entered the train wagon we all raised or tickets and yelled “NYPÅFRÄSDA”! Yeah, not really that mature but hey it was hilarious for 19 year boys in the training to become men! I still chuckle when I see a train conductor, but I don’t say it any longer!

A tip I got when I was trying to learn Russian was that, when you come across a long word for the first time, instead of instinctively starting from the beginning of the word, start from the end and gradually add syllables. Example of: "Trakasserier" (fonetically) ier, ser-ier, ka-ser-ier, tra-ka-ser-ier. The more accustomed to the language you are the bigger "chunks" you can do at a time :-)

Unless it was made clear: the text-to-voice often goes bananas on the longer composite words, and no longer sounds like swedish. Basically it's just going "stacatto" sputting out syllables one after the other.

This video was funny. You made me laugh, using words not even we Swedes uses. Nypåstigna is a word a rail conductor uses when checking tickets for new travellers just boarded a train. Swedish doesn't have a fixed number of words. You create words by connecting them. For example if you want to say "Sunday anxiety" we say "Sundayanxiety" - making it into one word. So if you for example have a couch that you sit in while you have your Sunday anxiety you could say "sundayanxietycouch" (söndagsångestsoffa). So there's no limit of words or word length. So you can always try to see if you can find smaller words in a bigger to get the meaning of the word. Sometimes it's just wrong thou as "smörgås" (sandwich) means "butter goose".

"Ändamålsenlighetstänkande" Ändamål = End goal. -s: genitive suffix. "enlig" = in accordance to -het: suffix that marks that a word ins a compound adjective. Thus: ändamålsenlighet = something that has the quality of being in accordance to the end goal, or in other words, "appropriateness" in English. Then comes another -s genitive-marking suffix inside the word, between the two major parts. Finally, "tänkande" is thinking, but devoid of any temporal markers. Putting all that together, and we get something that means: "Thinking that is directed to focus on the appropriateness of an action with regard to the stated end goal of the action"

those long words bleed together to become word puzzles to me :P many of those longs words I would separate into several single words if I ever had to use them. I think you would find words that sound the same with different spellings, like words that starts with k, kj, tj, sj etc something you would feel you would learn something not even the swedish military would use that long tank transport word, they have their own words for it, like "get the....."

Most of the long ones aren't even used by swedes. Some of the REALLY long ones are only used in specific places, for example, in the military (none of the examples in this video as far as I could tell, but yeah). The exception I would say is the realisationsvinstbeskattning, but even that one has a so called "förkortning". Unfortunately, I am not sure what the word we use instead is, but it is easier to pronounce. Found it! Reavinstskatt

I guess you know it already but as these are just "sammansatta ord" you would probably understand what they mean if you just learn each word inside of them. Like "sjuksköterska"... sjuk=sick, sköta=take care of, and the ending "erska" usually means a woman does it. Ok well not everything makes sense as men are also sjuksköterskor but I guess it could be because it's an old word maybe. But you can see the same form in "städerska" (cleaning lady).. Städa=Clean.

The letter Y is always considered to be a vowel in Swedish, and the word "tjyvlyssna" is a compound word made up of two words, tjuv-lyssna, so there aren't that many consonants next to each other.

Yes, it's not easy to explain this with same or almost same sounding words with different spellings. Sjuka - (to be) sick/ill Skjuta - (to) shoot, (to) push (in front of you) Tjuta - as in a really high pitched sound, like an alarm. Another meaning of this (maybe not used everywhere in Sweden), is a cry when in pain. Chock - shock Schack - Chess Stjärna - Star Kjol - Skirt Kil - (a) wedge These are on top of my head atm, might be more. Another thing that is confusing for foreigners learning Swedish is probably that we don't use THE before a word. For instance, if you in English say: I need to catch the train We say Jag måste ta tåget. The equivalent of THE would be DET or DEN. But if we were to say Jag måste ta det tåget We mean a specific train, and the translation is I need to catch THAT train. These are just some observations on my end, and there are probably lots of people that can explain why it is like this. Keep up the good work Kimberly! Or should I say Kämpa på Kimberly! 😋

@@teethelowlife5879 That is correct, in a way. In your example with 🚆. Ett tåg - A or one train. Tåget - The train If a swede says det tåget, we mean a specific train, which in English is That train. Same goes for, for example båten (the boat). Den båten signifies a specific boat, just not any boat. So it's been shortened down, and added to the end of the word. Toughest part for a foreigner to learn is, which is what, and how/when to use it, especially if you don't have similar grammar in your native language.

Evesdropping is from the ancient Swedish word “ öfsadrop” that was the name for water dropping from the roof. If you stood so near the wall of a house so you could hear people inside talk you also stood where the “öfsadrop” were therefor the English word for it “eavesdrop”. The word “town” is also from the ancient Nordic word “tuna”. You have it in some Swedish towns: Eskilstuna, Sigtuna, Vallentuna for ex. “Window” is also from old Norse and meant “wind eye”. The Danes still use the original word “vindue” but in Sweden we use “fönster” which is from the Latin “fenestra” (like the French “fenêtre”). A lot of vikings visited the British isle like 1000 years ago so English have influences from the ancient Norse like the formal word “nay” which is quite similar to the Swedish “nej”.

Nypåstigna = recently boarded. It's used by the ticket controller during ticket controls on the train. They say Nypåstigna when they enter the train car so that the passengers will get their ticket out of the pocket and ready for controll.

The best way to learn the long words is to find and learn the parts first. Stridsvagnstransortvagn - Strid - battle Vagn - wagon Stridavagn - battle tank Transport - transport (from Latin) Vagn - wagon Påhängsvagn - På - on Hängs - hanged Vagn - wagon I never use påhängsvagn. Instead I just say vagn.

I just recently found your channel and I'm really enjoying watching your experience with Sweden and progress in Swedish! I think someone under mentioned that you can't always trust certain syllable combinations, which is unfortunately true and can be very confusing while learning the language. There can also be several versions of the same sound but spelled completely differently. Example: Choklad(chocolate), Stjärna(star), Sju(seven), Skjorta(shirt). All of these have different spellings(ch-stj-sj-skj) but all of them start with the same sound. Then there are words like Geni(genius), journalist(journalist) etc and they _also_ start with the same sound as the words above. But let's leave it there 😂 Going back to the syllables, we do have the same syllable combinations but sometimes completely different pronunciations. For example, the word "to do" in Swedish is "ska", which pronounces s and k like you would think they do. Now we look at the word "spoon" which is "sked" in Swedish. Is it pronounced with s and k separately? No. This time the s and k become a sch troath-y sound. That specific sound is hard to explain haha. I feel like Swedish is an easier language to read than it is to speak, cause our pronunciation is usually very specific and it's also a pitch-accent language. Which more or less means that we can stress certain letters when we talk. Because of that, words can be spelled the exact same, but if you stress a certain letter in the word they mean two completely different things. Example: The word "Tomten" in Swedish. If you drag out the O in the word it becomes "the yard", but if you were to say the word without the dragged out O it becomes "Father Christmas". I'm very impressed with everyone that decides to learn Swedish since it's not the easiest when it comes to pronunciation. So even if it's confusing and we have so many variations of sounds spelled completely different, don't be discouraged! Even if the video did give me a chuckle with your pronunciations I have to say that you seem to have a pretty decent understanding of Swedish(from watching your other videos). With the pronunciation, it's just tons of practice and one day it'll click 😊 As a quick note. The super long words you said are not really something we use, even tho they do make sense. The thing in Swedish is that you can string words almost endlessly together and they would make sense. Do we use them? No haha. That's just too long of words to use in an everyday conversation and how often do we talk about the belonging of the manager of the depot for the supply of uniforms to the personnel of the track cleaners' union of the tramway company. I would say more or less never 😂 Sorry for the long paragraph, hopefully anyone reading it wanting to learn Swedish or not, might understand some of it!

It might help to realize that depending on your English dialect, stuff like Auxilliary and Aerodynamic and Bird and other words actually use the Å Ä Ö sounds in them. TJ, SK, STJ, SJ are just different versions of the noises made in words like Chess, Checkers, Genre etc. DJ, G, Gj, are different variants of the noises made in words like Jungle, yolk etc. The literal translation of Sköldpadda is "Shield Toad" which might make it sound more or less cute depending on how you feel about toads.

If you learn how to break apart compound words into their component parts, then it becomes easier. "Sjuksköterska", would, if you translated the parts one by one and put them together in the same order, become: "Sickcareress". Sjuk = Sick, Skötare = Carer, and the finally the suffix -ska after a work title denotes feminine. Since most nurses are female, that gendered form has become default. "Mentalskötare", OTOH, means nurse in a psychiatric ward, and since more of those were men, it got, and retains the masculine default form.

You can always learn this tounge twister "Flaggstångstoppsknoppsputsare" With would mean "Flagpoletop nob cleaner" And as you say, many of our words are built by combining 2 or more words. For instance, Turtle...as you had in your video is built of 2 words. Sköldpadda would be Sköld-Padda. Where Sköld means shield and Padda means toad. So Shieldtoad if translated directly. I recently found your channel and I like what I see. So keep it up! 👍🏻

The really long combined words are ones we really never use. The fun thing with Swedish is that you can combine words to specify what you mean but some of them are perhaps used just that time

often Swedish words consists of two or more words that are put together to form a new word some examples the word sköldpadda consists of the words sköld that means shield and padda that means toad so a turtle is literally described as a toad with a shield on its back in Swedish tjuvlyssna consists of the words tjuv that means thief and lyssna that means listening so its literal meaning is thief-listening the town name Örnsköldsvik literally means eagles shields bay consisting of örn sköld and vik in english it would be bay of the eagles shield since the order of the word may be different confusing isnt it

Those longer words are just together by clever people for humorous reasons, the longest word you're ever likely to use is the capital gains tax one (and similar). But yes, there's an even longer one. It's 131 letters long and was made specifically to get into the Guiness book of records. It's never been used by anyone at any time.

Love you! The 'A' with a dot over it, is really an 'A' with the letter 'O' over it, the dot actually being a ring. So it is pronounced somewhere inbetween the 'A' and 'O' - Å (for you, it is closer to 'O' I guess) You are doing great - for english speaking persons, the Swedish language is of course very hard to pronounce; even though the two languages have very much etymology in common (hence the viking influences of your language 😊). Hope you will be gettin' back to Sweden very soon!

Sköldpadda if translated directly is two english words : SKÖLD=SHIELD(BECUSE THE SHELL LOOKS LIKE A SHIELD) PADDA=TOAD, i dont know why we have that becuse a turtle does not look like a toad :P

Then again - "skölpadda" covers all species of this family whereas in English you distinguish between "turtle" and "tottoises". Thus Swedish is simpler. ;)

The letter Å was way back in time the letter A with a small O on top of it. Like an A on it's way to become an O. Think "boring", "fore" or even "or". The two letters Ä and Ö had little E's on top long ago I was told, so the two letters are vocal sounds moving from A and O towards an E. Ä, "hair", "fair", "bare" and Ö, "turn", "burn" or "learn". Remember also, that the vocals differ slightly depending on dialects. A simple way to figure out how vocals are pronounced is to use Google translate, select from Swedish and just type an A or an Ä in the from language box and press the speaker ikon. Remeber, the letter A is not pronunced like in English, it's never the "-ey" sound, unless in a direct loan word from english. Had to google myself, there is actually! a "Stridsvagnstransportpåhängsvagn 795C". I guess it would translate into battle "strids" waggon "vagn" transport (same word) trailer "vagn". So a battle waggon is a tank, who knew? The long one is not a word you use daily, unless your in an army tank platoon I guess.

Mostly focus on the alhabet and how we pronounce all the letters, "A" for example. Long/soft, and short/hard vowels too. It helps immensly.

I'm sorry if it is just stating something that you already know, but there is a general rule of thumb to help separate the sounds when a word starts with sk or a k! :) When the sk/k is followed by a hard vowel (AOUÅ) it is pronounced as in "skate/skål" for sk or "candy" for k, and when it is a soft vowel (EIYÄÖ) it is like in "sju" for sk and "tjuv" following a k. Of course there will be some exceptions, but very rarely. Btw I love your channel and your Swedish skills are already really good!
