We have been retired and living on our social security only for 7 years now. Have no debt, take two trips a year to the Caribbean, live a very frugal life style but seem to have plenty of money to do what we want. Don’t waste money on take out foods, restaurants, clothes, etc.

So when my mother died, I discovered she was spending almost $200/ month on newspapers she wasn't reading! I cancelled all that and bought an annual digital subscription to the local newspaper for $50! I don't do the lottery because I hate losing and in my mind the house always wins. Blessed Easter to you as well.

Keith - I totally agree with you. I have money set aside for traveling oversea, but I'm not sure how much I want to travel overseas. If I am concerned at all about expenses, I wouldn't take any trips overseas. Just give me shelter, internet, cellphone and enough money to pay my taxes, insurance, etc....and just a few extra bucks to have fun and I am happy. I don't need $7K trips or a swimming pool. A few bucks for a couple of overnighters to a 2-4 hour trip is all I need.

We reduced our monthly income be contributing more to savings and retirement so our monthly income matched our social security. We did this for the last 3 years, and we have lived very comfortable (no debt during this time other than similar items you have listed). It can be done but lifestyle for most will have to change. Buzz: You provide valuable content by showing people how to establish a minimum dignity floor for expenses with a reserve fund for unexpected costs that may occur. I hope your subscriber base continues to increase to help you not have to return to work. Your longevity estimation is generally on the low side; people such as yourself live beyond the averages. Controlling expenses is one of the biggest levers that a person has to not run out of money in retirement, and your careful tracking of expenses is a big part of the equation. Hi. Millennial Mom here.. this is a very small suggestion but I am literally watching your video while waiting on my boys. You can reduce the “haircut” number by getting it done at a Barber College. They dont charge…. Bc the students need hours… some you might have to schedule. If you are anywhere near Mayfield the one at GoldenGate is good. I recommend. I have T-Mobile internet.. I’m in the Cleveland area. I’ve had it a few years and I don’t have any issues with it.. my kids play video games on it… Congrats on the lotto!! I buy them every now and again… but not the $50 ones.

Looks like it’s working! Hope you can squeeze a vacation/trip or two out of the budget each year. Youre in the “go go years” so enjoy it before your health limits your ability to travel. If it gets too tight a side hustle vs returning to a regular job might fill the bill. I followed your categories and did a back of the envelope account of our expenses and came up with a $700 surplus per month. However I didn’t start taking SS until 70, with my husband switching to the spousal benefit since it was a few dollars higher. I was able to take a modest vacation this winter. Got a chance to be with the grand kid for a week in Florida. I will have to take RMD this year so my couple hundred thousand nest egg will start to go down. It’s good you don’t have to dip too deeply into your nest egg. By the time your my age hopefully your egg will grow so your future will be even more secure. I enjoy the videos and best of luck!

Insightful breakdown. Tips: Ditch the every kind of pod (laundry, d/w, coffee) as it is at LEAST twice as expensive as serve-it-yourself. A sponge and box of cheap Kleenex can do the job a lot cheaper than paper towels. $1000 a month for groceries is about $36/day. Unless you are buying steak and organic, you could probably reduce that. Looking forward to see how else you find to save!

Can an American live on $600/mo? Depends on the American. In have for the past 14 years. That's totally spend. (Jan 1 account balance - Dec 31 account balance) / 12. No budget. Just what it is. I retired 22 years ago at 45 with $100k cash, $300 home equity and $2200/mo mortgage, $3k prop tax in San Jose CA. Must be a horrible life. Not for me. I was a software engineer so if I wanted more money it wouldn't be a problem going back to work. And I like writing software, still do just for fun. I own my Phoenix home and prop tax is $133/mo. I funded my retirement by slow flipping my house. Buy a dump, fix it up as I feel like it, sell after at least 2 years, repeat. $250k cap gain is tax free home sale. I enjoy design and remodeling. I treasure hunt for salvage building materials. I build doors, cabinets, etc... from thrown away furniture. Working on house #4 now. Because my taxable income is basically $0 I don't have to file state or Federal income tax. It also means my health insurance has been Medicaid for the past 13 years so $0 cost, $copay, $0 deductible. Best insurance I've ever had. Also free smartphone and plan (LifeLine). Took me about 5-8 years to really understand retirement and spending. I started getting rid of things to see how it would be. Soda was the first. Drinking 2 liters a day isn't really a good plan for living healthy to 100+. A little tough. Cable TV went followed by the TV and couch. Shocked I didn't miss TV. On and on. Tried no heat in winter...loved it, Not that hard in Phoenix. Hot water heater off in summer. Water is about 92F so OK. I couldn't have done this with a wife. But for me, that's also been great. Been married. Didn't see the point. Yeah, yeah, find the right one. I'm 67 and know a lot of 65+ guys who are happier solo. Know even more guys married who sure look unhappy but divorce spits the assets and that can be tough when retired. But Gray Divorce is increasing. Today I have $9880 cash in the bank, Seems like a lot to me. Plan to sell this house in 2025/ I may take SS ($3100/mo) in the fall of 2024 if money looks tight. I'll pay it all back when my house sells (one time pay back in 1st year) and back to letting monthly benefit increase. Basically a free loan from SS. Then I'll move to SE Asia. I'll have $550k cash throwing about $2000/mo interest. That's a good income in SE Asia. At 70 I take SS at $3800 (today's dollars) so $5800/mo. That's a lot of income in SE Asia. Great hospitals, great climate, many travel places to explore close by. For me being a single man the dating will be crazy good. Might even marry again. There are different ways to retire.

Cancel the cable tv, the haircut, the lottery and the newspaper. Keep the internet. You won't even miss them after the first month and you can get the news on phone and library. Lots of cheap streaming tv options (I pay for March Madness and Tour de France and some college football and it is reasonable on the specials). My wife has given me haircuts since Pandemic. Payback on Amazon clippers is 2 haircuts. Thank you for the videos. Very illuminating! Good luck to you!!

A little saving goes a long way. If you were able to trim your expenses by just 10%, you'd save an average of $400 every month, nearly $5000 a year. Invest that money instead. I realize some expenses can't be reduced but most of these can...and some by more than 10%. An extra $5000 each year feels amazing!

I'm only 45 years old. However, I'm starting to think about what my retirement will look like in my not too distant future. I'm a single Canadian federal employee and I will be able to retire with my full pension at 58 (probably 57 if I buy back some time.) My mortgage will be paid off by then, so I'm starting to realize that I could live quite comfortably with just my pension, even though it will amount to 70% of the average of my best 5 years of salary. I have a mid range job, not too little, not too much. I have nothing saved up at the moment. I just got a promotion, so I will focus on paying off my credit line, then start saving in order to have a comfortable nest egg in case of emergency. I've recently started a budget. I want to learn to use my money frugally and with intention. I've been irresponsible with money in the past. It's time for me to wise up 😊

I know you said that your home insurance is $50 a month, if you pay by the month for car ins., house ins., and property taxes, you are incurring "service fees" for the "luxury" of being able to pay monthly instead of a year or six months at a time. I checked mine and I was paying $120 to have that monthly payment "luxury"!! I think you said you were $68 dollars in the hole last month, with just paying yearly or every 6 months you can make up quite a bit of that deficit. Be vigilant of service fees eating your money that could be spent elsewhere! On all your Insurances and other bills! It migh take some time to build up where you can pay things yearly or every six months but it will be well worth it when you can spend that service fee money on other things! You are doing a fantastic job of dialing down on each budget item but this is another way to save! I know $120 a year doesn't sound like much but it all adds up!! If you take care of your pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves!! There is no downside to cutting cable and TRYING sling, if you don't like it then you can go back to what you had and seeing you quit the cable company they will offer you a good deal to come back, so there is no negative! The same goes for your cell phones, try the new thing and the old company will offer you a deal to come back, so there is no negative! When you constantly stay with the same company for tv, internet and phone they have no incentive to give you a deal, once you quit using them THEN they offer the good deal to get you back! You can even call your current providers for tv, internet and phone and say to them that you have found a better deal elsewhere and they WILL give you a better deal to stay with them!! Try It, I bet it works! Tell them you are newly retired and have to cut costs and you found another company that will be cheaper...they will be falling all over themselves to give you a better deal to keep you as a customer! Coffee pods are a big waste of money, you are paying 50 to 60 cents or more for a cup of coffee that if you made coffee the regular way that would cost about 10 cents per cup! If you and your wife have 2 cups of coffee each per day, so 4 cups a day between the two of you, you are taliking and extra $584 to $730 a year ro have your coffee! What could you pay for that $584 or $730 extra that you are paying for coffee?? Lotteries are designed to keep you broke, $68 a month is $816 a year, what could you pay for that $816?? Are you winning back more than $816 a year, I bet not!! Maybe you should start tracking how much you pay into the lottery in a year compared to how much you are winning, I can guarantee you that you are not even breaking even the vast majority of the years. You might have a "lucky" year once in a blue moon but the vast majority of the years you are losing your shirt!! And you have to include ALL of your lottery expenditures not just the winning ones. You are down $10 even with winning on the lottery which means you shouldn't be relying on winning the lottery, How would have this months numbers turned out IF you didn't win the lottery?? Ask yourself how you would feel if your wife was spending that much money on lottery, gambling on whether you would make your budget or not for the month?!
@BuzzRetirementGarage

Lot's of great advice. For the phone I don't see that advertised deal any longer so if I go Mint it would probably be a long term deal. Hopefully no price increase. Coffee pods are from Costco and we get the 120 count box and buy when they have a $6 off deal. I believe it's 26 cents a pod. Years ago when I was working a guy had his wife throw all his clothes out the front door. I felt sorry for Roger. He was a supervisor in the shipping department. One Saturday I was talking with him and we had a good conversation and doing better with the sadness of his relationship with his wife. That night, he won $8 million dollars. Only saw him one time after that. There is other reasons I play the lottery, not Powerball or anything crazy like that and someday I'll do a video about those reasons. Still, your advice is spot on and I'll work on it for sure! Buzz

You might be able to if you moved to another country, or go to somewhere like Slab City. My wife could not find any work as an 30+ year experience in Mortgage Underwriting and retired at 65. I continued working till 69. I’m now retired for 3 months. What makes me sad is to go to Target, a Restaurant and see elderly people working because they have to. Interesting, thank you for the time it takes. Overseas for the sake of "gee wiz" on more common items... Cell: 18 euro for 2 full coverages. Sky (similar to Dish network) 34 euro. Home internet thus access to the spectrum of all things TV: 34 euro. Car insurances for 3 cars, akin to liability, 80 euro a month (for all 3). Gas and diesel fuel for the cars is 8 euro per gallon equivalent. Can't totalize it as it is dependent on where we go. No property taxes. No water as we're on a well. We do pay a disposal fee and trash of prolly 25 euro a month. It gets interesting with house utilities as they swing wildly. An average of 350 euro per month over a year. Heating via gas is high during the cold months, we stay warm.Level billing is not a thing here. For math inclined, a euro is $1.26 per at todays rate. Great drug coverage. $750. per year / per person for food. $150 cash per year for over the counter drugs. Co pays for specialists visit. Was diagnosed with Afib one year ago. So far the plan has paid great. Monthly premium is zero.

Some of these expenses could be cut by just being thrifty. My grandparents used coupons and got tons of stuff for free including paper products. Estate or yard sales could yield cheaper pet stuff and misc. items.

I was caught off guard when my gas rate rose (automatically renewed) without my noticing (in Ohio). Apparently it was renewed in December, but I swear I didn’t see the notice in the mail. Definitely wasted some money there, but got it corrected this past week by canceling and going to the gas company’s standard offer.

Great video, funny! You’re doing a good job keeping on track with your budget. I called AT&T and told them about our financial situation with getting laid off and the kind lady went through all the line items, many that I didn’t even know what they meant. My bill is for 3 cell phones. The rep cut my phone bill from $190/mo to $136/mo and no change happened to my service! So look out for unnecessary fees/charges.

Enjoyed the video. Two comments. Why have you not included your KZbin income monthly? I subscribed and liked because I enjoy the down home logic and wanted to help out. Secondly, do you donate to any charities? I donate to the local food bank to help those who are less fortunite in my area. I also donate to the three local PBS stations, again because I think it helps people in my area who can't assist but depend on the programming. Okay, an OBTW. Use cash back credit cards to pay for your purchases. Jan-March I've gotten back $410. Just a thought. Have a wonderful Easter. Hopefully with family. Retired Jarhead out. Thank you for watching and commenting! I don't include any KZbin income or interest from savings etc. because I don't want to complicate the data. Keep it simple. SS income in, expenses out. Period. The other income is just icing. I keep forgetting to mention charity. We write checks in November. You'll see it on Novembers update. I do use a Costco cash back credit card. $410 for three months is excellent. My ex Air Force brother will probably admonish me for Nancy too. Lol. Have a good Easter Sunday. Buzz
