yes, everyone around town seems to care so much for her, especially the kids, her family is so focused on helping around I think she really deals with the emotional side of helping, she's the one we see actually interact with people beyond them just asking for help or having a complaint of some sort. even if some interactions are kind of shitty, like the not-so-special special present that one guy got to make her feel special, it was a shitty attempt but they still tried to reach out knowing how hard it must be for her.

The dynamics of the Madrigal family really represents latino culture. The thing about latino families is we don't ever talk about the bad stuff. Latino households don't ever talk about failure and disappointment, in fact, gloating is a big part of our culture. Talk to any latino and they will say they've heard the phrase "your cousin is already in his second degree" or "your sister is getting married and you don't even have a relationship". There is no room for talking about sad things, about feeling pressure, about anxiety or anything remotely upsetting. It's bad but it really is part of the latino culture and that movie represents it perfectly... you know that they all love each other, you can clearly see that throughout the movie, but they just can't talk to each other, open their hearts to each other and really see each other. The first scene in the movie is Abuela telling the story of how they lost their home, and that's a very real thing people suffered because of the armed conflict between the narcos, military and armed forces..it's horrible, so many people forced to leave their home and land or else they'd be murdered. It's also interesting because in the first sequence when seeing the story Abuela tells, it's toned down and short, not conveying much of the emotional trauma (probably because mirabel was so young) but in the last few scenes where its shown it goes over their whole story, it implies the gruesome murder and even that she had to watch it happen to him. It shows her breaking down in a sort of prayer and the miracle forming before panning over to her staring off in a room (probably in shock). I love how this movie digs so much deeper into each character’s personal problems. For Mirabel, we know she struggles with not having powers and not feeling like she belongs. But then we meet her “flawless” and “amazing” family, and we realize there’s more beneath all that. Luisa is under all this pressure, and it’s painful for Isabela to always be perfect. And you’re right about Dolores getting disturbed by some of the things she hears and Pepa definitely struggles with always having to control herself. One of my favorite interpretations of problems being caused by their powers comes from Camilo (the shape shifter), who is also my favorite character :). It’s not so obvious in the movie, but Camilo is said to not know who he truly is and not having that sense of self since he’s constantly changing between different people.

Almost everyone in "We don't talk about Bruno" is an adult before he left, so they remember some personal experience with bruno. Camilo probably doesn't remember much about Bruno, just that his tio that seemed to make bad things happen. Because of this, his verse kind of seemed like he was telling a scary story. The seven feet tall thing is pretty accurate for a child’s estimate of an adults height (though when he turns into Bruno he isn’t much taller than mirabel) I also like the theory that Camilo accidentally saw Bruno in the kitchen or something when he was older and when Bruno called out his name in surprise , Camilo just passed out. “When he calls your name it all fades to black “ (not my theory though)

All of the gifted families members are expected to have their entire life and personality be ONLY their gift. Luisa can't make mistakes, rest, or be gentle because she's the strong unbreakable warrior. Isabella has to be perfect every second of every day with no mistakes, not a hair out of place or a decision made that doesn't reflect perfection, grace, beauty, and delicate femininity in every breath. Pepa can't be anything but sunny and cheerful so that no one is inconvenienced by her emotions. Julieta has to be nurturing and maternal at every moment and even going to bat for one of her kids is frowned upon because she's expected to be a mother to the entire valley and therefore can't "play favorites" with her own children. etc etc. And then there's Mirabel who didn't GET a gift at age 5. What brought everyone here to begin with was a sudden tragedy that cost them nearly everything. Mirabel is scolded and belittled every time she isn't being invisible in the background because her very existence reminds everyone how fragile their happiness and safety truly is and that once again devastation could hit them with no warning. They've forgotten that the miracle was the continued survival of their family and the people they lead and protect. The magic gifts were only meant to be tools to facilitate that survival but they're instead treating the magic gifts like they are the end goal of the miracle and the people who have them are merely vessels for the magic.

It’s talking about the grandma’s past trauma when her family was displaced and her husband dies protecting the village and the miracle blessed her with a new home and second chance after she lost everything. And how she takes this power and becomes too tough to prevent future trauma but now she has to change again to repair the damage of generational trauma. It’s honestly the saddest song.

Violence is an integral part of our identity and culture, being that of the spanish colonizers that slaughtered the native communities, the political turmoil from the early 20 century (which i suspect is the time frame for the Abuela's story) or the guerilla and paramilitarism that ensued from that. So many stories like this one of families and whole communities that had to run away from home trying to find shelter and in the process the are faced with brutality, death and loss, but still had to find strength to move on. I think that, regardless of actual birth order (although the oldest as third parents is very common and is absolutely a huge burden that should not be placed on a child) it's generally the 'reliable' people in the family who end up crushed like that. For me, I high key relate, my parents are/were disabled, my father died, so all four of us were forced to carry a lot more than we ever should've. There's definitely a lot of resentment towards the others who get to shirk their responsibilities, whether that's by leaving (my oldest siblings who are almost a decade older but also didn't have any of the support or hand-me-downs we got) versus the one/ones who are forced to stay because nobody else will. If you're around, and want to help, then you end up doing the lion's share of the work with no breathing room, especially when your parents have (purposefully or not) treated you badly. Everyone needs so much more support than they ever received, because there's only so many hours in a day. You either take care of the others or you take care of yourself and there's just not enough room to do both.

dos Oruguitas is a healing song I think. It's during a sad part but it's like the grandma process of facing her past - both the painful and the beautiful part, and figure out how to let go. The 2nd half of the song is kind of a happy resolution after it all.

My favorite lines in surface pressure are “give it to your sister, it doesn’t hurt, and see if she can handle every family burden” and “give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would’ve pulled you under” Those two lyrics speak a lot to how I felt for a long time within my friend group, and I know it’s a little different than being that way with your family, but I lost a lot of friends when I stopped being the person who would get walked all over so others would be happier, so her loved ones encouraging her to carry less hits me so hars

talking about "waiting on a miracle" another detail that Lin Manuel Miranda (who wrote the songs) talked about in an interview is that while other songs have a 4/4 tempo, this song has a 3/4 tempo because Mirabel feels out of beat compared to the rest of the family. that made me appreciate this song so much and that's why it's one of my favorites

IF YOU LISTEN CAREFULLY “the family Madrigal” and “Waiting on a miracle” have the same melody! We Don’t Talk About Bruno is so goddamn good because it perfectly encapsulates both why the family has shunned Bruno and why their reasons are, upon inspection, mostly pretty bad. You hear everybody give their personal anecdotes for how Bruno’s predictions or behavior have in some way screwed them over, but when you actually think about what they’re saying, most of it is either unfairly attributing intent on Bruno’s part or someone just assuming he’s bad because he’s extremely awkward and reclusive. Like, what has Bruno really done wrong, according to these stories? Pepe says that Bruno told her it was gonna rain on her wedding day, and as a result of her growing anxiety at the thought, her powers caused it to rain. Not only would Bruno have no way of knowing that it would be his sister who caused it to rain (his power isn’t exactly watching a point-for-point reel of how something happens, he just sees the ultimate result), but his intentions for telling her were almost certainly good. “Oh, looks like there’s gonna be some unexpected rain, better go tell everyone so they can bring umbrellas.” Dolores says that she can always hear him mumbling and fumbling, in general being a reclusive, socially withdrawn person at all times. So, in other words…Bruno is awkward. And that’s it. Camilo’s basically the same in that he describes Bruno like he’s some kind of evil Disney warlock. Seven foot frame, fades to black, feasts on your screams…he’s a goofy kid making stuff up about this person he doesn’t really know, in the same way kids would imagine the reclusive old neighbor living on top of the hill alone is actually secretly a vampire or a witch. And again, you inspect each of these examples individually and see them for what they are: superfluous misunderstandings. But the brilliant part is when you get to the end, where everybody’s parts are sung all at once. Now, where there was once easily answered issues with no real bad deed at the heart of them is this cacophony of bad impressions of who this man is. You can maybe focus on an individual line still, but it’s nonetheless just absorbed by the rest all playing out at once. That’s how this kind of social isolation happens, through this nigh indecipherable cavalcade of stories and rumors. It’s so well done, probably one of the best songs Disney’s put out in a long time.
@Nijilove782 жыл бұрын
I imagine Bruno became awkward after growing up with this gift that caused his family and townspeople to view him negatively. He cares about his family a lot despite these ideas and he eventually decides to leave because if his mom found out about his vision of Mirabel, she would just see the negative which would have ostracized her or even had her casted out to prevent it happening
@hopsymopsy83522 жыл бұрын
All but Camillo I agree with, he wasn't just making stuff up for attention or to scare. You have to remember he left when Mirabel was a child child, and Camillo is only 15 so he had to have been at MOST 5 when he last saw the man. In his mind his memories are distorted due to his perspective being altered by his age. As a kid Bruno probably seemed incredibly tall and scary because a kid isn't going to understand social awkwardness. And tbh, Camillo cant be blamed for having a negative impact on Bruno because of how little and naive he was, the real driving force of isolation for him was the adults around him who blamed him for his actions when they well knew it wasnt his fault
@thiefpotato27592 жыл бұрын
I disagree with your take on Camilo and Dolores. As others have mentioned, Camilo is playing this cartoony villain cuz he was portrayed as such. A child essentially representing the way that bruno was portrayed as. Dolores tbh is one of the only family members who attempted to understood Bruno. The mentioning of him mumblimg is because he is still living in the house, which no one besides her knew. She understands that his powers is a humbling experience and that he suffered because of it and how his family couldn't emotionally deal with his powers. I think it gives a sense of irony of "not talking about bruno". The shunning of bruno and not discussing of Bruno because when they did explain themselves, they seem to come off as ignorant and childish. It also upholds the premise of encanto.

I don't cry at things, but I was choking back tears when I saw this in theaters and heard surface pressure. It summed up so well what I felt as the oldest in a single-parent household, you're expected to take up the role of the second parent and help mom cope and keep up with school and since everyone in your house depends on you it really feels like you have to carry the world on your shoulders, like you are solely responsible for the wellbeing of your entire family and to admit to feeling strained or pressured would let them down or devalue you. The line "always walking alone, always wanting for more, like I'm still at that door longing to shine like all of you shine" is my favourite line. I'm not going to give any spoilers, but the door is actually not a metaphor. When the members of the family receive their gift it involves a door, so she is actually talking about a physical door. Another thing, after Surface Pressure you were talking about how "the aunt who can control the weather has to always be happy" and you're completely right. There are various times throughout the movie where she isn't happy and has a little thunder cloud above her head only to be scolded by her mother. The amount of times you hear "Pepa, calm down" in that movie makes me incredibly sad. Because of her gift she isn't allowed to feel any type of emotion other than happiness and it makes me really sad. The good thing tho is that the guy she married, Felix, never scolds her for being upset, he just tries to help her calm down, and he even stands up for her when she's being scolded by her mother. She definitely picked the right guy.

For me (as a Latine individual) this movie reminded me so much of my family. My grandma and and grandpa immigrated over and the pressure for the kids to learn English, to translate for them, and pretend to be perfect because they had enough to deal with within society hit so close to home. It's definitely a defense mechanisms immigrant families learn to help almost assimilate that can cause generational trauma. Be perfect so the neighbors don't talk about our family, don't give them a reason to say we should "go back to where we came from". It's a movie that is making a lot of the younger generation try to have these talks with their families which I think is just amazing. It's such a good movie, I've watched it at least 4 times now and I cried each time.

Honestly the best lyric in surface pressure is “give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would’ve pulled you under” cause when you give a problem to someone else to handle you just expect them to handle it no problem, but the reason you gave it to them was because you couldn’t handle it yourself, and it just really makes you think
