Highly recommend you guys buy an MSD ignition unit and potentially ignition transistor unit to solve your issue. With the MSD ignition you will also need the MSD tach adapter just fyi for the tachometer to work. The 280z units were ment to work with the fuel injection ecu, not carburated.
@texaspowerman2 жыл бұрын
Have fun with those Webber itbs. I had 2 of them to tune and balance. Arcane doesn’t describe it. There is a balance tool that actually sits on the diaphragm with a pointer in the center to balance the air flow between ports and between bodies. We used to use a clear spark plug to adjust the a/f mixture by the color of the flame in each cylinder. On a ported and polished 4 cylinder head it would idle smooth at 500 rpm. Leather pouch with your jet sets and adjusting tools. Much fun, it’s art. Then you get to play with the distributor weights and springs to adjust the advance curve. Electronic ignition and fuel injection was the best thing that happened to those gen motors. Bad cap or points in the distributor. Timing could be way off so the coil isn’t in sink with the points so the points aren’t aren’t cycling with the coil. If you have spark at the coil but not at the plug it’s out of sync. The cap quench’s the arc on the points so it could be shorted, they go bad and should be replaced every 5k miles. Welcome to 5,000 mile tune ups. It’s all mechanical.
@djimg12 жыл бұрын
You cannot run an 260z or 280z (electronic) distributor without the ignition control module and a transistor ignition unit. You need a 240z or 280zx mechanical/points distributor to work with your set-up
@djimg12 жыл бұрын
Also, make sure to have the tach connected.

To add to this, the ignition modules for the 280s are hard to come by and are usually dead on arrival if you find one. GM HEI module from a late 80s camero is what I used instead of the ignition module. Cheap and available. Just look up HEI conversion for 280z and it should fire once the dizzy is set close to 10-12 degrees on the timing light.

In doing many complete rewires and engine and trans swaps.. grounds are easy to miss.. especially if you didn’t know they were there from before.. Check to make sure you have the block and trans grounded to the chassis and the chassis is grounded correctly to the battery.. as you need a complete path for power to ground to start the vehicle. If you have spark coming out of the coil it is grounded correctly.. however the block might not be.. or the trans since it is connected to the block. Hope this helps! 🤙

Make sure your ground wires are properly grounded, I had a problem when doing my my L-28 swap , the ground wires weren’t making contact and ending up frying the distributor.

Your best dizzy is the 1,2,3, brand distributor you can tune it in your phone app. The distributer you want is a ZX it has the ignition module bolted to the side of the dizzy. Also wether you use a ballast resistor or not is important.

Had similar issue, was getting spark into distributor but not out to the individual spark plug wires. My issue was bad pick-up coil inside the distributor. Once I replaced that with new one from the parts store, it fired right up. Might want to check that out.

Start swirches of the era powered the distributor seperatelt in the on position and the start position ofvthe ignition switch. Had to do with the ballast resistor in the On psn while it was bypassed in the start position. So just give the dizzy a direct 12+ to test

Should try starter fluid to "prime" it. Pull out a spark plug that's still plugged up to a wire, crank it and see if it gets spark.

all a distro needs is + and - to the coil. rather run a + direct to coil and check spark on plug 1 and 4 if there spark bob your uncle that applies to points and condenser. if electronic then spark distro is control by module which i use T100 for any carb setup. but tim said his getting spark at the coil wire so the distro cap or rotor is faulty

If you’re getting spark from the coil to the dizzy, it’s possible that the issue is something simple like corrosion inside the cap. Either on the rotor, or the underside of the connectors for the spark plug leads. Corrosion is annoying with older ignition systems

Hopefully the pump is not pushing a ton of fuel to the carbs. A mechanical fuel pump can be used which is installed on the passenger side of the head. A electric pump can be used as long as its about 4lbs of fuel I think not a whole lot. A stock 280z will push about 40lbs of fuel. Spark Fuel Timing are essential!

I’m one of those mixed personalities. I have a JZX100 Chaser daily, but my race car is a 67 Mercury Cougar. I’ve worked on carbureted cars most of my life and the next thing I would check is the coil. If you have fire there, re adjust the points in the distributor. If it’s not a points style and it’s got the ignition module instead, then that could be it too. If no fire at the coil, make sure the coil is getting power. If it is, then swap the coil.
