Trying Van Gogh oil pastels - are they better / worse or same as Paul Rubens or Pentel oil pastels

I got myself the Van Gogh 60 set after trying the Pentels first. The smell of the Pentel ones didn't bother me that much (they do smell), but I hated how hard some colours were, especially the red and orange. So when I came across some of the Van Gogh at a local art store, I bought them to expand my collection and replace my white that now has been reduced to crumbs. I found them way more pleasant than the Pentel and when I found the full set for less than 24 euros, I immediately got them and I still use this set regularly.

A good review, thank you. It is pretty consistent with my experience with them as well. The Pentel, yes they do stink like chemical waste! I threw mine away because of it. For some reason many on youtube rarely talks about art materials that smell bad. I have had some unpleasant experiences with products I have seen good reviews on, but that smell quite horrible, and no one ever said a word about it. So thank you for mentioning that part.

Air them outside on a nice day. The smell goes away eventually. Pentels are great. I must have them in my stash. Again, the smell goes away eventually. :)

the colourless one is a mixer

I have these, and they are decent mid-price with their quality. I agree with the metallic ones, they are bad. If they can't make proper gold and silver, don't add them! The colourless one is for blending without using your finger. I'd rather have more light blues and greens.
