Why are TikTok hacks, so strange sometimes? So I decided to try some viral TikTok sewing hack videos. I decided to tackle how to make pleats with a fork, how to make a rolled hem easily, how to turn a piece of fabric, and unsurprisingly, how to fix a sewing pattern.

Instead of trying hacks, people need to read their manual and carefully look through all of the random stuff that they're "never going to use" that came with the sewing machine. Because there's a good chance there's a proper way and a tool for it that you already have.

I make girls sun dresses for charity and add pockets and a ruffle out of coordinating fabric. For years I did a gathered ruffle but switched to fork pleating a few years ago. It is so fast! Really a game changer. I don’t use 3 times the fabric - more like 2 times and leave some space between the pleats. The dresses don’t need 3 X pleating as long as the girls have plenty of room to move.

Material culture approach to the sewing world the Grannies were swimming in? "Hey folks, wanna new car, why here - have a set of sewing needles for the Little Lady". BTW… you can turn a tube way easier than that. Take a boba straw, drop the sewn end of the tube of fabric inside the straw, once you pull it almost all the way through, take the open end of the fabric and fold it over the straw and just pull the fabric down and over the straw until it’s completely inside out and out of the straw

I’ll stick to my $5 hemmer foot (have them for every machine from 1907 onwards). Also, same for my ruffler foot instead of a fork. I think the straw thing didn’t work because they used a GIANT straw. Missed you! I’d love the story of how you broke your wrist. I managed to break mine falling off the first step of a two-step stepladder while painting. My thought on the way down was, damn, this is gonna hurt.

When my grandma downsized she didn't need her big sewing machine anymore, so I claimed it as no one else wanted it. It's a Bernina 730 record from the 60's. She keeps trucking, no major issues, since I've had it, and is what did most of my cosplay sewing on. She is my workhorse now, the main machine I use.

I usually use fork pleats when I make 18th century type skirts so I just do the width of fabric and use the selvage as my side seams, attach a waistband to each side and use the excess layered over each other as the pocket hole!

Okay, Stephanie: find your machines’s extension table. It is useful for most sewing. Then check out your mess of feet because one of them is likely set for feeding elastic through. I absolutely admire and encourage your sense of adventure, but am slightly concerned that you don’t know the advantages provided by your machine. Can’t help you there, because I have a Janome, but we all know that modern machines offer pretty much the same features and are so much more helpful than the straight stitch single foot marvels used in many sewing hack videos. And yeah, what’s with the tomato?

That 2nd hack would also work well if you are doing an extra wide hem that isn't on your sewing plate. But I'd 2 of them in that case, 1 before & 1 behind to keep the hem even (ymmv). For the goat? Guillaume.

There are turning kits that are essentially the same as that straw and chopstick. But the cylinder has to be big enough for the cloth tube. I was surprised yours worked as well as it did, since the straw seemed like more of a spagetti strap size. Also, my understanding was that fork pleating was fairly common, especially in the 60's or so?

I use fork pleats for the ruffles around the bottom of petticoats. if the hem is already 100+ inches, and I'm pleating a ruffle on to it that will only be seen when i try to jump a puddle, then fork > math. if i'm at a 3x ruffle to hem ratio i don't space them out. and 2x ish, i space them a fork width, and in between, you just eyeball.

Didn't your Bernina come with a small, plastic, table that slides on? Mine came with one (which is broken on one side now). I love that goat. Our Dollar Tree did not have any of the items I went in there to buy (the last two times I shopped there). The good stuff must be sent to Dollar Trees not in Eastern Kentucky. Never put tape on a pattern tissue. The tape will damage the tissue paper. I lost the screw off one of my Bernina feet also. I know what you are talking about; but I don't have one either (I use a safety pin to turn the tubes).

I feel for you with the hand. Some years ago, I broke the ankle on my right foot. I learned to drive with my left foot out of necessity. I was put into a boot no cast on my birthday in Dec. for Christmas and my birthday, I was given a new sewing machine. I learned to use my left foot on the pedal. I didn't have a sewing table with the knee pedal. I have a very narrow turn hem foot. Since my machine has a screw for some feet and one foot the feet pop on and off to change them it works for this foot and other very old feet I have found over the years. It is not easy to start the fabric into that rolled hem foot and I am thinking that the paper one might work for me better when I don't need such a small hem( the foot makes a rolled hem such as is used on ladie's hankies.) I will probably try the hook at the 5/8 mark as my machine does not have one nor does it have a hole to use the old guide that I still have. Love the goat

Fork pleats are a hack? I've always used a fork for 1inch pleats. I thought fork and knife(use a butter knife! makes roughly half inch pleats) pleats were just a vintage trick, not a modern hack. My grandma taught me those. My grandma taught me I could adjust a fork pleat by using different prongs too.
