We hit something leaving the Little River Inlet and bent our shaft and a prop. We got hauled out for repairs at Southport Marina.

Ed and Lyn - it’s all about the journey many of us have had bent shafts damaged props saved others from disasters etc, we learn - “if we haven’t made any mistakes we haven’t learnt anything “ I am in Ocean City NJ and just winterised my friends boat after a great Thanksgiving in Bucks County Chalfont, oh my I don’t need to eat or drink for a while !- I drove the boat on the ICW wow great fun but many shallow areas to be aware of - wanted desperately to catch up with you guys during this trip however not to be this time - will be back again, so will try again next time, I’ll enjoy the next few days here in Ocean City NJ then off to LA then Aus. - Best and Kind Regards to you both following as always, David - Australia

Chalfont is very close to our land home. We winterized our Carver last week. We do not do much with the Hatteras, since we keep it heated and use block heaters all winter. We have put over 4000 miles on the boat, so I guess hitting ground twice is not too bad. See you next time!

When I was a lot younger I was told a story about a passenger ship (ex freighter) that hit a sub with it's single screw. Both the ship and the sub survived although the ships single screw was minus one blade.

Ed & Lyn if I would have known you were in Myrtle I would have given you a lift to downtown for free since I live 5 minutes from Grand Dunes Marina. I keep my Hatteras in Coquina Harbor there where the black and white lighthouse is on the ICW. A tip for navigating the Little River Inlet is to head straight out directly towards the sea buoy then just before the buoy make your turn. There is heavy shoaling all along where you indicated the impact. Glad to hear you were well taken care of in Southport!

The miracle was the presence of a replacement prop shaft. If I had a boat that I was doing any long distance traveling with, I'd make darn sure to always at least one spare prop and a spare shaft for each side.

I always give the end of a rock jetty a lot of room. I'm guessing you found the end of it where it's not quite as high up as the rest of it. But, don't feel bad, you have a lot of company. We have a jetty like that down here, and I'm really surprised the insurance companies haven't just gone ahead and marked it themselves. It would save them a lot of money.

.... and that is why when we ran the ICW, we always carried a spare shaft and a set of matched props ... just in case ... if fact we still have ( what is left ) of a bent bronze shaft in the garage that we have been using for "material" for various projects ... so it is still useful ...

we hit something in san diego. insurance is a curse most of the time, but when it comes time to collect on prop, shaft AND motor mount.... it was a blessing. the wife happened to be driving the boat at the time, small favors, otherwise we would be discussing that disaster every 4th of july, labor day, thanksgiving, christmas and easter holiday... :) our work cost us a small fortune, even with insurance. and we have no idea what it was, but it sounded metallic, was in the channel and across from the USN sub base in San Diego Harbor.

Dang sorry for your luck. While dock master at a boat club I was gassing up their boats and one day going to gas the boats I took the Welcraft to get filled. It was a single screw 25 footer rental. I was with a fellow dock master. Well once we rounded the corner there was a freighter trudging it ways around a corner. I rounded the corner and hit reverse right away. The water was really shallow there. So as I was going back at like walking speed I hit something in the water and broke the skeg off the bottom of the IO unit. I offered to pay but the manager gave me mercy. Lucky me. Just trying to say it happens to everyone. We had incidents where the captains that join the people renting the boat hit stuff behind the break wall so basically S#$T happens. LOL. Sorry I forgot to say I hit a piece of deadwood. The freighter pulled up from the muck and pushed it back then I hit it.

Over the years I found out that more times than not when you hit something to bend a prop that bad that more times than not you will also bend the shaft I agree with some others that the diver should of been able to find the bent shaft that was a pretty good bend not to find it. I'M sorry for you guys I hate that your chart was not reading correctly up here on the river after hard rains that causes the river to rise it picks up debris off the banks and logs will get water logged and float a few inches to a couple of feet below the surface I hit one more than once in my day dinging props and bending shafts we called them dead head logs you can't see them and you will think you are in clear water going down the river in the channel and all of a sudden you hit something and look behind you and you this huge log come floating up then it disappears under the surface again. I always make it a point when I exit a inlet to go out at least a half a mile before I turn in the direction I want to go. Most inlet's have terrible shoaling problems at their mouths

Yep, Jetty's are designed to change the way inlets naturally fill in with sand. And, that sand has to be trapped somewhere. Charts can't get upgraded fast enough. Stay in the channel and go way out before you turn.

I was about 35 miles east of Port Canaveral going about 40knots. We hit a submerged door about 15 inches under water. Bent both props, Couldnt see it at all. Hado limp the 32' cc back to Port at knots. Worked out well, cause we trolled the whole way in and caught a variety of fish (mahi-mahi, kingfish, cobia,) all and all, gpod times despite to fucked up props. Didnt ruin shafts or seals or anything. Just had to replace props!

FYI, another hazard to watch out for in the open ocean is/are shipping containers that have fallen (or been jettisoned) off cargo ships. Some have the tendency to float just under the surface.

I don't understand how your spare prop shaft were for only one side and there was a 50/50 chance of it working. I can see props if you have counter rotating props but the shafts should be the same. Also a little shocked how easy your props turn (by hand) without resistance from your cutlass bearings.

Perhaps you are right. It does not make sense for the prop and the shaft to be reverse threaded. I am only going by what the guys at the boat yard said. It would explain why I only have one spare shaft on board.

That is correct. We are very careful to look for no-wake signs, and even if we do not see them, we do not pass boats at dock at anything but idle.

@Wake Me Adventures Great idea. I did not know this app existed. I have been away from boating for some time now. I was a marine mechanic for many years before retirement. I worked at Derecktor Gunnell in Ft Lauderdale along with Lauderdale Prop right next door. I think it's just called Derecktor Shipyards now as I have been gone for many years and now live in a landlocked city out west. . All the new marine electronics are something else now. I would would have loved to have work with them. Back in the early eighty's , they sent me from Derecktor, next door to Lauderdale Prop, (they had designs on buying them out to expand the yard), to set up a program to use Lasers to target prop shafts. It was all new back then. I was trained and had worked with Lasers in the Military and I was the only person they had at the time that knew anything about them. These days with GPS and new nonmilitary Sonar and Radar technology's, makes it a great time to be working in the Marine Outfitting and repair business. The only problem I see with all the new gadgets is, it puts too many morons on the water with more money than brains. There is no substitute for good old fashion seamanship.

I would imagine you were supposed to account for your draft when programming the Navionics app. Issues like that always occur between the keyboard and the chair. Yes, this was a separate incident. The cutlass bearing was caused by shoaling in the ICW that was not shown on the charts.

I still don't understand why some props are left exposed to groundings and large debris. This boat has a bit of a keel which should help but I see trawlers with keels designed lower than the props and a heavy iron keel shoe running from the bottom end of the keel to the rudder post. This would help deflect a large sunken object away from the prop. Maybe I am overlooking something.

No, I never found out why it sunk. It was in a slip, underwater, when we arrived at the marina.

Only an un experienced or dishonest diver would miss that one. I hope they changed both sets of cutlass bearings after turning those wheels with that much wobble. He will be very lucky if there is no vibration without re targeting the shafts either. That thing took quite a hit.

Yes, there is a coupler halfway down the shaft. We were lucky and had a spare starboard shaft on board.

Good thing it was a Hatteras and not some other cheaper built boat. I've seen other boats rip the strut right off (or push it through) and put a hole in the bottom. That was a serious impact to bend an large diameter shaft. The strut must have taken the brunt of the force to bend it right there.

Yes, he probably should have noticed. The shaft could be swapped underwater since it is a two-piece coupled shaft. However, we did not know what was damaged, so we had the boat hauled out.

Trying Not To Sink don’t have the shaft straightened! The shaft will slowly regain its bent shape. Experienced this many times when the owners were too cheap to buy a new shaft and ended up spending just as much in shipping the shaft and having it straightened than it would’ve cost to replace the shaft in the first place. Then they had to buy a new shaft once the old shaft regained its bend!

With 8V-92TA Detroits you should ONLY be using straight SAE 40 weight oil. Using 15W-40 oil will significantly reduce the longevity of your engines. 2 stroke Detroits need to ONLY run straight SAE 40 CF-2 rated oil!!!!

We use Delo 100, straight 40. If I bought something else it was emergency backup because they did not sell anything else or it was for the generator. I do not recall. You would be surprised how hard it is to find 40W, especially the low ash Delo 100, while on the water. Almost no marinas stock it and I usually have to find a West Marine.

I am a tax accountant who only works during the tax season until April 15th. Lyn is a retired photographer. We also own some rental properties which is really the key. The properties will provide for our retirement so we are free to spend our income as we wish.

I couldn’t help but notice you holding a 15w-40 oil jug, I am assuming that’s for the genny? Your engines need SAE 40 or 50 straight weight Delo 100, Shell Rotella T-1, or if you want full synthetic, then Schaefer makes a straight weight 40 formulated for Detroit Diesels. Detroit put out a TSB several years ago advising that their two-stroke engines aren’t designed for multi grade oil - the tolerances are too tight and the air vents in the liners shear it down prematurely. It will result in liner scuffing and greatly accelerated ring wear. I’m guessing you probably know this but wanted to be better safe than sorry.

Yes, I am aware of that. I use Delo 100, unless it is an emergency. Some of the other devices on the boat can used the 15w-40. I was not aware that Rotella T-1 was okay. That is good to know. Unfortunately, Delo 100 costs almost twice the price of Delo 400.

glad to see your propeller was not bent! why not replace this shaft yourself? I can see the coupler right there, the repair looks easy and straightforward am i missing something? will they not let you repair your own boat? i dont know your finances or skill level maybe im just to tight with my wallet to pay a mechanic to remove a propeller nut and some 9/16 bolts? hope you made it to your party!

The propeller was bent. The diver replaced it before we found out the shaft was bent. The yard we were at was not a DYI yard. We try to do almost all the work on the boat ourselves but we were under the gun and had time constraints.

Quite the contrary. Bad luck would have been if the strut got pushed through the hull! Keep in mind we put 4000 miles on the boat and hit bottom twice. We try to look on the bright side. :-)

The Captain who crows about never hitting bottom is the one who's boat never leaves the dock. My dad and I brought my 41 Chris back to Boston from Ft. Lauderdale on her own bottom back in 2003. As we were stopped one evening having beers at the tiki bar in Oriental NC. a young lady asked how our trip was going, before I could answer her my dad replied "great, we've hit everything but the lottery on the way". I never laughed so hard but it was oh so true. The ICW can be tough.

It cost $1800 for the haul out and replacement for the prop and shaft. However, I had spare parts aboard. It would have cost about $1000 more if I had to have the shaft and props repaired. I am doing that this winter. The diver cost $350.

i will love to have a hybrid electric dissel generator/electric jetboat live on boardz yachts like yours but otherwise ill go with a smaller beem but a sail! more survivable at high seas and far more range like trans-atlantic or pacific ocean worthy for relativaly cheap, just knowlage look at that old man going solo from cali to hawaii. still yours is nice the way you lkve it.

Unfortunately those big diesel engines are noisy. But like everything else in life if you enjoy the experience is part of the thrill. I am sure after a while you wont even notice the noise. Maybe in the near future as batteries evolve it will make sense to get a quiet solar electric boat. Right now you can get one for $1.5 millions if you wish. ;0

@@mrbob9556 My point was, they don't have to be noisy at all. The boat designer just didn't include any exhaust mufflers which is for some insane reason very common on boats. It's the same as having your 400 000 dollar Bentley muffler and cat deleted.
