In my sodor AU Only 2 cathedrals were built In 1947. 8000. And 8001. They were both built As prototypes. 8000 had 2 cylinders while 8001 was experimentally fitted with 3. Although this was later removed when British railways Was formed. They were both withdrawn in 1966. But both are preserved 8000 is owned by the National railway museum. 8001 went to sodor. In 1967. And became part of the Vickerstown railway museum. If you're wondering why 2 were only built That's because British railways was not interested in building more. Because the cathedrals although were very powerful and efficient And reliable. We're actually quite expensive to build by the great Western.

This is a beautiful model. Not sure if what if models are a way to go. There are so many steam locos that actually existed and not modelled. The preview certainly inclines me to buy it. It is a shame that it does not come with a few scenarios though.

Would be bloody good if your model 8025 makes it into TDRS one day, but I doubt it very much unless there's a back story like Zeke found a set of blueprints or frames to build one.
@DDJP3 жыл бұрын

8025 is probably going to replace 257 Squadron come the 1990's since the locomotive arrived on the swanage railway in the year 1990 and is now currently on the spa valley railway. So maybe Zeke will sell 257 to a heritage society and will have 8025 built to help with the workload on the DR after 257's departure from the railway.

Is it normal that I really want to a Hornby LMS Princess Royal and a GWR King class, modify the Princess a little bit repaint it into a GWR livery, BR livery or a custom livery and give it new name plates and number to get a custom cathedral model or is it just me? Cause honestly I really love the Cathedrals' model. They are absolutely gorgeous.

You said there were only 20 engines built from 8000 - 8019? Right, when why does that engine at 9:24 have the number 8025?

There are 20 engines in the main pack (No.8000 - 8019). However, the backers each received their own exclusive nameplate and number - hence 8025 'Walschurch Cathedral'.

It is just possible that GWR would have built an express locomotive without the brass safety valve bonnet but it is far more likely that the design would have been altered before building the prototype. Also that ugly, redundant steam dome would never have remained. Just look at the real 1000 County class that was introduced after the fictional Cathedral class.

Single Blast-Pipe(?), Inside Valve Gear, Inadequate Cab, No Cab Doors, Hand Fired, Driving Wheels too Large for the Stated Purpose of Climbing the Devon Banks Single Headed. This is a fantastic simulation of a locomotive which the GWR were wise not to build: a difficult-to-service and repair, fireman killer which would have been obsolete the day it left Swindon Works. The BR Standard Class 8 71000 was the correct solution was steam to have a future in Britain… and it looks a lot better than this Edwardian throw-back!
@DDJP3 жыл бұрын
Oh.
@shroomzed29473 жыл бұрын
So your proposed solution was a locomotive reputably bad at steaming with abhorrent draughting and ashpan dimensions and design? The sketcthes of the Cathedrals definitely could have benefitted from improvements, but that’s exactly why they were just sketches that never went further. All the drawings out there are unofficial at best. I agree some GWR practices were quite perverse going into even the 1920s such as inside valve gear but I have to question your conclusion that it would have been a failure from the outset. In any case, I think a 4-8-0 would have been of more use for GWR conditions, following to an extent the excellent design of Chapelon’s 240P.

@@shroomzed2947 The Duke of Gloucester would have achieved its full potential by 1956 if attention to had been given to what were teething troubles, in the event not sorted out until the latest overhaul. In an alternative history, a couple of hundred or more would have been built and would have come out of service around ten years ago. I read somewhere that the inside valve gear was lubricated by throwing a bucket of oil over the whole lot. Presumably it was the result of standardisation practices and a desire for backwards compatibility. There is a lot to be said for not changing the design of something which works.
