I think it may have been more like a duty to serve Russia rather than all the glitz and glamor that goes with it. For instance a soldier doesn't run into enemy fire because he or she wants to see shiny bullets up close but rather to do his or her duty for their country. The Czar definitely had more glamor doing his duty but still does what he truly believes is the right thing to do at the time.
