Life continues to move on and in a way, so do you. But your heart and mind remain in one place. This is one of my favourite portrayals of this and I think it's a good representation of depressive behaviour too. Not every moment is crying; but rather feeling trapped in your mind, despite going through the motions of life.

Some specifics from the song that really hit the toughest chord... When she's dancing with that dress on, her celebrating her own birthday alone, pretending to be enjoying her cake. The instant smile she cracks with the first bite of the cake looks very unnatural, it's as if she's pretending to be happy even when she is alone; as if she isn't even secured with her own self. Or probably, through a different angle...she is pulling off a Play in her private space, pretending that she is surrounded by people, or one person maybe. And she's having an actual party, she's having a blast.... These are very unsettling moments to be portrayed this precisely in a film if you ask me...I've never seen Depression, or such a troubled mental state being portrayed this Accurately, with so much Diplomacy in films. It speaks a lot about the Actors as well... . . Personally, I don't approve on Tamasha as much, I thought it was a Descent movie, but very superficial by the end, and it simplifies a lot of subjects...specially the ones associated with Ranbir's charcater. It's a flawed film. But up until this song, this movie was just hitting another level of brilliance in portraying Human nature. Damn, it gives me chills...

Tamaasha articulated Ved's journey. The best thing about this song is not how it shows sadness in a happy tune, but also how when Deepika is in Calcutta and Delhi, the singers are somewhere in a village in Punjab. The idea of protagonists' life unravelling in Calcutta, while singers doing a commentary on it in Punjab is taken from the Greek chorus. Heer leaves Ranjha in Punjab and it is shown before the song starts. In hindi cinema, it is only the second time Greek chorus has been used. Before this, Deewane hai deewane ko nazar chahiye song in Zanjeer used a similar troupe. The colourful treatment of depression is noteworthy here.

I was in college battling depression when this movie released. This movie Ved's character felt like a mirror I felt like someone portraying me on screen. It was after this movie I wrote a journal emptying my heart out and continued the habit till date. My everyday routine in overcoming depression was watching this movie sometimes I'd just watch from the part ved revives himself.Even now when I feel low I just listen to the songs it reminds me how this movie made an impact in my life and I get up again with more force. She portrays the character's conflict in entering the library (given her promise to ranbir's character about not meeting him post Corsica). I love this song.
