On our GP 40s we ran (former GTW, nee DT&I), the "tool box" behind the cab on the fireman's side was actually a cabin air filter box. It used the same cylindrical filters as the oil filter system for the prime mover.

Yes I remembered that this morning when I was watching this video and added a note in the description about my mistake.

Excellent review! Atlas is great. I'm glad they are using LokSound 5 with the new models I have bought from them. I picked up 2 of these GP40's. Smooth and quiet runners.

NIce details and sound. Performance looks like it will be very good. Lighting looks good being golden in color.

Thanks for sharing how great these are. Atlas is really stepping up the details and yes the price but for what you are getting I think it's worth it👍👍👍

Is there a difference in design or detailling between the silver and gold series? Or is it only the DCC and Sound features? - The model looks very precise and with sharp formed plastic tools produced. In my eyes the wipers are oversized, the little engineer couldn‘t see so much behind the windowscreen.

No difference in the details, only the DCC & Sound!

Nice model! That SP paint theme is starting to grow on me every time I see it. That and SF's kodachrome scheme. I may have to pick up some of these

300 bucks and no ditch lights?

These were delivered in 1991. Ditchlights became standard in 1995.

For some reason Atlas wont do ditch lights even on their up to date paint schemes, the only one I can think of they did ditch lights on was the dash 8s, they need to step it up or I will continue not to buy them

You have to remember a lot of models are made "as delivered" so if a locomotive was purchased prior to ditch lights being the standard, or before a beacon was installed by the road, they may not reflect those details.

Lol silly. Ditch lights? Why?

What I’m saying is if you were to buy this model you are literally modeling the year the prototype was released from MK, furthermore SP was utilizing ditch lights from 93 on, even before it became FRA standard, for me personally this model had ditch lights longer than it didn’t, and in today’s market, I think it’s a big selling point. This is all my opinion and my thoughts I’m a fan of atlas, but they will have to step it up in terms of tooling and ditch lights etc to be competitive in today’s market

An excellent model of an emd gp40, i wish however that Atlas would offer more roadnames/ paint schemes from the 1960s, 70s time era.

Now what I seen wrong with this model, they were delivered after the GP60's in 1991. Buy this time railroads was removing the class lights from the locomotives. With Espee's previous orders the rear numbers did not exist. But the GP60s did not have any either. I want to say the horm may have been placed one fan too far back, but I not positive about that. If SP had a tool box it would have been located at the end of the traction motor duct. Short history behind this order. The locomotives were rebuilt by Motive Power Industries in Mountain Top PA. The units when built new (GP40s) came from several railroads like Rock Island, MKT, NYC, WP L &N, B & O. and C & O. and rebuilt as GP40M-2s.

Horrible fuel tank and air reservoir, outdated radiator grills, wrong cut lever. After my pair of Ferromex GP40-2s from them a couple of years back and my RS36 it's clear that Atlas is falling behind the competition fast and that's why they are so much cheaper on MB Klein and other sites, not worth the msrp even remotely close. On the SP this would be a GP40M, they were rebuilds from older GP40s from other roads.

This group of 7100s was rebuilt from older GP40's from various railroads by Motive Power Industries formally Morrison Knudsen.

While Atlas is at least trying to catch up with their Master Plus former BLMA hoppers, their recent announcements like the MP15DCs with road specific ditch lights is at least a step in the right direction. Hoping to see what Atlas can do to catch up with Athearn Genesis, Rapido, and Scaletrains Rivet Counter models

The only thing that stopped me from buying a model was because it still had it's class lights. The railroad was removing them by the time of the SD60s arrival. The model I wanted to buy was set for 2012, almost twenty years difference. I know it's an easy removal, but matching the paint sometimes aren't worth it.
