This presentation by master carver David A. Boxley and his son David R. Boxley was given prior to the unveiling of their monumental Tsimshian house front at SHI's Walter Soboleff Building in downtown Juneau, Alaska. The house front tells the Tsimshian story Am’ala: Wil Mangaa da Ha’lidzogat (Am’ala: He Who Holds up the Earth). At almost 40 feet wide by 15 feet high, it is thought to be the largest, carved-and-painted Tsimshian house front in the world. In the video, the Boxleys describe the house front and talk about the rules of formline, an art form shared by Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people.

I'm so struck by David's assertion of the idea of reincarnation and that "we are the old people ... and we're just continuing on these old things." That is so beautiful and strikes me in a very true, deep place. It feels so connective and emboldening think of the ancestors and ourselves in this way.

I agree with your statement about some work really not being pleasing or beautiful. Such a great explanation and very interesting about formline. You really see it at Celebration on people's regalia. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I hope more people take your classes and beautify the world with the rules of creating balance through formline.
