2025 World Junior Championship Bronze-Medal Game Highlights: Sweden vs. Czechia

David Edstrom tied the game twice for Sweden in regulation but the shootout would belong to Czechia as Eduard Sale would cap a 14-round marathon with the goal that would give his team the bronze at the World Junior Hockey Championship. The 28 attempts made it the longest shootout in IIHF tournament history.

Why does no Swede have 7 goals like Štancl as well? The Czechs played Sweden twice, US, and Canada. Štancl scored against all of those. He was the best goal scorer of the tournament (and Šalé second), period. No ifs, buts, or maybes.

Hooray to the bronze, it was a proper battle decided in the end by the narrowest margin in a skill competition. Commiserations to Sweden, because it sucks to come so close and end up short by a hair’s breadth. We know the pain, as we’ve experienced it in 2023. Back then we beat Canada 5-2 in the pool stages only to lose to them in the gold medal game 2-3 in OT, so a very similar story to what happened to Sweden now. Great to get the bronze medal after the SF disappointment.

It was great to watch the Czech coach having a speach after the 3rd place game in the locking room. He said a few words to every player and when he got to Sikora he gave him booooooo and all the guys went booooooo and the whole locking room was ROFL ... great moment.

@@Duality.y I understand your disappointment, but I think you’re being a bit too negative about your team. It was an extremely close game. SOG 34-33, decided by 14 rounds of a skill competition. Two very even teams, anyone could have won it. Statistically, you’re going to win 50% of those. More importantly, both teams played a good defense (no 8-5 explosion like last year’s BMG vs. Finland), both have good goalkeepers, all four goals in play were legit, no stupid bounce, no fluke. It was a good game between two very good teams, and it could have gone either way. Both teams can hold their heads high.

Wow did not see this coming tbh, Sweden's game didn't look like it's usual self to be honest, it's been a great tournament for us Finns even though we lost close game to U.S, because we already won the tournament when we beat Sweden, honestly it's better then gold medal, that would have been just a bonus, and seeing them lose the bronze game as well, it's a good day.

Strange system, only getting 10 minutes of overtime before it's decided on penalties in a medal match. Congratulations to the Czech Republic but Sweden also did something unique, it's not often you see a national team in a team sport that the more they get to train/play together, the worse they play the more matches they play.
