Meiji era metalwork is the best I've ever seen. Those don't like possible to create with modern day technology, was that knowledge just lost?

The art was not lost. The time to make a real tsuba could run from a few weeks to several months. After 1873 swords were not allowed to be worn. This killed the market. Today tsuba are made from cast iron not forged. The reproductions are just cheap fakes. The cost to hand make a tsuba is a minimum of several thousand dollars IF it’s made like the Tsuba of several hundred years ago. Even the wrought iron is very hard to come by.
