What is a hybrid fish? A hybrid fish is a fish that is the offspring of two different species of fish. In this video I will be going around the world going through 5 different species of hybrid fish. Some hybrid fish are natural hybrids that occur in the wild without human interaction and some hybrids are man made fish that are created for the aquarium trade.

For our first hybrid fish we will be heading to north America as we have the greengill sunfish. The greengill sunfish is the offspring of both the bluegill and the green sunfish.
Our next hybrid fish was completely created by accident in a lab in Hungary. The researchers in this lab were trying to breed the critically endangered American paddle fish and Russian sturgeon. During this project the researchers accidentally created the sturddlefish hybrid.
For our next hybrid fish we will be heading back to the freshwaters of north America as we have the tiger muskie. The tiger muskie is the offspring of both the northern pike and the muskellunge.
Our next hybrid fish is a completely man made fish that was created for the aquarium trade and it is the flowerhorn cichlid. The flowerhorn cichlid is a very controversial man made fish as many people love them and many people hate them. The flowerhorn cichlid is a mix of a variety of parent fish.
For our final hybrid fish we can head to a variety of locations as we have the tiger trout. The tiger trout is the offspring of both the brown trout and the brook trout.

As a former fisheries biologist, I can confirm that bluegill and green sunfish hybrids are super common. Tiger trout are great sportfish as they are fun to catch but also sterile so it's easier to manage their populations. Here in the western U.S we also encounter quite a few rainbow trout and cutthroat trout hybrids known as "cuttbows"

Great video, Greengills are alot of fun to catch and eat. I know of two pretty unique hybrids native in the Central US. Quachita lake and river in Arkansas has many Longear/Redbreast (Lepomis megalotis/Lepomis auritus) hybrids which are the prettiest fish I have ever seen, inside or outside an aquarium. Another incredible hybrid species is the "Meanmouth Bass" in the Gasconade river system in Missouri, which are Smallmouth/Spotted Bass (Micropterus dolomieu, M. punctulatus), hybrids that fight on the line as hard fish much bigger than their size. These would both be great additions to another hybrid fish list

Sunfish in general tend to hybridize in the wild because they are often found in the same waters and they have similar spawning habits. Their offspring are often even more colorful than the parents.

I've seen tons of weird colors in sunfish infested waters like shades of purple and I've seen a red one a single time, I've only fished a few years but I've found countless sunfish who's colors weren't right for our local species(we have no red sunfish to my knowledge and I've never heard of purple and black sunfish eother)

@@Deeznutz002 hybridizing in the black bass family is usually a bad thing. For instance, the shoal bass is native to the streams where I live, but they are threatened by hybridization with illegally stocked spotted bass. I have caught these hybrids, but no shoal bass.

There's a pretty cool bass hybrid called the meanmouth bass. The parent species are a smallmouth bass and a largemouth or spotted bass (at least I think it can be a spotted bass). But since bass usually seems to be other fishermen's favorite and most targeted fish it might be a cool one. But I'm always amazed to see a nice sized musky or tiger musky and hope to one day catch one...

Taxonomy the way it's commonly taught in schools, with neat species, genera, families, etcetera, has been recognised by scientists as incorrect and insufficient for most scientific purposes years ago. Most either use cladistics or disregard taxonomy in favour of ecological guilds. Schools just tend to lag behind the actual science, probably because revising the textbooks takes a lot of time and money.

@@alphatrion100 Not in the slightest. All humans belong to a single species, Homo sapiens. The video is talking about hybridisation between different species. Home sapiens (more correctly sub-species Homo sapiens sapiens) is, in point of fact, one of the least genetically diverse species of mammal in the world; a result of having emerged from a very small gene pool. You can't get much more "mixed" than human beings. There is more diversity in a single group of Bonobo chimps than in the entire human species. We are all one very closely related family.

Greetings from Malaysia, my uncle gifted me 3 flowerhorn cichlids as pets, aggressive buggers they are, leaps for the food whenever I feed them, they must be kept away from eyeshot from each other, or else they will run into the glass to try to fight each other even though they are in different tanks, and yeah they get huge too, mine grew up to about 13 inches, and I sadly have to give them back to my uncle as I can't afford bigger tanks and sadly one of them got sick as well......

I once caught a Splake in a natural high mountain lake in Colorado. It is a mix between a lake trout and a brook trout.

There is a WI state hatchery on Lake Superior that actively breeds Splake for release in Lake Superior. Splake are a very common catch in the western end of the big Lake.

Longnose Gar x Alligator Gar hybrids are awesome fish... and extremely rare. I know an Alligator Gar guide in Texas that has caught thousands of Gar but only a handful of these hybrids.

"Flowerhorns" are so goofy looking as to be quite charming. Color always garners attention, so how can you go wrong with a dazzling Flowerhorn? Oh yes, their size also recommends them.

I have to disagree. A lot of flowerhorns are prone to infection and a premature death. Really, it is irresponsible and unethical to create a fish like this. If you want a charming fish with personality and color, get a tiger or fire morph of an oscar.

As someone who owns a flowerhorn, and many other aggressive central and South American cichlids (red devils, vieja, festae, jags, Jack Dempseys, green terror) I was always put off by them simply because of the hybridization process and for the ethical and moral dilemma that come with it. Chilli (my female flowerhorn) whom I rescued from a small tank with disgusting green water and a noticeable smell of urea has rewarded me greatly with a loving but staunch personality. I was told "she doesn't get along with others" but has turned out to be one of the more timid and gentle fish in the tank. She is very goofy looking indeed but I think it adds to her charm, the oversized eyes and slight underbite makes her look like the bulldog of the fish world. If I wasn't given the opportunity to give her a new or better life I never would have even considered buying one, now she's one of my favourites.

It would be interesting to hear your take on red eye bass/ spotted bass hybrids. They are an issue due to our competing and outnumbering the rarer native red eye in Alabama. They are a fascinating fish. And the more people that can learn about them the better. These fish are facing lots of problems and being native to only a few river in Alabama and Georgia the range isn’t big to begin with.

Didn't know about the Redeye/Spotted Bass hybrids. Here in Missouri we have Spotted/Smallmouth hybrids in the Gasconade river which fight on the line like a much larger fish. In some reservoirs I have heard of Largemouth/Smallmouth Hybrids (which I have never caught) and White/Black Crappie hybrids in TableRock lake (which I have caught).

Trout alone have many hybrids. Splake, Cutbow, etc. Sunfish have many hybrids. Bass have hybrids. Walleye has at least one hybrid.

Incorrect. The warmouth (Lepomis gulosus) is not a hybrid of a bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Warmouth is in the same genus as bluegill, but it is its own species. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warmouth

in the pet trade we have the platy and swordtail, they have been interbreed to get the colors we have now, so non of them are 100% paly or swordtail. and we have the same with the molly as they have interbreed different kinds to get what we have now. on the other hand we have the different Malawi cichlids, they are all relatively closely related so if you have a few single fish from different species or some that look similar, you can get hybrids, and these are frowned upon, not like with the platy, swordtail and molly that where breed deliberate.

On my last trip (June 2021) to Bull Shoals, AR, I caught 2 Tiger Trout down below the dam on the White River. I honestly thought I had a very large Brown Trout both times. They we 16" Tigers. Fun to catch, but kinda disappointing once landed as they were so much smaller than the Brown's were were catching (22" - 25").

My uncle and i cought a paddle fish by mistake back in 2017. We new right away we needed to release it as soon as possible so we did. It was so cool looking and weird that we caught it in the bayou in south Louisiana. I did get a picture of it before we released it never know if ill never get the chance again in my life.

Muskie is short nick name for Muskellunge, it is the fish of 100,000 casts. The Tiger is very aggressive and not as hard to catch compared to it's parent. Love you vids
