Garden of Sinners (the anime) was my official introduction to TYPE-MOON, and I've been having a blast with all of the series so far. I'm an addict when it comes to video game lore and world-building, and TYPE-MOON is just so good at building up their universe.

You're the second person to mention starting with The Garden of Sinners. I haven't looked much into that yet, but will do so (although the anime is now difficult to get hold of for me). The nasuverse truly is a universe.

@@Food4Dogs I actually became such a big fan of the Garden of Sinners anime series (my introduction to the Nasuverse however was the 2004 Fate anime) that I ended up buying the blu-ray collection of the movie series. I can definitely recommend that!

What a blast from the past. When I read the original Tsukihime VN I was still in junior high. Even though the original is very old school and quite dated by today's standards, it still holds a special place in my heart. It had an enchanting quality to it. I couldn't tear myself away from the screen.

That brings back some memories. I found the Tsukihime DVD's when I was in the military and picked them up. Liked them, but they were nothing great. Then a guy in my squadron who was REALLY into visual novels told me the VN was much better and sent me a fan translation of it. Needless to say, the anime made more sense after the VN. Now that Type Moon is redoing their older works I need to actually get them and start running through them again. Did Tsukihime almost twenty years ago, and over a decade for Fate. But, that'll have to wait until I finish going through the Muv Luv series. And for the record, Arcueid = best girl. I still laugh about the packing tape scene.

I'm so happy to see this became a video! Tsukihime was my introduction to TYPE-MOON. I have fond memories of playing a fan translation when I was in high school. Now, 15 years later, I am a huge fan of the Nasuverse and I can play Tsukihime again. I got the Switch version because I love playing my visual novels in hand-held mode. I'll be diving in once I finish Mahoyo!

After a quick look, the text size for Tsukihime seems to be the same as in Mahoyo. It's not terribly small, but I think it could be a bit bigger. I also wish the text had more drop-shadow or a darker black outline around the letters. It can be difficult to read on lighter backgrounds sometimes, like white walls or overcast skies.

Tsukihime is one of the best VN of all time and everyone should give it a try. As you can see, i'm a Satsuki fan. I was so excited when i watched the red garden teaser. Fantastic breakdown. What I love about the limited edition boxes is that they are like old PC game boxes. I liked the story you shared about you and PoodlePa watching the anime. You might really like the manga by Sasaki Shonen, it was actually a really good adaptation. I do hope we get an UFOtable adaptation of the anime. I love Arcueid's new design.

Yes, JRPGs are my primary love. But if you look back through my 5+ years of videos, you can see there's also a heavy emphasis on VNs. Plus I really like all sorts of games - I do a fair number of indie adventure/puzzle games, metroidvanias and many others. I'm actually also into classic and Western RPGs but just don't get around to covering them.

One good thing I can say of the anime is that the soundtrack is excellent. The old pc version allowed you to switch out the songs, so I tried out the anime soundtrack with the later routes and it made for a great experience. On another note , it's important to note that Tsukihime's English translation is noticeably higher quality than the one in Mahoyo. So part of the difference in quality that you noticed might be due to that.

Thanks for the note about the translation. Someone on Twitter also pointed out the same issue to me. As an ex-translator myself, I know only too well how much impact a sub-standard translation can have.

Thanks for covering it. I was floored by the opening scene as well, which almost brought me to tears. The music while talking with Aoko is so perfect for that scene. I'm a Fate fan (i studiously decided to start with the studio Deen adaptation, before watching UBW and Zero, and finally watching a playthrough of the VN). I've been keep myself from spoiling Tsukihime until the VN finally came out so i can get an authentic experience. And now im reading through it! When the Fate VN comes out, I'm exicted to finally play one of my favorite games for the first time 😅

I'm very glad about the remake official English release! About a year or so ago I borrowed from my local library and watched the Tsukihime anime, and largely shared the same experience of it not being that good, but still engaging enough to get interested in the VN and allowing me to somewhat enjoy content about it online, like fan-art and fan discussion. And while I don't have enough money for the official English remake release, there's an online version of the original VN in English that I've been enjoying. So I guess something bad can be a bit of a gift sometimes.

Tsukihime never had an all-ages version, until this remake. To which this is so different from the original that an argument can be made that it's two different entities. Tsukihime was the first game from Type Moon as a doujin group. Fate was the first game by Type Moon as an incorporated entity. Type Moon, the company actually doesn't have rights to Tsukihime, until this release, because the commercial company isn't, technically, the same as the doujin group.

My copy was also delivered a few days ago. Fortunately, the print run seems to be larger than that of Witch on the Holy Night, which I only received as a Japanese import and therefore couldn't read the texts in the artbook. A remaster of Fate/stay Night is also due to be released this year and can already be ordered from PlayAsia. The quality of the packaging is really a nice surprise, which was also the case with Witch on the Holy Night. This should be standard. I've never understood why you have to pay so much money for a Collectors Editon and then you get a cardboard box that is sometimes thinner than a shoe box.

I personalyl got interested in Tsukihime after learning about Shiki and his eyes. It is such a cool concept. I also really like the art and think Arcueid is amazing without actually knowing here yet. I also recently watched a clip of the non existing anime and saw non existent scenes that were so terrible that I'm glad they don't exist. Ok, on another note, it is great that the the anime let you bond with your partner over a cool story he would not have experienced otherwise. It is just sad that the anime is so shoddy and bad that the only thing people get form the experience is the concept of the Nasuverse. Oh, btw, Mahoyo is actually getting an anime from, I think, I forgot the studios name. The guys that did the other fate anime. Why the hell can't I remember that name? Anyway, now that you know fate and Tsukihime go watch Carnival Phantasm! You'll love it! It is basically just pure comedy and gags, but there is a funny Aoko scene and you might see her in a new light. I am debating if i want to import the physical versions or if I am going digital, but I might just go digital. I can't really afford to import the game and I really just want to play it. I am so sad I'm so poor. Anyway, I am preordering Ys X tomorrow and will just make myself some food over the course of the next few weeks with the ingredients I have. I just need to head to the kitchen and actually cook something. Pizza sounds great. And bread. I like bread. But yeah, Type moon is great and has really cool stuff form what I've seen. Can't to play fate and the rest. I hope I have a good time.

Ha - exchange rate, esp against the US dollar .. 🥺 I really hesitate to order anything from the States these days, it's brutal. Fortunately, Tsukihime was on pre-order for a long time, and it wasn't too bad back when I placed the order. The Canadian dollar is more forgiving, so I tend to order more from VGP in Canada these days (also their service is better than Amazon).

I love this so much! I'm such an Arcueid fanboy Tsukihime doesn't get any love compared to Fate and it's a shame.

hmm I'd say it depends what feel you want, I only know the plot of tsukihime thru friends and parts I've read, and I can tell it's going to be hard for me to read, but one day maybe Mahoyo on the other hand, is more close the knk feel but is less goreish, and has all type of character relationships I love the most in Nasuverse stories, UBW or LB6 for example, also both are set in HS but Mahoyo feels more mature probably due to the nature of the characters backgrounds, def my fav TM trio wish I had gotten the special edition 🥲

Since I'm fairly new to Type Moon games, I'm not entirely sure how accurate this is; but I've seen some conversation online about how much better the localization for the Tsukihime remake is compared to Witch on the Holy Night. So the issues you're having with some of the prose may actually be more the result of the localization rather than Nasu's writing. Of course, that's just something I remember seeing when I was doing a bit of research to learn more about the release.

Yes, I've had several people with good knowledge about these VNs tell me about the quality issues with the WotHN translation. However, as a former professional translator myself, I can usually spot what are translation "infelicities" and what is poor or laboured writing. My comment about the quality of the writing referred to much more than translation issues. Things like structuring dialogue sequences, narrative exposition etc. That's really where you notice the relative inexperience (craft of writing) - not in awkward spots of translation.

@@Food4Dogs ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. I'm by no means a literature or translation expert, but I have been very much enjoying my time with the Tsukihime remake. Up till now my only exposure to Nasu's work has been with Fate anime adaptations and the Fate/ Grand Order mobile game (actually, me pulling Arcueid in the game is what made me want to read Tsukihime since I wanted to learn more about the character).

@@Food4Dogs well to be more specific, I started with the first Fate/Stay Night anime adaptation, and I ended up watching Fate/Zero later on and it snowballed from there when the Unlimited Blade Works anime started airing. I hadn't even started playing Grand Order consistently until late last year, actually.
