Brings back such horrible memories. I was at this exact hotel (Merlin, Patong Beach) when the Tsunami hit. I was lucky to escape with my life. For so many, that was not the case.

A guy that I knew died in the tsunami, he was 19 and we had just graduated high school here in Sweden. My dad had a coworker who also died. :/

I was on the other side of Hotel at Tri Trang Beach sleeping in a tent when the tsunami hit and got washed away into the front of Merlin Beach Resort. Some people helped me into the hotel after the water was gone and gave me some clothes. I was wearing no clothes because the tsunami ripped them of my body. I remember someone with a video camera filmed my rescue. Do you have more footage from this day?

I've have some photos, but no more videos, so probably nothing related to your rescue unfortunately

It still surprises me to this day that most tourists didn't understand that a tsunami was happening,I could understand the locals around the Indian Ocean, few of them had experienced a tsunami, though there were some small local ones in remote regions, but tourists from Australia,US and Europe who have more access to most media sources I thought some of them would have gotten the idea this was a tsunami, despite whether they were aware of an sub-duction earthquake off the coast of northern Sumatra, there are still signs of an impending tsunami, receding shorline, unusual sea activity, even many local people who never experienced a tsunami realized that the sea off their coastline was not acting in a normal manner they were familiar with,so those on beaches started heading inland to safety while the tourists all ran down to the shore to watch this event...all I know is that when the sea starts acting up in a manner you are not familiar with, you take precautions and move away, also when you see large waves out at sea coming towards your shoreline swallowing up large ships, you don't stand there filming, you run.

You say that now! Try in 2004, with a lot of locals that never saw something like that, a lot of tourists that live far from the sea and no warning about the earthquake or tsunami! I live in a beach city in Brazil, and if the sea recue i would never think it is a tsunami because it never happened here and it's almost impossible! Our minds don't accept thing like that are about to happen that easy

The locals didn't recognize the signs either. Living beside the ocean doesn't mean you'll know what a suddenly retreating shoreline means. None of these people had any prior experience with tsunamis.

I will echo the comments of others..... I everyone around the world understand what a Tsuanmi is NOW. I was there in 2004 - at this exact hotel (Merlin Patong Beach, Phuket) and I assure NO ONE knew what was happening. Everyone was in shock, terrified and running for their lives.

Hi Steven, I'm working on a documentary series about the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami for a production company in the UK. Is this your footage of the disaster? If so, we'd be very interested in seeing the original and potentially licensing it. If you reply here I can send you my email address. Many thanks, Alex
