Siboya got off lucky on this one. We had quite a few islands to block the tsunami, but there was still a lot of damage done. Every time we take the ferry we can see the "tsunami boats" that were built to replace the ones lost in the tsunami as a reminder of its power.

I grew up right smack dab in the middle of the US, consequently where I was when this happened. I had heard of tsunamis, I knew what they were, but until this happened I didn't know any warning signs. I'll admit, I probably would have been standing on the beach too, not recognizing what was coming. So I don't judge these people harshly, but I do find myself wishing for them to run. What is surprising to me is that even the locals weren't beating a hasty retreat. I read somewhere that tsunamis aren't a common occurrence there, also surprising since Indonesia sits so close to two major plates and the fault line is just right off the coast.

I have lived my entire life by the ocean. I were clueless about tsunami. When I think back I may have seen tsunami like in cartoons but that was more of a myth to me. I can't tell how I would react if I were on a beach in the area the tsunami hit in 2004. I am healthy sceptical but still. Who knows. I find judgmental comments on footages from boxing day 2004 in the Indian ocean annoying. Poor souls.

@@randomly_random_0 preach, I always get really upset and sad when people start showing hate to the people that looked and filmed. One: as you stated above people did not know, nothing like this had happened on this scale during this time period prior. Two: from watching videos of people interviewed after the tsunami struck alot of people explained how people where memorized by the ocean during and leading up to the tsunamis and that makes sense hence me being slightly obsessed with it myself lol. Then the people who are like your an idiot why didn't you run as we stated above if it where them back then odds would have been they where probably like 8 and even if they where older they most likely would not have known and given that the nasty comments are on videos of watching people who where watching the tsunami I have a funny feeling that they also would want to watch given the context.
@1234lavallee19 жыл бұрын
I think one of the reasons the tsunamis were not very devastating at least on this part of the island was do to the depth of sea,looking into the distance you can see the waves have crested suggesting the sea was very shallow at that distance which would have allowed the wave to expend much of its power before reaching shore especially if the waves are coming close together,if the sea depth had been quite deep at that distance than we would have been looking at a much different dangerous scenerio.

From beginning of the video, was it the first or second wave coming? The later wave seemed to be the bigger one.
@chrisemerson77435 жыл бұрын
At the very beginning of this video is at the beginning of the waves. So this is about 20-30min after the sea started acting up. It had already gone out and was coming back to shore. If u watch it closely u can see how the the waves are just crashing on top of each other. It’s a very strange site. When u see a wave breaker it always progresses forward and then rolls back. This shit was breaking on top of each other and only getting taller. It’s a very weird site to see. I can see how people were just staring at the water like wtf is that! It’s not logical(?).
@wolfthunder25265 жыл бұрын
@@chrisemerson7743 actually the wave had been broken, but the later water mass still pushing forward. This made the water level higher. The wave height on the video was pretty average, like in the rainy season, but the mass and pushing power was so incredible. Someone would not have a chance to stand still the pushing power of that ravaging ocean. If I were there, I'd be hypnotized also by the strange waves.
@chrisemerson77435 жыл бұрын
Fighter Cat What do u mean by “the wave had been broken”? Also, the reason the water level was rising was because of an earthquake. The tsunami came in just a little ways at first and most people didn’t notice. Then the water started to retreat more and more. But the whole time the waves are still breaking but only going backwards. During this time the water is actually building up, waiting for the energy from the earthquake to catch up. When it does it comes in at about 60mph.

Wow, how someone stands with hands on hips in front of a rapidly approaching & furious tsunami while Scandinavian folks are yelling “komm”, “komm” in urgent voices. “Komm” sounds so very close to English” come”, & with a tsunami rapidly advancing on you & everyone else running away as fast as they could, I mean, could this be difficult for a European resort employee to get a quick handle on? The thing about disasters in any area is that you get 90secs to act. A t instantly or die is pretty much the ghastly rule. After that, good luck…

@Ryukai-san5 жыл бұрын
It's all well and said in hindsight, but this was 15 years ago (this IS the history), back then the majority of people hadn't even heard the word 'Tsunami' let alone knew what one was. You had to take an A-level/college degree in Geology just to be taught the basics. Tsunamis on this scale had never happened before in the 'modern digital world' so there was no reference material other than a few grainy B&W pics from the aftermath of the Alaskan earthquake/tsunami from 1964 (non from the event itself). Luckly, with both modern communication and the internet's ability to spread information within a matter of hours we are able to spread this type of warning information a lot better and much more widely :)
@Ryukai-san5 жыл бұрын
It's not a Tidal wave, tidal waves (normally called Bore's) only affect the first couple of meters of the ocean/sea surface and are a result of the Sun/Moon combined gravity (hence the word Tidal in the name) pulling on the ocean surface in a particular way at certain times of year in a specific area. They are completely predictable and mostly harmless (check out videos of one called the Severn Bore). This on the other hand is a Tsunami, these are generated by Earthquakes/Landslides and are a result of a massive amount of water being pushed away from the earthquake/landslide area and affect the ENTIRE column of water from the surface all the way down to the sea floor. They can be many Kilometers/Miles deep as well as a couple of kilometers/miles wide (for each wave, and there can be multiple waves one after the other, and can take over a day for the ocean/sea to stop oscillating back and forth). We can only 'predict' what will happen shortly after the Tsunami has formed (and if it forms close to shore there isn't enough time as there can be only minutes between both earthquake and tsunami happening on a coastline) and even then it can take anything up to an hour to accurately figure out how high the wave will be along coastal areas, something that people near by don't have :(

@Stephen Murphy here you are right. That people know nothing. You see so many ...so many! And no one knows the signs of the coming disaster? (Like a the water taking so much backwards??). Strange that there are almost no exmples of anybody ringing alarm.

Well, it's easy for us to say with hindsight, but it seems to be a common human theme! I saw a landslide video where basically the whole hill side was collapsing down taking with it the forst and the people on the road right next to it just stood there oohing and aaahing! Pretty much every single one of them! Just because that part was first in coming down, doesn't mean the bit above the bystanders isn't going next, but no, they just stood there gawking and filming. I am wondering, as you see this time and time again with a massive event like these, that maybe it is just too great a thing for the mind to fathom, and maybe the brain just shuts down into bystander mode? I saw a doco with this buffalo sitting down and lions tearing chunks out of its back while it was still alive...it was just sitting there not making a single noise or resisting.Suddenly a fight broke out amongst the lions for some reason and they were all squabbling and the buffalo just got up and walked off away from them with a massive chunk out of its back and the lions didn't realise it had escaped. i wondered how an animal could just sit there quietly without fightback and not make a noise whilst being eaten alive, and I guess it is a coping mechanism in a hopeless situation- when you are staring death right in its face, and its not seemingly possible to survive, creatures just seem to go docile and yield to it, and I wonder whether this massive disaster inaction is a similar thing, because it happens across the globe in all of these disaster situations..

Humans stupid enough to stand there recording events instead of going to higher ground particularly with dependants deserve to be washed out to sea. No sympathies for these people.

Oh wow. With all the other catastrophic videos I’ve seen, these people are so fortunate the waves weren’t worse or higher at this location. I was expecting so much worse.

Eu não ficaria ai para ver , ia procurar um abrigo, acho que essas pessoas estão acostumadas em ver isso, só que temos que ser cautelosos e procurar um lugar seguro.
