I was 10 years old at that time. I still remember me and my dad usually goes to Marina swimming pool located at Marina beach every sunday. I got ready by 6 in the morning waiting for my dad . He was reluctant to come on that day saying he was very tired for some reason or the other. I was crying literally pulling my dad to take me to beach. But he didn't. After 2 long hours of crying and then we realised something had happened in the beach. Not only here but other parts of tamilnadu, srilanka, Indonesia, Singapore, Maldives. We came to know something called as Tsunami had hit over the coastal regions. Many people were dead including my swimming coach whom i have seen the day before. Still tears roll out not just because of the people who lost their lives but also to my own family where me and my dad escaped of what would have been a bizzare and myself commenting on this video after 16 years..

I was in my Pre KG at Immaculate School, Royapeth. I still remember my mother waking up my dad after seeing water in buckets and clothes hanged, shaking. Many in Chennai woke up and came out when they felt the tremor while they were sleeping. I still remember those sights. My neighbors thought water may reach the place as Royapeth is nearer to the beach, our building had five floors so if it had come we would go to the terrace was the plan thank god that did not happen! My mother had prepared Boori and sambhar dal for breakfast and she was feeding me near the entrance of the building waiting along with the neighbors! As our street(Oil Monger Street) was close to the main road(Pycrofts Road) we could see people running away from the beach towards the city! I still remember all this! I left Chennai in 2006. Today I live in Bengaluru doing my 1st-year B.Sc. Bored staying at home during the Coronavirus Pandemic, I found this video! This Tsunami incident impacted my mother so much, as this was the first big disaster she witnessed happening very close to her home, she is so much impacted that she compares COVID-19 death toll with the Tsunami death toll i.e., Coronavirus is worst than Tsunami! Hmmm, don't know what else will come! Anyway, STAY HOME STAY SAFE!
@lokeshwaranvr4 жыл бұрын
@STOCK MARKET I don't know about that as I was too young then. My house was near Zam Bazaar Police Station nowhere water would reach so far if you think now, but people at that time as it was for the first time tsunami hit, they were scared. Pycrofts Road is directly connected to Marina beach and I could see people and vehicles going in one direction(towards the city). I haven't seen the water.
@lokeshwaranvr4 жыл бұрын
@STOCK MARKET The earthquake which led to tsunami occurred off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia which is considerably far away from India. So, the water entered only to those localities which are very close to the coast and considering Marina Beach and all the beaches along the Indian coast are very popular spots on Sunday mornings for tourists especially at Kanyakumari, then walkers, joggers, teens playing cricket, etc the death toll simply raised, also consider the lack of practical knowledge about tsunami in India, unlike Japan. Cyclones are common but the tsunami was unseen until then!
@lokeshwaranvr4 жыл бұрын
@STOCK MARKET It's not possible to say no construction for about 2km from the coast, if so then the first thing that should be blown up in the Tamil Nadu State Secretariat building(Fort St. Geroge)! Precautionary measures like signals(like in Japan), Also you can't predict a tsunami, as I said warnings from the coast guard and navy is the only possible option. People are more aware nowadays, that way we might reduce the death toll!

This was as personal a tragedy as it can get. Being in a seaside township near Mahabalipuram all I can recollect from childhood are the countless hours spent on the beach sands. Tsunami was an unheard of event in the region and nobody expected anything beyond giant wave...even that too was not expected at that time since the Storm season had already ended. Our school used to be right next to the sea and free periods were spent lazing on the beach sands if the play ground was occupied. After School I had moved out of the little township to the Metros for work. But many of my friends and families were still there when the tragedy stuck on Boxing day 😭. Our entire senior school classrooms that were at sniffing distance of the high tides were totalled and the landscape/populace were scarred forever. Small mercy it chose to hit on a Sunday.

This comment section is sickening really. Firstly, when the 2004 tsunami happened, almost no one in the Indian Ocean region knew what a tsunami was. Only certain island populations knew what to do when the sea suddenly pulled out. Even Western tourists in Thailand got caught in the tsunami there because they didn't know they were supposed to get to higher ground. So please stop acting that you are more intelligent than these people. You only know what to do when the sea pulled out only because what happened had happened. If you were there back in 2004, do you honestly think you would have done any different ?
@rosesweet19677 жыл бұрын

This 2004 documentary of the great tsunami that first gravely hit Aceh Province of Indonesia then India and Thailand should serve as a mandatory documentary for all to see and learn from. Thousands and thousands of people from those directly hit were not aware of the magnitude of damages these tsunamis could bring. The abrupt receding of the sea shore, exposing vast seabeds along the coasts are signs of impending humongous waves (tsunamis) immediately after, in a matter of seconds. From the footage, those curiously surveying the coasts were not aware of the dangers these tsunamis can result into.

I still remember that fateful day when tsunami struck chennai and rest of Tamil nadu state in india. It was for the first time in our lives to witness sea crossing its shores and landing on the road which is 500 metres away. Early morning on that day, we felt mild earthquake and my father cautioning us about it while we were still in sleep. Within two hours, I heard people screaming about sea entering land. I went to the beach which is 1 kM from my home and saw that terrible scene of water on the roads and all vehicles thrown away. Thousands of shops in the 3 KM long marina beach were thrown away in different directions . some shoppers found their shops one KM away. such was the power of the Tsunami which chennai felt probably for the first time. Many morning walkers on the beach died. Tsunami was new to india and we vaguely remember reading it happening in japan. If we knew about it, probably we could have saved thousands of lives south of chennai in nagapattinam district areas as we had golden two hours to escape. India is sending so many rockets to space, but we had nothing to save our lives from this Tsunami on that fateful day. RIP to all souls departed. Luckily (yes) tsunami struck in the early morning when the crowd is less in the beach, had it struck in the evening, surely thousands would have perished in marina beach itself. In that way, I feel chennai escaped.

Its so flat, and there were countless empty lots, with just foundations standing, along the entire route of about 50kms. I may be wrong on the distance, it was while ago. But the devastation was so obvious, even a couple of years down the line. The Indian people are some of the kindest I've met in the world. This was just so devastating and so incredibly sad😪

This was the 1st Tsunami in this region in over 500 year's so although people had heard stories and legends about incidents when due to some reason (mostly connected to anger of the gods) a powerful earthquake shook the region before the sea itself rose up and destroyed everything around it. So they didn't know about what to expect in this case. The legend of how during the rule of Pallava King's there was an earthquake and the sea itself rose up and swallowed most of the temples which had already been built when the temples of Mahabalipuram were being built could be a historical memory of a Tsunami.

I live in a coastal city here in the pacific and we were taught about tsunamis in 3rd grade. Before this tsunami happened people in the villages and towns knew nothing about Tsunamis. This was an eye openere for the world not just asia.

Actually people back then, don't know why does sea retreats back and they watch it in amaze, not realizing the fact that a massive wave is approaching them. The sea may retreats back to even 3 to 5 kms and people walk into sea, to explore the sea floor. But they would get no time to escape from the site as the waves are much faster than we think.

The sad truth is most of the people you and I see walking around enjoying that day are now dead, very sad, I remember siting at home watching the horror unfold on my TV and crying for the victim's.

It's insane to think our curiosity makes people get closer to the water after is recessed. Then you see a few smart people start running.

So we know and learn.. if something unusual happened at the beach.. the bird are shouting hard.. also fish jump out the surface.. that's means something bad like tsunami will happen. RIP for people who are dead...that time.

A tide had already struck in the beginning that’s why there are cars pushed back and water over the shore line. They thought it was over but it was just going to be worse.

In Chennai the tsunami is not really high, maximum 4 meters run up. However what makes the victim so many is because many people get into the beach and go to the withdrawn sea looking for fish and playing. They don’t know that deadly waves would come to them very quick.
