Tsunami

Graduation film from The Animation Workshop/VIA UC: Haru returns home in denial after a tsunami, where he must learn to deal with his loss through an encounter with a magical sea Spirit.

+inmate1011001 the fish is supposed to represent Harus attachment to his beloved childhood home and his denial of the disaster that crippled it. When he lets the fish go it symbolizes his acceptance of reality and his letting go of his once loved home

It could also mean that, but I also noticed that there was a family portrait on the wall (after he leaves the bathtub) in which he's with an older woman and a young boy. Maybe they are his mother and son?

Not sure why but this really affected me. It's so simple, though, and I've seen these "type" or shorts many times, but... something special about this one. I don't know what but I felt it.

Hatson it really shows the heartbreak associated with losing everything in the blink of an eye One minute you could have it all, and the next.. it could all be destroyed. It’s accepting what’s happened that’s the hardest part for anyone

It's beautiful. I have a feeling it affects some people who suffered from the Tsunami in Japan a couple of years ago far more deeply though.

I have watched it twice and gained more each time. It made me think of the mythological catfish that causes earthquakes by hitting the ocean bottom with its tail. The two dimensional animation is breathtaking. Despite the fact that the tree destroyed the home, I thought the beautiful green leaves, tree's structure, and sunshine would look wonderful in an inner court. Of course, the leaves would be dead in reality. Often I have found while watching international videos that the speechless vieos often communicate more and touch an universal human cord. Thank you for sharing your video.

The art style is AMAZING and goes really well with all the music and SFX. This is my interpretation but I'm guessing the water is his feelings, overflowing and needing to overcome his fears to set them free. There may not be any meaning behind this animation, but overall it was the best one I've sen so far. :D

There is a game that was made for the 2011 tsunami that gives off the same feeling as this short does The only difference is that it’s literally based around collecting the lost items of real people who either died, or lost their homes to the destruction, from a shore that they washed up on in another part of the world.

Nature co-exist with us, without notions of "loss" or "gain". In its own mysterious way, it does the best to keep up with the environments we built for ourselves (our commodities) and with how immersed we can be on them. As we become oblivious of nature's true impact in our lives, it's no wonder that when it suddenly makes itself present, it does with violent waves of boundless destruction, the silver lining being that through this outlet nature finds ways to interact with us; to remind us that it exists and that it lives with us. As harsh as it may seem through sentient eyes, sometimes, nature shake us up so we can wake up to the reality. To see the world we share with it. Only then, we can reconcile with nature, and see its beauty once more.
