Thanks for doing this review. I just ordered this lens based on this video. I have the Fujifilm 16mm f/1.4 and the smaller f/2.8 XF lenses, and like both for considered wide angle shooting. I ordered this TT Artisans lens specifically because I like to be able to zone focus via the comprehensive DOF Mark's. The focus by wire Fujifilm lenses suffer from "drift" while walking around, so a true manual focus lens is called for for hip shot street shooting. Can't wait for my lens to arrive.

I thought you might appreciate knowing that it was your review that finally made me pull the trigger and order one of these, as soon as the video was over. I have a Fujifilm X-E3 , and it is the perfect camera for me, so I don't ever inquire and read about other cameras, but I am always interested in lenses. The 18-55mm that came in my kit is terrific when I only want to bring one lens, and need autofucus, but as an artist I enjoy manual lenses and the charter they can provide a whole lot more. Last year I bought a $40 Risespray 35mm f/1.6, and it continues to amaze me. So when looking for a wider angle to add to my kit this lens fell into my radar, and your description sold me. Thanks mate, happy shooting!

Got their 35mm f1.4 ant it's simply the best budget manual I ever had...will probably get this one and the 50mm f1.2 too. Hopefuly ttartisan doesnt go the 7artisans way and bump their prices for no reason other than they get popular; I remember getting the 7artisans 55mm f1.4 for $89 last year and now I see it around $130.. I know inflation and all but almost +50% in a year is A LOT.

Hello and thank you for an interesting review. I have been using my M43 copy of this lens for a few weeks and have concluded that TTArtisans may have a quality control issue. I have been using the Meike 35mm f1.4 (excellent) and the 7Artisans 55mm f1.4 mk 1 (pretty decent) and fully expected that the TTArtisans 17mm f1.4 would offer a similar performance. My copy isn't sharp towards the edges (at any aperture) and the centre sharpness isn't anything special. My lens has a coolish cast as well. When I first received the lens it was such a tight fit on my EM5 III that I couldn't engage the lens locking pin. It's just about ok now but it brings me back to my comments on QC. I may (along with a KZbin reviewer ) have just been unlucky and have a "Friday afternoon" lens. Looking at the very extensive and high end advertising on Amazon, I am rather disappointed by the quality of my copy.

Really positive review. For a M4/3 camera this is filling a gap, that hasn't been covered by affordable lenses. I have a kit lens for "wide" shots, but the aperture is of course a different world (f3.5-f5.6 on kit lens). Contemplating about the 10 mm f2 for proper wide lens....

From all the reviews I have seen, this one by far has the best photos in it. Well done! I was considering the 18mm f2 for my Fuji but at USD600 for a new but 11 year old lens seems a little bit high. This might be the one to buy.

The best thing with such wide lenses is the hyperfocal distance. You can focus them to ~1.2m or 4 feet, and at f/8 everything will be in focus up to infinity. Or for f/4, you can focus to about 3m or 10 feet, but you will lose focus on the first ~1.5m or 5 feet in front of you. You don' t even need auto focus.
@johnbradshaw59002 жыл бұрын
Wonderful review of a wonderful lens! These really are ridiculously good value, and remind us (or teach younger enthusiasts) just how nice it is to use a well made manual focus lens. I don't want to abandon AF as the reality is AF is a much better means for focusing most of the time, but in the right mood it is great to just enjoy the feel of a precision mechanical instrument. It's why I still think there's a place for a nice 35mm mechanical camera like an FM2 with a couple of nice prime lenses in any photographers tool bag.

These Chinese manufacturers are certainly on the ball with their mirrorless lens offerings, Nigel.Their QC is getting to be pretty good too, and I'm sure that they realise that there's an almost untapped market for affordable manual prime lenses. I recently bought the Pergear 25mm f1.8 and find it a stunning lens for the money (I paid around £75 for it) and it produces images that are the equal of lenses many times the cost. Couple it to a Fuji mirrorless, play around with film recipies and you have the basis of a system that wouldn't disgrace a professional. I also have a Sigma 10-20 Wide Angle Zoom in Nikon fitting that I used on my earlier Nikon bodies but would love the Chinese manufacturers to produce a good prime 10mm lens, something that isn't a toy or a novelty, not a fisheye, just superwide. I'm sure that they'll get around to it at some point. Great video, love the format, keep them coming.
@zenography79233 жыл бұрын
I was very impressed with this one - and you're right, the chinese manufacturers are filling a gap that other manufacturers don't want to address - I think to maintain sales of their rather more expensive auto everything lenses, which for them makes sense I guess. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Good review, am thinking of buying one , you point out that the front element protrudes , would you say its safe to use a skylite or UV filter on the front to act as a "protector" that wont touch said front element? its not actually a daft question because in the past i have seen this on my vintage lenses, an example is my Meyer Gorlitz 29mm f2.8 in zebra , it can only take filters with certain qualities ie , substantial depth of filter ring and thin glass. Or would you advocate say , a step up ring ?

It depends on what you want to shoot. If you're shooting drama or comedy then yes, this would be a great lens. If you want to shoot more run and gun type stuff, weddings maybe or youtube, you may encounter situations where you need reliable autofocus, although if you stop this lens down a bit, its depth of field becomes very large, so you might get away with it that way.

The body design is from Voigtlander 50mm f3.5 (Heliar) but I haven't figured out what lens design it has. I have not seen any vintage lenses with 9 elements in 8 groups. Also it would be interesting to check out TTartisan 50mm f1.2 and 35mm f1.4 that resembles the Sonnar design.

Hi, I currently have a Pen-F and Sigma 30mm 1,4 and am very happy but unfortunately too big. I am interested in a bright compact lens mainly for street photography and I am undecided between the two TTartisan lenses 23mm 1,4 (plus compactness) and the 17mm (plus focal but less compact) what do you recommend? I would have doubts about their sharpness, to be picky, the potential that the two lenses have in post-production both with open and closed aperture.
@zenography79232 жыл бұрын
I haven't used the 23mm so can't comment, however I found the 17mm to be very nice indeed, sharp from wide open with nice optical performance, and a very nice feel to images. On your Pen F, the 23mm would give an equivalent (35mm) focal length of 46mm, the 17 an equivalent of 34mm, so they're quite different in this respect. I hope that helps!
@sclogse13 жыл бұрын

You'll need a lens with a 'cat photo' capability - they're quite rare but I can recommend the Carl Zeiss Jena Catcolar (similar to the Pancolar but with cat related coatings) or the Helios 44c - where c stands for cat, of course. Sorry, I'll be sensible now. You'll need a lens that can get quite close (the CZJ Pancolar focusses down to 30cm), and I wouldn't go wider than 35mm to avoid distortion, so the CZJ Flektogon 35 might be good too, as it goes down to 20cm. Another 50mm you might try is the Olympus OM Zuiko 50mm 1.8, a beautiful optic that's pretty cheap too!

I'm not sure you're right about that - I think the images here speak for themselves! I found this a very nice little lens - one of the nicest lenses for mirrorless I've used, in fact! Thanks for looking in.

Great video, thanks. I would like to mention that when giving the FF EQUIVALENT focal length, it might be a good idea to give the f-stop FF equivalent as well. On MFT it is f1.4 x 2 = f2.8. Canon APS-C = f1.4 x 1.6 = f2.24. etc etc.....

Good idea - thanks for the tip!

no it doesn't work like this
@davegibson24783 жыл бұрын
@@wongvincent4735 F-stops are ratio's, therefore whilst the lens in question is an f/1.4 fully opened it's EQUIVALENCE on a FF 35mm camera has to be different as the sensor size is different. IF this lens was also made for FF (which it isn't) it would still be an f/1.4 lens on FF, BUT it would give a different type of image, i.e. more bokeh, shallower depth of field etc.
@eagleeyephoto87153 жыл бұрын
It is bad idea ,since aperture itself can't be multiple with crop factor.It is even not relevant at all if you shot only apsc .As we all know aperture determine exposure and partly D.O.F, so to put crop factor there while you have totally different exposure and using apsc is kind of cheating to your self.in other words no body care what should it be on sensor B or C when you using sensor A.
@eagleeyephoto87153 жыл бұрын
@@davegibson2478 I think you are wrong , put the apsc mount lens on your FF sensor and take a good look when taking photo's, especially w.r.t exposure. D.O.F will be also the same as with FF lens if you don't backup and reframe image which will off course lead to a change of distance to your subject and thus different D.O.F. People are obsessed with shallow D.O.F now days in such a way that they do not look anything else. I shoot X and GFX nount so to compare something to FF has no any sense to me or someone who never shot 35mm film or digital. Lens is 17mm f1.4 (although these cheap offers are usually f1.8) and lens has no clue what size of a sensor is behind rear element.

So, you got into advertising China-made lenses with affiliate links... That's sad, man. And you didn't normalize audio, either. You'll get more people to subscribe once you get your audio louder, believe me. :)
