Minor correction, this lens does not weight ~2.5 lbs. I think Chris meant to say it weighs about 1.5lbs, especially since he got the metric measurement correct (748 grams).

I wasn't expecting that great performance. I do a lot of macro photography and use a Sigma 105mm DG DN macro but I have been wanting a 2x macro lens for taking photos of objects such as plant seeds in a studio setup. I don't have the budget for the Laowa 2x macro lenses, so this might be a good lens for that, especially how sharp it is for the price.

Had this lens with the T/S module, the focus throw is unfeasibly short in actual use. Stay away, get the Laowa instead - that's what I did.

even at macro distances? and what's your experience if let's say focusing by physically moving back and forth with tilt-shift at f/8? is it worth it with focus depth shifting, i.e. doing macro without stacking potentially?

I own this lens and the Nikon 105mm 2.8 VR S and they're within a few percent of each other for sharpness in the center. So if your purely after that and don't want to spend a lot just get the TT Artisan. Contrast and color are better on the Nikon plus autofocus, focus stacking etc that you get with that lens. The TT has 2:1 which is nice.

Considering marcos are usually f/5.6 and above to get any kind of depth of field (even then you’re focus stacking), is the f/2.8 useful for macro? Are there any compact macro options starting at say f/5.6 or even f/8? I would love a tiny macro to keep in the bag :)

Hey Chris! I'de love to know how this compares to the very highly regarded laowa 100mm 2X macro which you have also reviewed quite favorably in the past!

I own the Laowa 100mm, from what I can see the Laowa is the better lens overall. However the Laowa is twice the price of this TTArtisan and if I were in the market for an adorable macro I would save the money. The TTArtisan is 90% of the Laowa for half the price, a no brainer if you ask mw
@edmundsdemonds83093 ай бұрын
@@TDDPhoto Yeah honestly given how well the TT did, I'm not sure if there is any practical difference at all! Its why I'd love to see a more direct comparison from someone who's used both.

Chris, It either weighs approx 700g (1.5-6 lbs), or 2.5 lbs (1,180g)…. It’s not very clear in the video as you made it sound like 700g equates directly to 2.5lbs which is incorrect. Does the weight significantly differ between mounts (Sony : 700g, while GFX : 1,180g), because what you said in your video is somewhat confusing?

How does this compare to the Venus Optics Laowa 65mm f2.8? I have a Fuji XT-5 and am looking to buy my first macro lens. Very tempted by either of these affordable options that both offer 2:1 magnification.

I wonder why these budget lenses often have flaring problems. One would think it is the easier part of optical design to correct for, but I'm no expert.

I suspect it has to do with the cost of the best coatings just being too high at a low price point.

Really don't understand why they make the focus throw so short on these macro lenses. That's basically this lens's only true downside. That and perhaps the lack of a hood.

Impressive quality. I think this beats my Meike for sure. But at the same time, for my work the Meike has been a good enough performer. The focus through beyond a meter is way worse on that lens though 😂

Nice review as usual. However I'm a bit tired of labeling Chinese lenses as 'low budget' lenses 5 or 6 times during the review. This designation suggests that thses lenses are in a lower league than their Japanese or German lenses whis is not really true. We are all aware of the price tag so needless to repeat it so often. And thanks for all theses reviews.

If used as a 2x macro lens, the lack of a hood is irrelevant, if you had one it would hit the subject. The lack of any auto features, such as focus, exposure and EXIF data recording is standard for these offerings and, if we haven't already tried to use one in the field, fairly deal breaking. Stick with a 1x autofocus and switch to manual if necessary to fine tune. 2X macro manual is a world of pain out in the woods, I know from experience. 🥺🥺

I am a novice and like to keep it as easy & simple as possible. For a Sony a6000 shooting macro, handheld, outdoors with live insects, most of which can fly and flowers moving in the wind. Should I go with your recommendation of a 1:1 AF Lens vs 2:1 MF? Thanks.

@@marcodeoliveira9933 The depth of field of focus in tiny. Move your body rather than trying to adjust the focus on the lens. It would feel very front heavy on your Sony body. A flash would help, but is going to add bulk....For my photography I have realised that close but not very very close is more preferable. But that is only me, your milage may vary as the saying goes. Good luck, but don't get too frustrated, life is too short.
