Any chance of you offering a longer lens hood to reduce the awful flare issues with this lens? The supplied one barely does anything? I’m struggling to find a 77mm screw on lens hood that is long enough to combat this problem. Definitely a design flaw, any benefit you Gained by allowing it to reverse and mount on the front of the lens for storage is lost in the fact that it’s too short to properly shield the front element from Stray light.

Congrats to both the new upcoming child in your family (or if it already happened, fantastic!), and this new lens review! How would you say this compares to the Sony 90mm f/2.8 G macro, in terms of portraiture? I’ve converted to Sony a fortnight ago (2 A7RIV bodies), but I’m hesitant on getting into vintage style/manual only lenses nowadays. But with a price this good, doesn’t hurt to try! Edit: Listening to the review again, and a another article, *my* opinion would be this lens would be great for sunny days, or creative projects.

The Sony is an amazing lens for portraits, and the convenience of autofocus and the superior sharpness is worth it.

I think the general presentation of this type of lens is that they have slightly softer presentation, they are generally sharp enough in the centre but soft in the corners compare to modern auto focus lens. But how the out of focus area in your portrait bland into the shot is quite different with this type of lens, I would describe the lenses like Sony and Sigma E mount have that neutral look but these vintage lenses have that pop and a natural looking skin tones. If you want to adapt the lenses you can actually use techart pro adaptor that can turn most of these lenses into auto focus lens and even eye auto focus with techart pro adapter. I tried 50mm F0.95 M mount which work well with Sony both with dumb adapter and techart pro. But if you are just starting to play with adapted lenses I would look at even cheaper vintage lenses like Nikkor 105mm F2.5 or the 58mm F1.4 Voigtlander.

That looks like a nice lens. I have the 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 full frame Leica M-mount. I use it on my Sony A7ii with the Fotodiox Pronto II adapter and it gives me autofocus. If you want autofocus for this TTArtisan's 90mm, put it on the Pronto II adapter.

Got a TTartisan 1.4/50 ASPH for E-mount and it's phenomenally good. Lenses from TTartisan, 7Artisan, Mr. Ding, etc, will just get better, especially with AI based lens design and manufacture. The Chinese manufacturers biggest challenge seems to be coatings.

Regarding flares, the lens hood should really be three times the actual length of the one supplied in order to be truly effective.
@sharifsalem
@sharifsalem 2 жыл бұрын
I bough this lens, the flaring is awful and just destroys contrast in most applications. You are correct, I tried to buy a 3rd party screw on 77mm lens hood that claimed to be telephoto but is barely longer than my canon 50mm f1.2 hood. I’m trying to see if I can stack an 82mm threaded lens hood on too of the 77mm one I already purchased to see if this solves the problem. Otherwise almost unusable for most applications.
@williamcurwen7428
@williamcurwen7428 2 жыл бұрын
@@sharifsalem it’s a common problem. Most lens hoods are way too small to do their job properly. I use stacking rings and a really large telephoto style lens hood for my Russian 58 and 85mm low contrast non multi-coated lenses. That’s around 14cm deep with an 82mm UV filter. The stacking rings are coated with Black 3.0. Sounds extreme but it really works when shooting into the light for extra spatial depth at full aperture. Admittedly, it looks ridiculous …..

You know when buying a lens of this specs and this cheap that there must be a catch and in this case after my short experience with this lens (via an LM to E Mount adapter) the catch is plenty. Daylight shooting from f2-2.8 down is OK but not great but if you use it to shoot night scenes where bright light sources are in the frame such as street, building or car scenes, coma flare is very noticeable, not to mention ugly. Normal flares don't look nice either. Also at the max aperture or about a stop down to f1.4 edge sharpness is very poor while the center is quite soft and in-focus subjects have very noticeable halos. Besides, the lens is very heavy and if you use it only to shoot at moderate apertures then it's no point getting this lens as there are plenty other better, cheaper options in the market to choose from.

Correct on all fronts. I was taken in by Matthieu Stern’s review of it and pulled the trigger. Happy I only paid $425 for it from Pergear. Once I source a lens hood for it that will actually work to reduce flare and contrast destruction I’ll come back to using it but I may either sell or use as a paperweight until such time.

This TT Artisan cannot be compared to a Noctilux in terms of image quality, not even by far. I use this TT Artisan it is faboulous for portrait and a bokeh monster, but at infinity and near limit focus it is mediocre even in the center at all apertures. A Noctilux is superb in all possible conditions and distances. Nonetheless I make unique portraits with this TT-Artisan, that's why I bought it, so I am satisfied

In your conclusion you make me feel you miss the point of this kind of lens. You don't buy them to be perfect, but for what their imperfection adds to the look, the feel in the image. A perfectly sharp lens is good for product photos but you will never find anyone who enjoys having every detail of the skin appears in the photo, sharpness from corner to corner only interests the photographer, most people don't care about it ... In other words, clinical perfection digital photo is not what people ( who don't do photography) are attracted by.
@sharifsalem

Cheap ultra wide aperture lenses are not a challenge for a manufacturer to make. The challenge is making them good. This has so many flaws, from the screw on lens cap to the to way too short lens hood that when in use makes the lens cap impossible to use, the very soft images, the chromatic aberration, cats eye bokeh that contrary to Arthur’s claim were “only in the corner” we could see in that picture he showed us the cats eye bokeh was everywhere there was bokeh. Sure, ultra wide aperture lenses are great for artistic shooting but nailing focus is a chore, contrast is destroyed by flaring and while the depth of field is razor thin the actual light transmission is closer to that of an f1.5 or narrower aperture lens. Rant over.
@nicolasletellier6162
@nicolasletellier6162 2 жыл бұрын
@@sharifsalem That is a serious case of knowing your tools. Lens hood too short, and so ? the lens flair and so? know how to avoid flair or how to use them. the soft image is not the lens, that you who can't focus correctly, manual focus requires practice. Depth of field thin? seriously never do macro photos if you think it's thin on this lens lol. For the bokeh you are both right, if you abuse the bokeh it becomes a cat's eyes, but if you place yourself and your subject correctly no problem. For the loss of contrast yes that is true, but again is about knowing your tools and also easily avoidable and fixable. Yes, this lens is not perfect, that is the point! I sold my Sigma 85mm 1.4 art and use the TTartisant instead. And I have no regret. That is a matter of taste between an ultra-sharp clinical perfect lens and a lens with default. For me perfection is not a quality, it's boring.

@@nicolasletellier6162 this lens exhibits extreme flaring and contrast destruction under almost any lighting condition at wide aperture. I’ve been manual focusing using a variety lenses and focus aides for years now, and own several macro capable lenses. This is absolutely the worst lens i have ever used from a standpoint of inability to work with any light source even close to being in shot, including soft afternoon light in my living room lit only by natural light from a sun that has long since passed over my building.

@@sharifsalem I'm sorry, let alone my own experience with this lens, there is a dozen video that contradicts you. My point is if you find the lens soft is only because you miss focus, if you have flare and lose contrast that is only because you use it in a bad way, and the contrast loss is not even half as bad as you try to say. Is there a better lens ( technically) yes of course. But again when you know your tools that is not a problem and you can get interesting and good results with a lens like that.

@@nicolasletellier6162 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 there are reasons that for decades that lens makers have used coatings and used lens formulas to defeat all these issues I’ve mentioned. Sure, you can can get great photos out of mediocre equipment, doesn’t mean it’s not mediocre equipment. You’re confusing large aperture for good design, and this $800 lens has serious design flaws whatever way to try and spin it. My copy of this lens is objectively soft even when in focus at wide apertures.
