The rule against hiding the ball is like the traveling rule in the NBA. It says it’s illegal but it is not enforced over 99% of the time. It’s unfortunate that sports allow rules to be broken just so players can “be better” and the game can reach “new heights.” In reality, past players could have been just as accomplished had they been allowed to break the rules too.

Seems like a lot of people don't know what a legal serve is. The ball is supposed to be visible throughout the entire serve, not just the point of contact. From the ITTF handbook: 2.6.4 From the start of service until it is struck, the ball shall be above the level of the playing surface and behind the server's end line, and it shall not be hidden from the receiver by the server or his or her doubles partner or by anything they wear or carry.

Arkadi Danielyan The ball is supposed to lay on your open flat hand before the throw. If you are not disabled, your thumb is not above your palm, but in front of it. So its not even possible to cover up the ball with your thumb, if you follow the rules. Hint: the ball isnt able to pass through your palm, which is necessary to be hidden behind the thumb.
@maxmustermann3876
@maxmustermann3876 5 жыл бұрын
Arkadi Danielyan I have never said "below", but " in front", which means the same height. And when your hand is totally relaxed and facing upwards, you are right. But most of the non-disabled people are capable of forming a flat surface with their hand. Probably you are playing and such a low level that nobody cares about that stuff. If you are interested to learn a correct service I have a tip for you. Put your palm at the wall, like you were pushing it away. abracadabra your thumb is not above your palm anymore (or is it stuck inside of the wall now?)

When the direction of the spin is that much a mystery to other professional players, it's a pretty good sign he is in fact obscuring the ball at the moment of contact, as a lot of others here are pointing out. Which seems pretty clear in the slo-mo replay at 0:57.

Well, from table perspective, the camera is at an angle app. 30° to the right. JSY is on the backhand position, thus being app. 20° to the left of MY. So in the end JSY looks at MY at an app. 50° other angle than the camera...but hey, it's pretty clear! ;)

Yeah. He hides the ball with his head. Simple solution. Use that DHS plastic white & yellow two-toned ball they've used in the China super league and do away with hiding rules that everybody tries to push to the limit. If you want to toss the ball behind your arm? Go ahead. It was that way for years and TT was fine back in the day. With the two tone going on, players could better see the spin to help make up for the fact that everybody would be hiding their contact point. Would also be nice on TV slow-mo replays letting the audience better see the spin they're getting on serves.

I think we should not be much harsh on player, a lot has been changed and accepted like as per ITTF rules, the ball must be tossed vertically straight up during the service but now most of the time it moves back in the air towards the player. Similarly, keeping in view the ball visibility rule, the ball must not be picked/hit below the table height but most of the time players do it, specially for extra spin.

This is the kinda serve that Adam Bobrow has a video on KZbin about. High toss, contact with a very shallow angle bat creating top spin but a feint follow through, indicating back spin. Referees count these serves as legal even if the ball is hidden, because it is hidden by the body (shoulder or head) and usually referees dont count this as illegal. Lebesson does the same thing : he serves and hides the ball, behind his shoulder / head when he serves short with backspin + the referee may have thought that at a face-to-face angle the ball could be seen by joo sae-hyuk. In fact there's many thing that are barely legal that aren't counted by referees. For example, the ball has to be launched straight upwards because a throw taht goes a bit sideway could mess with the read of the spin. But you'll see that a lot of players actually launch the ball slightly towards them, so it doesnt really go upwards, but referees let that slide.

@@Teopong The rule writes that between the toss and contact of the ball with the racket the ball must always be visible for the opponent and that referees have a clear view. The ball was evidentially behind his head leaving a short time of non-viability for the opponent. Sadly, this rule is hardly enforced. There are MANY rules, especially when talking about serves, that are not enforced.

Toss the ball clearly not vertically and towards your body. Then use that illegal toss make the contact point either difficult and sometimes impossible to see. Yeah that will always be hard to return it's also very clearly against the rules as written. Still enforcement of the toss is so relaxed these days as to be effectively none existent and if everyone else is doing it...

Everyone commenting saying his serve is illegal is conveniently forgetting that even when you see a close up of the contact, the fact that backspin results from that hit defies the laws of physics.
