Phillip McCallen described as an occasional winner at the TT with 11 wins in total and 4 in a week, is a massive understatement. He never seems to get his dues given what he achieved in road racing.

I am 62 years old, I and my family have been " speed freaks" all our lives, I am a 3rd generation, I have 2 sons that are carrying on it seems, we have had a successful business that has allowed us to build and go places from the Salt flats to nitro funny cars, we do retro racing. This past year we finally went to the isle of man. No, none of us race bikes but we had to go, for one it's beautiful, but the men, the speed, the skill level, the machines are absolutely on a level like no other competition, there is nothing absolutely nothing that compares to it, it doesn't matter if your not a great big fan of motorcycles, if your a fan of speed, skill and just flat out bravery then god knows you must agree, I know I am commenting on Peter's run bit all these riders are ridiculously good, I have been to every major automotive event in the world, from indy, Daytona, formula 1, nhra finals, dirt track finals, monster jam finals, world super bike finals, and NOTHING COMPARES TO THE ISLE OF MAN. PUT IT ON YOUR BUCKET LIST

I once saw a Marshall at the TT, an old guy, asked why he gave up 2 weeks of his life, at his age to do it, his reply, which always brings a tear to my eye, was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. He said; "To watch some of the bravest men in the world, try to achieve greatness." ❤

@@karlosh9286 John isn't a nutter though. He seems calm and does a good job, he doesn't just go sod it, he rides to what he feels he can ride too, hence why hes lasted so long when others have been injured or worse, when he was badly injured it was because the bike spat him off, like the same bike did to guy martin when he had to jump off it at 140 mph in not the most forgiving part of the course. I think Michael Dunlop used to be a nutter but hes matured a lot since 2016 ish and doesn't seem to go too far anymore. which is a good thing for health and results. To finish first you must first finish, as they say.

@@theant9821 I guess to me any biker who goes full bore around the Isle of Man course has to be a bit mad. I find the IoM TT compulsive viewing, mainly because I guess it's something I could never do. They certainly have a different "risk profile" to me. I'd love to do a lap of the IoM, but my laptime would probably be more like 60 minutes instead of 17 ish mins ! Admittedly some bikers are madder than others. To name a pair, yes, Carl Fogarty does seem a bit mad, along with Guy Martin. John McG has managed to survive, and also win a real lot of races. So he must be doing something right. He's still pretty quick as a plus 50 year old. To my knowledge John McG's worst crash was at the NW200 a few years ago, and that was the bikes fault, not his. I do agree Michael Dunlop is a bit more measured these days. He's still very quick.

Absolutely tear jerking!... waves of Nostalgia are building within.. I was there at the IOM TT that year... Grown men were in tears seeing that Norton had finallyWon a TT again . Both riders at the very top of there game. Can’t believe in sheer ingratitude of the Norton Executive Bosses when the team returned home victorious... moaning about the cleanliness in the pits... FFS!!! they should’ve been kissin’ the asses of the guys that made that win possible... Unbelievable... We remember you Whizzy Hizzy!.... I bet you pulled a wheelie through the pearly gates. Fantastic racing... & an Epic event. Breathtaking...

Barry Sheene is reported to have described Foggy as having an incurable eye disease, as in "If I'd been given a factory NSR ride I could have won the 500 GP championship, no question, I would have been the champion!"
@ianmacfarlane1241
@ianmacfarlane1241 2 жыл бұрын
@@smokerjim Great quote, and one that I've never heard before. Accurate too - like many great sportspeople*, Foggy's supreme confidence borders on arrogance, and not without good reason, as he was an incredibly talented rider. Was he right though? Difficult to say, but I'd suggest no. Honda, and for that matter, Cagiva, clearly didn't think that he could mount a serious championship challenge either, or he'd have been given the opportunity** - Honda are in the business of winning championships, (and selling all manner of vehicles), and if they thought Foggy could bring a championship home, he'd surely have been given an NSR - a British champion would have been hugely significant during the 1990s, given the size of the UK sportsbike market at the time. As an outsider, with no connection to motorbike racing, it looked like Honda, and Cagiva/Ducati saw Carl Fogarty as a top level production racer, but not a Grand Prix racer, aside from half a dozen wildcard rides. *Barry Sheene was hardly lacking in confidence himself. **Obviously there were, (and still are) other considerations in racing, though I couldn't give any insight into the internal politics of the paddock - there could always be other reasons he never got a GP ride.

I happened to have a couple of weeks holiday coming up at work and went on a whim. It was without doubt the most intense and incredible sporting event that I have ever witnessed. The atmosphere in the crowd during the Senior race was electric. I still occasionally talk about it to friends, to this day, and it's only with the benefit of hindsight that I have come to understand what it was that I watched that day. I'd love to go back. Wow I would love to see a commentary version like this of every year of the TT. It’s so great hearing the backstory while watching bits of the race and hearing all of the details of what was good and what was bad. Was the engine going to make it?? ETC Is there any more episodes like this one??

@karlosh9286
@karlosh9286 3 жыл бұрын
@@stephentrout7879 It did have a bit of an appetite for I think "Mobil 1" oil. Not quite as bad as its petrol drinking habit. What always "got me" , was the "afterburner" on the OEM exhaust manifold. It wasn't there to make it go faster, in fact it restricted performance. The "afterburrner" was just putting in some extra air into the exhaust gases to help burn off the fuel that had gone straight through the combustion chamber. i.e. it helped with emissions, and made the OEM exhaust pipe one of the dearest on any car at the time. (about £1500 ish) Janspeed offered an exhaust, that just threw away the after burner, and let the unburnt petrol out. Half the price (£750 ish ) of the official Mazda one , and it got a performance increase , IIRC of about 20 to 30 BHP. I never fitted the janspeed one, I got rid of the car before the exhaust fell apart !

I've always been a huge Foggy fan but he sounds a bit arrogant here. He said Joey was no longer a threat but Joey won another 15 TT races after Foggy won his last of three
@TheChickenLine
@TheChickenLine 3 жыл бұрын
He said Joey was no threat to him, he’s right! Foggy was a far better rider than Joey Dunlop, as he proved by becoming multiple World Superbike Champion. Joey Dunlop was a prolific TT winner, but he was never the greatest TT Rider, those accolades belong to Hailwood, Agostini, Geoff Duke…and yes, Carl Fogarty, all World Champions!
@BrianBell4073

@@TheChickenLineYou see that statue? It ain't Foggy. Johnny Rea would have destroyed Foggy on a short circuit. Joey destroyed him on road races. The three most successful track guys in the past 30 years had a look at the TT and basically went 'fuck that' (Doohan, Rossi and Rea....all loved their run off areas)
@TheChickenLine
@TheChickenLine 3 жыл бұрын
@@BrianBell4073 You fail to understand. I respect Joey for his achievements, but he was unable to take TT wins when the top short circuit riders raced…Joey was a Gladiator on the road circuit, but, never one of the greatest riders in history, I’m sorry to burst your bubble…even Ian Hutchinson could never progress further than Supersport, Peter Hickman further than BSB…I’ve been going to the TT since the Hailwood days, many of my friends where successful TT riders and I can assure you that Joey was always there, like John McGuiness…but even they would never put their career achievements above the likes of Mike Hailwood, Ago, Foggy…racing isn’t measured by the length of a run off but courage is, or to some people ‘stupidity’, and that’s their choice!
@TheChickenLine
@TheChickenLine 3 жыл бұрын
Further, it took 3yrs to know the course, it probably takes 4-5 now because of the speeds. Joey may have beaten Foggy and others on their TT debut, but once these riders got to grips with the circuit they not only beat Joey but they also broke the lap records, something that Joey never done, he never held a lap record and therefore, Never “Smashed” his opponents! Again, I take no pleasure in bursting your bubble…
