I personally think that getting a tattoo that represents an aspect of myself is great because I look at my tattoos like a roadmap of myself. Even if down the line that thing isn't important to me, it was still important enough at some point in my life and that will never change. I guess it all depends on how you view tattoos. A roadmap of different points in your life, adornment on your skin, or any other way you'd like to think of it. SO I guess just understanding why you're getting tattooed would be a good place to start.

+Lexi Laverdiere I agree with that. It gives so much more meaning to a tattoo to have a story to it. I'm only 21 with two tattoos, but it took lots of time and thought to really want those tattoos. I got tattoo's that represent me and my life and I like it when people ask about my tattoos. I like telling them about my story and why I got it and what I got it for. So really I also agree that it's really how you look at tattoos. you can get them as something pretty to have on your body, or it can be a life story, and something it represents. I feel that you regret your tattoo's less if you have something that represented a big change or impact in your life. My first tattoo is my Zodiac sign (libra) and to me that represents my strive for perfection and balance, wanting to keep peace and make everyone happy. My second tattoo is a water color of a Semi colon in the middle of a heart beat with three little dots after it, representing my struggles with depression and how I choose to live on instead of giving up, and to also honor the teens that had killed themselves in my hometown (and it's been bad with that). Not only are they pretty, but they are something I thought long and hard on and have something to represent me.
@cfarinaaz8 жыл бұрын
+Lexi Laverdiere I agree completely. Getting a tattoo for its beauty is a great reason, but I think that personal meaning is a great reason, too. It can be a roadmap, and/or an expression of some intrinsic part of yourself that's always been there and will never go away, even if its meaning and significance may change over time. All my tattoos have to do with something about myself, and even the ones that maybe have less immediate meaning now still have their story and represent me and my life in some way. Even the little butterfly I got on a Friday the 13th, simple and impulsive as it was, has a story behind it that I appreciate. No regrets about any of them. You just have to really understand, as you said, why you're getting tattooed and what you value in tattoos.

Kathy i got tattooed at 16 and i did my research and designed it myself and worked with a great artist and it's a sick tattoo that i love to this day and people are constantly complimenting me on it sooo idk depends on the person man i was definitely way too mature for my age at 16. I had a few other classmates who got tattooed around the same age and got shitty tattoos, and even back then i knew they were shitty. I think if you have an understanding of art and you do your research you can get a tattoo at 16 and not regret it :-)

I'm 15 and I've had a particular tattoo in mind since I was 11: roses. My mother passed away when I was ten and the flower she loved the most was the rose. It's come to embody who she is to me, and something I know I need to get someday. It's beautiful. And it's not about me either - It's a reminder that she's constantly there in everything that is lovely in this world

I was actually in the exact situation as you, my mom passed away & I wanted rose tattoos for her as well. I'm so happy I didn't get them. I did end up getting a flower for her, she had a poppy flower tattoo on her ankle for someone she loved named poppy who passed away (who I was named after) & so I got a different style poppy flower tattoo on my ankle for her, not matching, & on a different part of my ankle. I'm not saying you'll regret them, I'm just telling my story 😌 good luck

I completely agree on the "get something that you think is beautiful" idea. I get asked if my tattoos have meaning all the time, and the truth is that most of them really don't, I just loved the artist and their design. So many people think that all tattoos have to be deep and meaningful, but really I think it's better when they aren't, because you're less likely to regret them later. I'm so glad that you share this opinion, and I really enjoyed this video!

I kinda disagree about getting a tattoo that represents you (depending on what it is). Like I have a scissor tattoo because I'm studying fashion design, but also creating/making has always been an important part of my life. Even if I don't become a fashion designer or don't ever touch my sewing machine again, it still represents a part of me that existed, and I like having that reminder that it will always be a part of me. But I do think opinions/political tattoos (like vegan) are a little bit touchier because those things are a bit more fleeting/temporary.
@aon02b8 жыл бұрын
to me, I think the most safe way to not regret a tattoo is exactly the opposite of her first tip. Instead of just getting something you think is pretty, get something that means something to you. Because if you don't like the picture anymore in a couple of years you'll see what the tattoo means when you look at it and not just the picture. But I guess it's pretty individual :O
@sweaterlucknexttime8 жыл бұрын
But people change too and something that means something to you now may be something you regret in the future. Just my opinion, but I'm not sentimental so maybe that's just me.

@2712078 жыл бұрын
I agree, I thought that was a weird tip for a first tattoo. I think tattoos that are "just pretty" are the type you only get once you have more of them. People do change and for that same reason you might 'grow out of' liking a certain image too and that's not good if it's your first and potentially only tattoo. At least when a tattoo has personal meaning, even when that meaning no longer applies, it still represents a period in your life and, in fact, it celebrates the changes you've gone through. As long as it has a deep personal meaning (not "I really love this band so I'm getting their logo!"), it makes more sense to have it on your body as a first tattoo.

Annika Oehlenschlæger I got my first tattoo and I did choose an image based on what I thought was beautiful. it's a lotus flower and yes I am Buddhist, but I also just like the look of the tattoo and how it fits my body, the spot on line work the artist did and the simplicity of the design. Even if I decided not to be Buddhist anymore I can still confidently say that it is a very well done tattoo and I would never think that it looks unappealing on my body to the point where I would want to remove it. It is a very solid, well done tattoo. meaning of it aside, I'm happy to wear it on my body even without the Buddhist connotations. I think that's what she meant in the video by getting something that looks pretty. I would much rather have a tattoo with no meaning whatsoever to me personally, but looks attractive vs a shoddy, poorly done tattoo that has all sorts of hidden symbolisms that might only be relative to a very brief part of my life. a lot of the tattoos that people have removed are so-called "meaningful" tattoos that were done in a very visually unappealing way. after the novelty of having the personal symbolism wears off, you realize that you're left with a very ugly piece of artwork on your body that you no longer relate to

Um okay so first of all...I love your laugh after reminding ppl what this series is called. I love that you mentioned getting a beautiful tattoo as opposed to a "personal" tattoo. Ppl alllllways mention getting a tattoo that ✨means something to you but like you said people change literally all the time and it's okay!!!!! All of my personal tattoos are fucking stupid and I only got like 3 out of 10 that I was seriously thinking about....thank god I stopped. Some things are cool especially if it's a classic design but means something to you but like...try your best to hold off on getting a Harry Potter quote or MCR lyrics because they mean a lot to you. Trust me like I'm 23 and still emo but I thank the good lord every day that I didn't get the MCR tattoo that I wanted so bad lmfao.
@taylorb3228 жыл бұрын
I think Kiera Rose mentioned this in a vid before but like try not to stress too much about "regretting something in the future" like the truth is you don't know....no one truly knows how they are going to feel 50+ years from now so either 1) just go for it. If the worst regret you have in life when you're old and ugly is that you have a purple unicorn with a moustache tattooed on you you'll be ok! Regretting a tattoo is not the end all be all worst thing that can happen to you so don't worry too much Or 2) just never get tattooed ever and be sad. That's your only two options so pick one and just go with it weeeeeeee 🎷

Taylor B - "Just go for it" implies being more risky than you otherwise would be.. I'd rather take option 3 where you don't risk as much and don't do the meaning thing, and get something that is more safe and looks really pretty at the same time. far less can go wrong there. The only other option is not to just get no tattoos.. that's a little extreme.. there's a middle option between "NO risk", and "more risk than you otherwise would of been comfortable with". If I assumed too much with your reply, based on the content of the comment you were replying to, then my bad.

I didn't start getting tattooed until I was 23. I had tons of friends who the second we all turned 18 when and got like 10 tattoos, all things that now they don't care about or had done really badly so are fading like crazy. My advice if you are unsure of what you want is to make a list. Write down all your tattoo ideas, on a piece of paper, a note on your phone, whatever. Let some time pass & go back & look at the list, add to it. If a year passes & there is something on that list you still want, then go for it. I do this. I always have a running list & sometimes even after 6 months goes by I look at it & go "why the heck did I want that?" & delete something off of it.

As far asthe first tip, I think you could say the same thing for even your tattoo images. Sometimes even your favorite color changes. I think stressing too much over them is bad, but my good rule of thumb is to wait a significant period of time with the idea. My first tattoo was a Vaporeon from Pokémon. lol I got it when I was seventeen, and I love it still. I plan on getting many more video game tattoos. What I'm saying is this: Telling people that x type is regrettable never works. Instead, give more tools to help people decide. It's a good idea to draw it on yourself and wear it for a few days to see if you actually like seeing it on your body. Going into what kinds *you* don't think people will like is, I think you know, inaccurate.

my words. I only have one tattoo, a family one, but I had a lot of tattoo ideas. My mother gave me the advice to flesh out the tattoo design, and then wait at least 3 months before looking at it again and then deciding "do I still like that?" It has disqualified a lot of silly tattoo ideas and also some that I first thought to symbolize something important but turned out to be simply a mood. Currently I am on another tattoo that is doing well so far in the "judging period". It means a ton to me because it signifies my fight on following my dream, so I hope it'll survive the testing phase.

This video was super helpful to me! I'm 23 and I've been debating getting my first tattoo for about 6 months, but I'm worried about hating it in 10 years. Getting something beautiful rather than something that "defines you" is the best tattoo advice I've heard. I feel like I'm an entirely different person than I was a year ago, and as humans we spend our whole lives changing and growing. I'm a lot less nervous about getting a tattoo since I've realized that what I want is a pretty, neutral sort of design and less of a "THIS IS WHO I AM!" kinda thing.

In general, I think this is all good advice. I'm not sure I necessarily agree with the tattoos just looking pretty and not meaning anything, but apart from that, I wholeheartedly agree with all of this. Especially about the ideas you have when you're young. I'm so glad my parents didn't let me get any tattoos when I was under 18 because all the ideas I had that I really wanted to get were trash.
@2712078 жыл бұрын
I think the very best advise for a first tattoo is: Wait. No matter what age you are, wait. Make a sketch, or a collage of reference/inspiration pictures and put them somewhere you will see them every day (I use the inside of my closet door) and wait a couple of weeks or even months and ask yourself every day: do I still love this image? My favorite tattoo shop has a waiting period of several months and that's perfect. It *forces* me to wait, so that curbs the enthusiasm and gives time to be critical. Waiting prevents you from getting an impulse tattoo and if you do end up getting it, the odds of it being perfect are greater. Even if I still love the idea I had, it always gets tweaked a little as time goes on.

My first tattoo was fantastic. Here's how I did it. 1: I followed my dad's advice of, after having the idea sketched out, waiting a whole year before you get it. If you still absolutely love it a year later when you walk in the shop, you're making the right decision. 2: I waited till I met someone with a bunch of gorgeous tattoos, then met her artist. 3: I got a symbolic drawing, no words, with years of meaning to me. 4: It's been half a year, I am adding to it a few small ideas that I wanted but couldnt draw out properly before random inspirations. Its been many months now, and I still have 2 and a half months before I'm getting said additions, and still love the whole idea now. With these, it will be complete, then I plan to start sketching out my next one :D

you prob already got it by now lol but i think it is a great idea....that is a timeless statement that will always have relevance every damn day of life!! you can always glance down and remind yourself to not panic....lol...hope you like it!

I think something that seems to be beautiful for you right now can be stupid in some years as much as your conception of yourself can change. I go for 1. choose an style and stick to it if you plan to have a decent collection in the future. 2. If you think you will regret it: you will regret it. 3. Once you choose a design, wait 6 to 12 months and see if you still want the same exact idea. 4. Don't base the decision of the tattoo on your budget. One 600$ tattoo > 3 x 200$ tattoos. 5. Don't copy tattoos!!!!! that won't make you regret it, but will make you an a-hole ;)

i got my first tattoo at 19 and it's a symbol of my childhood. it's Rafiki's drawing of Simba. anyone that knew me as a toddler knew how much i love the Lion King. I'm 22 now and i still love this tattoo. my thigh piece that I'm getting next month is Frenchie from Grease because she was someone i idolized as a kid, too. i see a lot of Frenchie in myself. I'm getting a Harry Potter tattoo on tuesday and it's going to have McGonagall's wand in it - Maggie Smith battled breast cancer on set and I lost my grandmother to the same disease. you can get tattoos that identify and symbolize you and your personality.

I totally agree with the age thing...when I was 18 I really wanted this rainbow phoenix tattoo...thought it was sooooo cool...now I actually really hate the idea of tattoos like that for myself. I like clean lines and geometric tattoos (actually I like flowy abstract ones too, but like where they're just one color)...white ink or stars (and there's one exception, I wanna get a hydrangea tattoo in honor of my Grandma) or just other things that are simple, but I'm just sooooo glad that I never got that one back then because I know I wouldn't be happy with it now

I got my first tattoo when I was 20 and I’m so glad that I didn’t get the tattoo idea I got when I was 17

I got my first tattoo yesterday and I understand what you said about getting something that's pretty instead of something that's "you". I almost took this advice but I remembered why I was getting my tattoo. I was in a really bad place for a few years and I'm getting better now, and I'm proud of myself for the first time in a long time. I got a balloon with the string being held down by tape to represent that I'm holding on to life and youth, and I absolutely love it. Maybe I'll hate it in ten years but right now, it's pushing me to keep going. I think it depends on why you're getting it. If someone's getting it just to have a tattoo, I agree with you 100%

I agree completely about getting tattoos that your artist specialises in. I got my first two by an artist that my father was going to at the time, because I was young and naive and completely oblivious to the world of tattoos and tattoo styles. I still like them, but knowing what I know now and after seeing similar tattoos done by much better artists, I would definitely get them done differently if given a do-over. It really pays to do your research and find someone you know will give you exactly what you're after.

Ahh yes that one about the tattoo artist doing no wrong! When I got my first tattoo I looked around for months for an artist I loved and really connected with. Everything he did made me feel excited. Even though 12 months on I don't feel as strongly about the concept of the tattoo anymore, I still think it's a beautiful piece of art.

I'm 15 and have been thinking about getting a tattoo for a year or two now but have decided to wait until I become an adult incase. I want it to commemorate all the betrayal and abuse I have been through so far in life, and your tattoo talks are really helping me out for the future to come. :)

My first tattoo was a small celtic knot I got got done in Scotland on a theater trip at 18. I'm 26, I'll always be of a heavy Irish Catholic descent, and that month in Scotland is still one of the best experiences of my life, not because the years since have been bad, but because it was just that amazing. Totally don't regret it, thankfully.

ps, researched the best shops in Edinburgh before I made the trip, and set up the appointment as soon as I got into town. It was a morning apointment, so it was sober and planned. I still think I made a pretty reasoned decision for 18
@amandaarmstrong59018 жыл бұрын
I always sit on my tattoo "idea" I want for at least a year or so before I get it. I also love my tattoo artist, and his wife and him have a shop together. There is also another artist and he does the portraits. I love how they even tattoo together on the same person if the piece has different styles in it. I'm happy in love with my two tattoos from him and ready for more!

Your advice about finding the perfect artist and focusing on their strengths is SO TRUE. I've found one artist who I literally die (in a good way lol) when I see their lettering tattoos on insta, but I kinda hate all their non-lettering pieces. So that's all I'll ever get from them because I know that's all I'm going to enjoy from them. And that's 1000% ok lol

Dope video! When you mentioned being young, as a 20y/o, I was ready to be DRAGGED - when you mentioned 15y/os, I remembered the tattoo I wanted when I was 15 and... am very glad I did not get now. Obviously still young, so this was very helpful in prepping for my third (my mom makes sure to get on my case about regretting tattoos every time) as I realized I'd gone through the checklist. It's beautiful, the tattoo artist I found specializes in the style, and it doesn't represent some part of me that I just think "well, this is my defining quality, let's do this!" Thanks for all of the tips!!

I got my first tattoo at 16, and it has only just been replaced as my favourite by my 9th tattoo which is a half back piece. I still adore it and it has loads of personal meaning to me as it represents my relationship with my grandad. I agree, many of my ideas then were crap. But many years and tattoos later I still love it :)

HEY COULD PPL GIVE ME ADVICE PLEASE ?? :) I've been in a relationship for 5 years and it's been through the whole of my teenage years. His last name is Fox and so naturally I want to get a fox tattoo. I feel like even if we broke up I'd still like something to represent the person that was my best friend that grew up with me. What are people's thoughts on this? x

I think a good way to think of tattoos you have already gotten and might regret after the fact is just like hey I enjoyed that I one point in my life that really meant a lot to me and to look at it and be reminded of how good that point in time was rather than oh I don't like it anymore and I'm ashamed to have it. thats what I'll probably do anyway if I get one I won't love forever

My first tattoo was (sort of) a matching tattoo with my mom. For her first tattoo, she got a triquetra on her ankle that was blue, and, years later (when I was of age) I got a triquetra as well, but in black and white and on the base of my neck.

I'm 15 and I'm going to get my first tattoo is less than a month for my 16th birthday. I been thinking about this tattoo for a couple years now and I'm so excited for it. But most of my family has tattoos and recommend me the best places for certain tattoo styles and stuff. I did a whole bunch of research on where I'm getting it done and I just can't wait. I really like the idea of my tattoo :))

You're right! I used to dance so I had points (ballerina shoes) tattooed at my back. Then...I had a serious problem with my knee and I stopped. When I was 18 I thought I'll be dancing for ever. Now after all these years I don't think so anymore. I have different passions and hobbies. Maybe that's why I'm in the process of tattoo removal :)

I'm 15 and for my 16th birthday I'm getting a tattoo I had this idea for a year and loved it so much and now I kinda think it is to simple and don't like it very much anymore. so even if you think you like a tattoo a lot and you have liked it for a very long time , your preferences change all the time so be careful about getting a tattoo you won't regret.
